I created this video with the UA-cam Video Editor (ua-cam.com/users/editor)
I love mine, I have a '59 Gen 1 with Pica Techno font, hahaha, yeow that took some getting used too. Mine is a gift from my Mother for my 45th Birthday. I collect typewriters and I use them and maintain them, I write all my first drafts on typewriter, been doing this since the late '80s. Two of my most favorite machines in my collection of 7 prescious machines, sometimes its hard to decide which to take out and work with. The Hermes usually wins but for feel touch inside and out of the body, ease of use and maintenance both these two I'd say are neck and neck Hermes type touch is unlike anything better than butter, and the only one that's right behind this baby, as it has shock absorbers in each key, is of course the 1954 Olympia SM-3 both these machines are awesome. But yes, the Hermes is absolutely in the lead. Fun stuff on these two in my collection, My Hermes has repair bills one from '64 and '70 for the same repair which is a bit alarming a carriage return lever...course when I tell where the bill was charged to, it for me makes sense they most have been rough. NYPD C/O Homicide Division, and this machine just gives off vibes to write a good murder mystery. It has the rare Subsection Key, I was told these were only order by schools of law, lawyer offices, and Police Departments, as the § is needed to write Law subsection and penile codes. The Olympia SM3 I got from Germay, (hey that rhymes) I am its first USA owner it was a floor model for the company and it has the Qwerty western keyboard, it looks like it's never been used, the back plate plaque only holds the name of the Company where all Olympia's of that era were made. The bottom part, the part where it shows the typewriter was made for company or person, is Blank. Ive never seen that. Most you ever see hold the 90 West St New York address for the Continental Trading Group, a company that in the '50s -'70s traded and shipped among other things primarily Tobacco. The company is gone but the building is still there and is an apartment complex. Wonder is some one lives there and has an Olympia SM3 or SG-1 and has their address on it lol. Crazy to think of. Thanks for reading subscribed and be well and safe, thanks for this video, Oh and I can't even imagine how cool it must have been to be an authorized Hermes Dealer. I love the past and man I'd love to hear your record of it. Tha k you again, truly.
I can’t afford a Hermes unless I get lucky and find a cheap one somewhere so I use mid 1950s Remington portables instead, cheap to acquire and easy to fix.
What happens when the chain becomes loose?
Thank you, very clear explanations and tips
Are parts easy to get Dale ? And how to fix paint chips ?
No parts available as these machines have not been made for over 30 years. I have quite a few parts machines that I can use for parts when needed. If you want to touch up paint chips, take a part of the housing to an auto paint store and have them match it. Hope this helps, left me know if you have any other questions about these wonderful machines. All the best, Dale
You were right on time with this video, my friend! How do I buy you a coffee?
Thanks very much, Dale! Great video!
Thank you!
Mr Lahey?
Hi Dale, just found you and subscribed. As a former sales and repairman for Hermes typewriters, you are invaluable to the newer community of people like me. You should do some technical repair series videos exclusive for Hermes and set up a paypal tip bucket. I think you could make some money doing what you obviously have a passion for. Hope to see more from you on your channel! Thanks!

