When I did the second set of seals on my 86 GL 1200, I read a paper from a cylinder expert that stated that dirt was the main problem for seals. So I did the same things that are on dirt bikes and picked up a pair of shock covers/same thing as gators and made them fit to keep out dirt. I've done my seals 2 times and the bike has 60+ thousand on the OD. Good video and thanks!
Yo I'm so glad you are still spreading your knowledge making videos. I watched your video on tuning the carbs and it helped my bike immensely. Thanks man!!
Awesome Cody, thanks so much. I just finished rebuilding both forks on my 93 CB750. I used a thick strip of Gorilla tape instead of a seal driver. With a light coat of grease on the seal, it dropped right in with minimal effort. Like you, I also got lucky with one of my bolts that came right out with a battery impact. The other one fought a little bit but I got it out with a manual impact and a socket wrench. I wouldn't have attempted this without seeing your video. Thanks again.
Thank you so much for all your great videos! I've got OE seals, bushings and crush washers for the bottom bolt ready to go for my '07 VT750C2 Shadow. Someone along the line put "All Balls" or similar seals in, and I'm chanigng all back to OEM this winter.
I'm a Mercedes tech but I previously was the lead Alignment Tech a decade ago for Williamsburg Honda. There are almost zero informational videos or forums about the VF750C Magna 3rd Gen you are working on needless to say thanks so much. My dust boots are cracking. I just wanted to know how to get the forks off my 99 Magna to swap the dust boots before the seals get contaminated. Thank you!!
Thanks Cody, I'm up to the fork rebuild in my 100,000 mile (160,000 km) overhaul of my Honda ST1100, and it's good to watch this to check that I'm on track and doing things correctly.
Although I'm glad for my centre stand and straps to hold the tail down, rather than a car jack & the side stand with a 650 pound bike
I thought that you were going to snap the bolt that goes in the bottom of the fork. Lol. I snapped that bottom bolt on an early 70's Honda I was fixing up. What a pain it was to fix it. That repair could be a video.....lol have a great 4th weekend.
Great content as always!
Thank-you Cody!
Excellent video!
Thanks for the video brah I’m pretty sure this would be very useful very soon lol
Just about to get my hands in a job like this, I've done a couple, best to watch and apply anything that can help the situation. Thanks enjoyed your video, what state are you located, coming from the mitten here. 👍✌️
Hi Cody love you videos they are so informative and the detail you go into them is great.
I have a 1996 YZF1000R Thunderace with a leaking fork seal and l have all the parts to do the job but the only thing l cant confirm is how much oil each fork leg takes.
The internet search's give me 5 or 6 different amounts, can you tell me how much oil l need in each leg please in mls as that the measurement we use in Australia mls.
I love Magna~
Thanks mate👍
Go ride this weekend
Thank you for the video. I am not sure I understand about "seating the axle". What exactly is happening when you apply the brake.
Some times the fork bottoms can get hung up in the axle causing them to “pinch” inward towards the wheel or the exact opposite.
Seating the axle allows things to move back into a normal position to lock everything in.
In other words, just do it! 😂
I rebuilt the damper rod forks on one of my Kawasakis (I swapped out the damper rod for an aftermarket one that uses actual cartridge fork valves built into the damper rod), and I had to swap over that (yellow) plastic piston ring and was told not to break it as you can’t buy it on its own. You have to buy the whole damper rod to get a new one. So I was careful with it.
I don’t know about Honda.
The fork, also resprung for my weight, now behaves 90% like a cartridge fork. The minimum size they make is for 41mm forks.
Working on my '95 Magna vf750, I followed the steps you laid out and all went well UNTIL I tried to get the tubes separated and they would NOT come apart, even with two of us pulling. Any ideas? Great videos BTW!!
Did you happen to find a way I’m having the same problem and nothing has helped
🤙
1995 magna starts good, but doesn’t rev up without chocking and spattering any ideas?
I taped the axel holes with electrical tape
Get job can Upgrade fork oil Weight be applied or stay factory grade🦖
Stay factory. The suspension is just fine!
Ok so I had a shop reseal my forks and after a couple of months I am getting a bottom out clunk. It's not all the time but I have got it bouncing the forks stationary and some bumps on the road. I did not seat the axle because I followed my owners manual for reinstalling the wheel. Is this why I get a clunk?
Also, thank you so much for the great quality videos!
Is this the same as a 86 magna with air?
