This is a traditional English song which became a New Orleans jazz standard. here's my version on my old Borgani simple (albert) system clarinet.
No other horn equal or above a clarinet can blues out the blues like this, boy I love this kind of music, this is pure new orleans.
I can listen to this ALL DAY. A great jazzy/bluesy rendition.
Your videos on the Albert clarinet have been helping me immensely while learning the instrument and this is just a treat as one of my favorite songs.
I am just starting to get into jazz clarinet after years away from classical clarinet in my youth. I like how your improvisation keeps the meoldy at the forefront rather than going crazy with runs and tempo changes and losing the connection to the melody that alot of jazz players seem to do to show their skill. I also like your tone and pitch. The guy that posted about your being flat was wrong. You are right on at the low end of the pitch, where it sounds good for a laid back song in minor key.
Playing slightly off pitch is how the vocalists sing jazz / blues / bossa, etc. The clarinet is merely expressing what the voice should do anyway.

A fine quality sound, a sonorous deep clarinet sound quality, easier for my musical ear than the higher pitched 'squeel' of the traditional clarinet style of performance. St. James infirmary, a classic in the dixieland repertoire.
gotta love those old Albert's and your improvisations are spectacular in their simplicity, even I (an amateur player with R13 Buffet)can play along easily with your style
I don’t think there’s a single part of this I don’t like. Your control of the horn is incredible and the sound amazingly beautiful and smooth. I’ve been off of b flat ever since I picked up bass, but this really makes me want to learn again.
Tasty, couldn't resist picking my my R13 Festival. And this from a weak assed doubler, I found this inspiring.
Thanks Jim.
One Of the best versions I have heard of this , great tone and skills.
Nice one Ian.
I just loop this and listen all day.
So beautiful. Why ever did the clarinet become less popular in later Jazz, I wonder.
Your high range sounds beautiful! I want to hear more! Whenever you get up there I feel good inside.
Excellent sound and I love this song!
Super Ian! My group is thinking of doing this tune. I sold my clarinet a couple of years ago, just to consolidate, but I'm hoping my EWI that I just bought can help fill the hole. Keep cranking! I'm using your ideas here for my group. Thanks ever so much!
Commovente! Bellissima interpretazione!
Ahh, beautiful. Somber and soothing, an excellent take on a classic song!
I would listen you for hours. Bravo.
Beautiful as always!
What a full bluesy sound of clarinet !
SAXLY
Thanks saxly!
Hi Ted, thanks for your kind comment. I had a Yamaha midi sax a while back and although I could play it I had trouble making it play as well as a real instrument. Please let me know how you get on with the EWI. I expect they have been improved by now. Post a video and send me a link.
C'est beau, tout simplement !
OMG! Your tone is so full! Love it!
Dam that's nice, never herd st j sound better.
Hi Patrice, I always improvise using my ear rather than by reading the chords.
Really wonderful, enjoying this very much.
Very nice. Great jazz clarinet tone.
Thanks Kenmare
That's the way to do it! 👍🏻😄
I listened once more ...again , it is very nice :D

Thanks saxpaaaaaasion!
Ian, this is a much better backing track behind you than the B-I-A-B version you posted on UA-cam. Could you please post this one ? Thanks !
Nice sound :)
Hello Ian, very nice one! I would like to buy this backing track but I cannot find it on you website. Track that is "St James Infirmary Blues Jazz Organ Dm 120 X5" is not the right track. Can you please tell me what track is this? Best regards!
Hey Ian, I love very much your two improvisations. Did by chords or feeling ?
Fulltenor
really great :D
Would you tell us where you got this divine instrument?

What brand of clarinet do you play on. Fabulous
It's a vintage E J Albert made in Brussels.

the english song didn't know blues or jazz which was an origin of new orleans.
:)
he so out of tune flat!
I don't think so.
Intonation sounds spot on to me. Where in the sequence does it sound flat to you ?