Thanks!it was a big help for me !🥳
my hero :)
Are you using skip tooth chain? For ripping is 30° tooth angle best? What is best length bar overall for 2x10 boards - Thanks for video-
The chain is a cross cut, not skipping chain. A new or professionally sharpened should work fine. Bar length depends on size of log you’re cutting.
Unfortunately, my margin marking tape broke and I would like to release the set margin from it. How is it possible? Thanks. Sorry for my English, it's not my native language.
Keren bos ,salut . .
I have a problem that the tab cancelling buttons ( - and - - -) don't cancel the tabs at all. I have the left and right tabs set ok but not the ones set with the + button.
Thanks for your good review.
Can i please ask why there is no 1 on these?? I got one and thought it was missing the 1 but see they are all missing.. Thanks
I think they were saving space. You can use the lowercase L. I just got mine tonight and am so excited!
Thank you for the video! It helped me so much.
42 key machines had 84 characters, no room for the numeral 1 so lower case L is used and no ! So period then backspace then apostrophe is used. In the 1950s 44 key machines with 88 characters started to appear and they do have the numeral 1 and ! except one of mine has pilcrow and silcrow instead of 1 and !, probably a Lawyer typewriter.
Thank you very much vor your help !!!
Wonderful vid! I love my Hermes 3000 (same model), it has a tactility and physicality that laptops like my MacBook Pro just don't possess for writing. A wonderful tool for just unplugging to get that raw, first pass down, unlocking the subconscious.
Thank you for sharing your experience and tips for the Hermes 3000. Daniel
Great video! I actually picked one up at an estate sale for $12 dollars. I was planning on selling it on eBay. But it’s so much fun and my kids love it. How I wish I grew up in a era with these!!!
Thanks for a great video! I learned many things about my Hermes 3000 I did not know, and from now on I'll be able to reset the margins without consulting the manual. It's so helpful seeing how it works!
Lots of assholes and know it all’s here.
Thanks so much for all this information!! You were such a big help! I can't wait to find myself one of these green machines! -Alex
Thanks for this great video! My 11 year old son just bought one for $26 because he found that he loves typewriters after trying one at my aunt's. It's wonderful to know these functions that we otherwise may have never known.
My mother bought this version in 1963 with the very small typeface, S 7 about 13 cpi. Was wondering how common that was in 1963...she bought it to use for billing purposes for a small business my father ran. She liked the machine a lot and never complained about the small font...it does look a tad to small for my taste.
Nice! I'd love a 13 cpi typewriter! Daniel
Золотая доска получилась.
Where can i get one ?
Great video! Thx, man.
I have a product similar to this one and haven't used it yet. Problem I see is running out of beam to atatch the guide 2x to. Any tricks to being able to use the whole beam to saw into 1x or 2x s?
Not sure what you mean, "running out of beam" if you clarify I will try and answer your question.
@@dalehaddon591 What I mean is the guide 2x4 is attached to the beam you are cutting, thus making it difficult to use the entire log. Unless of coarse you make a jig to hold the guide 2x separate from the log you're sawing. That clarify?
@@vicktdock I rigged mine up on a couple logs that are heavy enough to not move while cutting and just longer than what I'm cutting then I adjust my rail (2×6 guide)with each cut .
Did you guys ever correct the misspelled word on your Lumbermaker's box?
yes, the next batch of labels we had it corrected.... thanks!
i have one of these. great tool but the set screws are backing off and i have lost 2 screws and no idea on where to buy replacements. other than that it is a great tool and you can`t beat the quality on a original Haddon
That's very neat of you...thanks for sharing
Thank you Mr Haddon~
Cadê os BR que serram sem guia e sem judiar da máquina? (Achei que ele iria cortar o peito do pé no início do vídeo)
Well Done
2 by 6 is not a board. These guides are useless for producing boards that are about 1 inch thick. Too many passes.
Go lookup Haddon lumbermaker and you’ll see that Mr. Dale Haddon here, is a member of that family. He may not have invented it, but hes kin to the people that did and Im sure he has many many more miles on this device than the rest of us. Maybe instead of criticizing this man we should all pay attention and ask some questions. Theres no better value than that which comes from experience, and Im here because this man has the experience I need so I dont cut my damn leg off when I start milling all these Hurricane Michael trees. Thank you good sir for taking the time to teach me this for free. I can’t wait to get my hands on this thing.
You can go out and get a 4K mill, but this is what it is.

You need a sharp chisel tooth chain
mbsroh lah
Is this your product: Haddon lumber maker? Just curious.

Dale, Been thinking about buying the Alaskan mill or the haddon. After using the haddon do you think it is better then the Alaskan.
Dale, I am wanting to cross cut a log like that to make wood circles for a wood floor and epoxy. However my miter saw only cuts 3 1/2" in diameter. Is there a way to cut up to 8" in diameter without a mill.
Yeah, with a chain saw, an old wood hand saw, a bandsaw. Many ways to do it.
I went to the store bought a 2 by6 =$3.50 by the time you cut this one
Try buying a hardwood 2x6 for that price, lol.
@@bdub78dub90 Beat me to it.
Try cutting some Aussie hardwood, it creates a whole new ball game.
You didn't buy red oak! That board would've cost you $$$$, that's if you can find one that size. I paid over $3 a foot for red oak crown molding and it was 2-3/4" X 5/8" Red oak isn't the same as Douglas fir
Worth it now in July 2021.
awful close to left foot at start it appears
Dull as that chain was it wouldn't matter, he'd know it was cutting his boot before it made it to his foot
+Dale Haddon is this your Lumbermaker (I bought the Haddon Lumbermaker a couple months back)?
I made a DIY Alaskan Mill and found a wedge helps keep the blade from binding. as for the Joker's comment about a rip chain, just ignore him. You did this correctly and for what you're doing.
Rip chain does make a difference....I use one on Alaskan chainsaw mill....! Thanks
Have tried full & semi-chisel, and ripping chain for milling, even got a good price on a reel of ripping chain. No noticeable difference in ease or quality of cut. When I'm gonna run pieces through a planer after, I just focus on keeping the cutters sharp, and depth gauges deep. (Getting ready for truckloads of black cherry.)
Sure makes a difference when your chain is sharp. He had sawdust coming from the chain, not chunks of wood. But if you don't have a strong chainsaw I guess having a dull chain keeps the saw from bogging down.
