    Lol, back in the day before jdjetting existed jd was helping people tune their carbs on the forums for free. His recommendations were spot on. Glad his business took off!

    Thank for the thorough video. I have a 2001 CR250 with a Mikuni TMX. I've had the bike for 19 years. It took me a good 2-3 years playing with jets and needle clip positions to get the carb dialed, but once I got it, no complaints. This video confirmed my suspicion that a large number of people singing the praises of the single circuit carbs either don't under stand jetting, or gave up too soon.

    Great video. At Texas elevation I agree that the Mikuni with JD runs a little stronger then the SC2. When I was at Sargents CO I had to go about 30-35 click leaner from stock setting on the SC2 . I was running the richer needle. But for me it was pretty easy to go leaner - about 5 seconds to adjust clicker. I am in the camp of not wanting to rejet when riding at different elevations (Tx 700-CO 11000) and not ready to go TPI yet. I chose the SC2 mainly because all adjustments are external and can be done on the trail. Lectron still required removal of the slide. The bottom line is for folks who still want to stay in the carb world - there are options.

      KTM Trailrider Thanks! Yeah, 700 to 11,000 is a lot of elevation change. For the value vs. performance if I were heading out to a low or high elevation location every so often it’s not a big inconvenience to loosen two screws and turn the carb on it’s side to change a jet or needle. I believe just a jet change in most scenarios where I ride with the JD kit. Honestly quicker than an oil change. If I have to do that weekly then that’d be another story.
      On another note I’m glad you got to ride Sargents! That place is really good!
      You said it, there sure are lots of options out there. Usually the saying you get what you pay for is very true. In this case I feel like the performance gap and price gap don’t warrant the difference between $79 and say $500-$725. Just my experience and opinion.
      Happy riding buddy! 👍

      Bryan Burton Roger that. Sargents was fun. Got on some trail that had a lot of exposure. I won’t be doing those solo anymore. Came across several hikers as well along the CDT. Sargents is like the best place to setup camp and launch to many trail riding playgrounds in CO. Another really fun place was Hartman Rocks outside of Gunnison. Will be heading back to CO next summer to ride the BDR on my new 19 690 enduro. John Denver got it right - Rocky Mountain High.

      KTM Trailrider oh man you called it! Such a great area. Sketchy solo for sure. Let us know when you come out next time. We try to get up to those areas as much as we can in the summer. Limited window for dry trail conditions in the high country. Take care 👍

    Great review ,I have a 18 tx 300 ,19 tx 300 and a 18 250 exc and ran some different setups as well ,before I tell what I found 1 . I don’t do altitude and only 5 deg c to 30 deg c @ 300 metres above sea level ,semi technical riding { 57 years old) .ok first thing I think you are right about the mikuni ,stock I wasn’t happy with the 1/8 th throttle opening ,fitted the JD kit and was very happy with it , afterwards I fitted a new head from 2stroke performance and guess what ? Carb was was even better ,makes me think it’s not all the carbs fault,I fitted a Keihen next and I feel it’s slightly better than the mikuni but that might be personal preference ( splitting hairs) ,I have tried a lectron on an older 300 and didn’t like it but again may not have been set up .i have the ignition mod from 2 stroke performance ,their head and a keihen 38 mm on there can’t be happier but honestly the mikuni as you said with the JD kit is awsome value for money cheersd

    I just put my lectron on the shelf after about 60hrs on my 2019 300xc bought a keihin with a jd jet kit and oh man do I love my bike again lectron was smooth but definitely not exciting way more torque right off the bottom and runs super crisp I was a little worried coming off the lectron but not anymore plus learning to jet is easy and good to know in my opinion

  • @Phil2stroke
    @Phil2stroke 4 роки тому +2

    the Keihin is the best option for someone ho rides tracks/ with not too much elevation changes or is willing to jet the bike for temps or elevation (it’s the best option for tunability)

  • @idrissalam
    @idrissalam 4 роки тому +1

    Price comparaison, you are right. But i think people that goes with smartcarb and lectron is fuel consomption and not having to open and change jeting.
    Personaly i have the smartcarb sc2 on my 2017 tc250 bigbored 300 and doesn’t have any leak from the pipe. My real problem with that carb was the price, as you said very expensive.

