- How to clean cast iron after cooking bacon? That's today's video.
Okay, so the bacon is cooking. The bacon grease is strained and poured up in the jar. But look what we have leftover.
So I'm going to show you one simple trick to do this. Now, as you can see, we've cooked our bacon, we've strained our bacon grease, but we've got all of this burnt stuff in the skillet left behind.
And, unfortunately, this skillet is cold. What ideally would have been the best thing to do was to clean this skillet when it was still hot. We could have taken it over and run hot water in it and cleaned it real easy.
One simple trick and a tip that you need to remember is if you have hot cast iron, you need hot water. If you got cold cast iron, you can start out with some cold water and just pour that into your skillet. We've got the stove on, and so we'll begin to heat this water up and just start to scrape this with our wooden spatula. Look how easy that comes off, folks.
So as you can see, what really happens in bacon. Bacon is real good. We all love bacon. Everybody loves bacon. Bacon makes everything better, and it even makes a cast-iron skillet better. At least the bacon grease does.
But now bacon itself will burn and stick to the skillet. And that's what we have here. We've got bits and pieces of bacon that are burnt and stuck onto the skillet.
And so what we have to do is clean this out. And you can do it simply with just a little bit of hot water. So what we're going to do now once we've got this heated up the water has released all of these burnt pieces of bacon, we're going to simply move over to the sink and clean the rest of this out.
Okay, so we're over at the sink. We've got all this water heated up all these bacon particles have released. So all we need to do now is just basically take our stiff bristle brush, and we're just going to take and just lightly scrub the rest of these bacon particles out of here.
And rinse that out like that.
Then the next thing we're going to do naturally is we're going to take and just dry it out with a paper towel. And we would want to take and put it back on the stove and oil it and season it down like we normally do.
And that's how to clean cast iron after cooking bacon, folks. Uh, UA-cam has left you a video right here made specifically for you. So click on that, and we'll see you over there after a while.
Y'all have a great day. It's Mike and Mrs. Cast Iron. We'll see you later. Bye Bye.

The sugar in that bacon likes to stick to the cast iron skillet! God job cleaning Mr. Cast Iron! Now if I could just get you to dust & sweep 😂
Lol, thank you! Yes, that’s exactly right. The reason it burns and sticks is because of the sugar that is in the bacon! 🥓🥓
Theresa, just sprinkle some sugar on what ever needs to be swept or
dusted. VOILA, problem solved. Remember to "Reseason" him after! 😅
Lol now Mark!!
Watch out uncle 😁❤️
Lol, I know it, Eric!!

You're the man, Mike! Great information.
Thanks Ian!! Hot to hot… cold to cold bro!! Cold to hot can crack!! Don’t do crack lol!!😂😂
@@MrCastIron hahahaha I would cry if I saw a cast iron skillet crack. My dad gave their huge cast iron skillet. It's deeper and bigger. So we have 2 now. Very cool. I am pretty excited. Actually that's the rule with the a Wok if you are cooking with one. Make a dish, use hot water to wash it out real quick, and get to cookin again. I used to work at golden corral, and they have or had the area with bourbon chicken and fried rice and a few other items. I had people looking forward to my wok cooking. Hahaha. Lots of compliments. The good ole boys loved my wok items, and I had a nice old lady tell me I made their fried chicken perfect and it made her proud. Hahaha I was laughing. She was african american. She told me I make chicken like "one of us" no kidding. We were laughing.
Yes I would probably cry too! So what size skillet did you get!!?? And, what are planning on cooking in it first!!??
@@MrCastIron it has got be at least a 12 or 14 inch. If that sounds right. It looks like a newer one from Main stays. I guess that's wal mart. My little one is 10 1/2 inch. I can set the little one I the new one and you can see pan still. It's pretty big. And ya know what? I gotta figure it out!! You have any requests? Lol
That’s a perfect size for cooking just about anything!! Cook bacon lol 🥓🥓
Great video Mike! Im learning so much about how to use these pans! I will be an expert before I know it...Hahaha.
