Raising the A's alone - A-FRAME CABIN BUILD OFF THE GRID

  • Hi guys, in this video I'm building the A's for my cabin and, of course, I'm doing it in my very own particular way: I'm using the spare boards from the subfloor project to save some money (instead of buying more lumber) and, in a nice mix of methodical calculations and brutal force with a pinch of not-so-scientifically accurate careless whacks, I'm trying to raise the rafters and make everything look as straight as possible.
    Sometimes it feels weird that all this is still up and sturdy: but in a good way.
    Thank you so much for stopping by! Let's stay in touch for more videos :)

    The first A really frames the tree on the background…. What a nice place to have a cabin…. Thanks for sharing.

    I would double up one each end with another frame in between the two end frames. Just a suggestion for extra strength! It really doesn't take much and would add much more strength and stability! But love what you're doing! Keep it up and thanks for taking us along!

      I see, that is the overhang just outside the entryway, so it doesn't really need much support: otherwise I would have definitely had another frame between those 2. Thank you for being here!

    They look all lined up right.
    I see the bird-mouthing at the base plate. Does that get nailed into a sheet of plywood?
    How will you finish the trusses at the base to keep out the elements? A soffit board of some kind?

    • @mdoffgrid
      @mdoffgrid  Рік тому

      Hi Ray, the birdmouth is nailed into a sheet of osb which is nailed into the two joists that make the perimeter of the exterior frame.
      I'll cover the trusses with a roofing system: osb panels, hydro resistant membrane and metal roof panels: everything as light as possible

    Great video! What’s the total Square footage of this build? Looking to do something similar in the near future.

      Thank you! This is 32 m², 8 meters long by 4 meters wide. Good luck for your build!

    As long as you are happy with it that is all that matters. I designed a 14x14 A frame that has been built by many people and they also do their own modifications to suit their needs. Looks like you won't have room for a loft. Is this a recreation cabin or some other use?

    • @mdoffgrid
      @mdoffgrid  Рік тому +1

      No, I won't have a loft. I'm not confident yet to build something like that lol and also it wouldn't be much useful to me. I'll use this cabin as a 'man cave' more or less

    What is the dimension of the lumber that you used for the frame?

    • @mdoffgrid
      @mdoffgrid  7 місяців тому

      It's 2x10 board cut in half, so it's more or less a 2x5 in (5x12,5 cm)

    Me personally I wouldn't build an A frame because it would be sacrificing space over comfort. He only has four to five feet in the center to walk standing up.

      Maybe he dont like wasted space, as one gets in a box house.

      @Yoshiben that's why I said " Me Personally'. Everyone has their own preferences in their space, it wasn't said to insult but to give creative opinion.

    Get rid of those yellow tools and get your self a set of Milwaukee tools . My skill saw in Milwaukee would destroy that board cutting it full thickness .

    If you precut all your rafter spacers at 25.5" they automatically be set at 24" OC. . . You need to learn some more building skills - those rafter ridge gussets are insufficient to hold the shape of that ridge. you will need to add collar ties within 1/3 of the top length of rafter.