  • @craighoffman6876
    @craighoffman6876 2 роки тому +2

    Agree with your findings. The stock carb once jetted and tweaked with the JD kit is great. KTM specified a really stupid stepped needle with the Mikuni - then they "compensated" for that by putting in too lean pilot jet. JD fixes all this, plus the jet block issue. My buddy has a TX 300 with the modded Mikuni and it works perfectly.
    I have a Lectron on my '18 300 XC, for me it is worth it as I live in CO and ride in UT and I am lazy! Once dialed, the Lectron is like TPI without all the complexity. Have ridden in varying elevations and temps from 4K to 12K and 35F to 90F, never have to touch my Lectron. My Lectron, from Slavens, came set a little rich, but that was easy to fix. The 4-1 metering rod works great once dialed on my 300.
    Super picky types say the Lectron is a little "softer" responding than the stock carb. Maybe, but my bike also wears a high compression head and it is not "soft" in any way, it will rip your arms off - LOL. The TPIs I have ridden feel "soft" off closed throttle in comparison, and of course will also rip your arms off if provoked. That is not a criticism of TPI by the way - the controllable linear TPI response from closed throttle is nice in the gnar, but I like the zappy and more pop corn popper two stroke like on it's toes carb response character for the simple reason that it is fun.
    If I lived in an area where my riding did not involve such extreme elevation and temp ranges, the stock carb is great after modding with the JD kit. The stock carb is built well and the stock throttle cable is better than the semi crappy cable that comes with the Lectron.

    • @craighoffman6876

      @@woodworm3615 Have seen the new Billetron. That looks cool, the best thing is the choke is on the left side where it belongs. I have no experience with it, but it looks like a nice carb.
      I like the Lectrons for Colorado where I live, as they deal with the temp and elevation changes well. A dialed Keihin or Mikuni is a bit sharper though, I think. It is more of a trait than a big deal though, my 300 is plenty aggressive.
      For most, I think they can do quite well with a jetted and corrected stock carb, no need for an expensive Lectron. This coming from a guy who has one - ;)

    I have to agree. I have my Mikuni running awesome with stock needles and a few tweaks (Jet Block Gasket, 5.75 slide, S1 Needle Jet). I have ridden my exact same bike (buddies bikes) with a SmartCarb and Lectron and the Mikuni out performs them hands down. In fact two of my buddies have dumped the Lectron and gone back to the Mikuni. My jetting works well from 4,000-10,000'. A little bit of gurgle at 10K' but not enough to be annoying.

    • @FunVenturesBTR

      Reno 1960 sounds like you’ve got it dialed man! The curiosity got to me so I wanted to try out the options. I’ve heard some really good information, from someone much smarter than me, on why a single circuit carb (Smart Carb / Lectron) can’t pull as well as a multi circuit carb ( Mikuni / Keihin) and it made very good sense to me. And also why those single circuit carbs still need adjustment and won’t ever truly be truly self adjusting. Hence why they still need to be adjusted. Thanks for sharing your experience and your mods. Glad you’re enjoying your setup! Have a good one! 👍

    Hey Bryan great video. What settings are you running on your JD Jet Kit? I have the Keihin PW Air striker carb with the stic metering block installed and it runs pretty good. You are not supposed to touch the settings all that much on the Keihin but I noticed when I did some elevation changes that I had to fiddle with it a little to get it running right. But I noticed the Keihin has a little bit more power but when your doing technical trail riding having more power isn't all that great sometimes, just more wheel spin. I really liked the Mikuni with the JD jet kit as well, just a lot more smoother and less wheel spin, just my two cents. Keep up the good videos.