Thanks Karen!! You already are a pro in my book!!
Yes sir Bacon makes everything better. Great tip Mike. LOL I just read Mrs. Cast Iron's post. 😂😂
Right on Billy! She's funny ain't she lol!
Wooow very nice share 👍👍💐💐💐💐
Thank you so much 🙂
Yep that's a great technique for cleaning up after desserts like cobblers. 🤘🤘
Yes, sir, you are right about that! I’ve been putting parchment paper down in mine when I do cobblers, and the cleanup is so much easier. It doesn’t stop it all but the majority of it!
Good stuff
Glad you enjoyed it Hobie!!
Ok! No detergent! Got it ^_^ thanks for being such a good teacher
You're so welcome, Rhiannon! You can use a mild detergent occasionally, but I wouldn't let your pan soak in it for any length of time. If you ever have any questions about cast iron, don't hesitate to reach out to me, and I'll be happy to help if I can! Have a great week ahead, my friend!
That's why I have a sink of red-hot water ready to quickly swill out my skillet (at least have a good go at it) before I even sit down for my meal. So much easier.
I like with cast iron grill i have compared to some my others pots and pans. You dont have to wait for it to cool down to clean it like some of the other types of pots and pans i have.
No that’s right. It’s actually better to clean it when it is still pretty hot!
I love bacon 🥓
This is such a helpful video.... thanks for sharing all the tips. 🖤 Now off to making myself some bacon.... 😜
Thank you and you’re welcome too my friend!! I’m glad you found it helpful! Save me a couple pieces of bacon okay!!?? 🥓🥓😂😂😂
@@MrCastIron For sure! 😜
I knew I could count on you!! So do you cook in cast iron!!??
@@MrCastIron lol. I have a cast iron, but I cook in it maybe like once a month or every other month... mostly because I'm still learning what all I can do with it, and how to properly maintain it. I'm new to cooking as a whole 🤷🏻♂️😄
Well, that’s ok because we all had to start from the beginning too!! I’m glad you found our channel, and I hope our videos help you!! If you ever have a question about cast iron, I’ll be more than happy to help you in any way I can, my friend!!
Bacon, bacon, bacon. The sugars in the bacon cause the trouble. Thank you for the lesson, Mike. Stay safe and stay cool
You got that right Sean! It's all the sugars fault!! You're welcome and thanks again buddy!!
Hello🙋♀️new here, quick question, after cleaning burnt bacon and returning to stove to season, did you us bacon grease again to season or a different oil? thanks...only watched a few so far but loving your videos🤗thanks for all the info!
You’re welcome, and thank you, too, for a great question. The answer is yes; I used bacon grease, but you can use other oils if you want to.
Wouldn’t recommend seasoning with bacon grease unless you want everything you cook to have a hint of bacon.
And there’s nothing wrong with that is there?
@@MrCastIron eh to each their own. I personally only like for bacon to taste like bacon.
Camp Chef Cast Iron Conditioner works great. Heat the pan, use a small dab and then pat dry w/paper towel
that brush is equilavent to the rough side on the sponge?
Well, not really.
Everybody does love bacon!
Well, not everyone Tama Sue but we sure do!! Thanks for checking it out my friend! Have a great weekend!
I try to catch it while it's hot but all too often I neglect it, so this is advice I can use! 👍
I completely understand that, Pete! When I’m hungry, I’m more concerned about eating than I am at cleaning, lol! So I end up with a cold skillet to clean later!
Exactly!! I wish I could get my hands on some of that streaky bacon you use and talk about! Is it smoked flavored and salty??
@@MrCastIron The regular back and streaky bacon has a sweet and salty cure and we can buy it smoked or green (sic) non-smoked. Our cure is not unlike the cure on regular American bacon in flavour. I alternate between buying smoked and green. Green has a shorter shelf life though due to the absence of nitrates in the curing process. There are also a few select small producers who use dry-curing with all kinds of flavourings, but you have to reach deeper into your wallet for dry-cured.
Very interesting! I much prefer smoked to non -smoked bacon, don’t you? So the fattier pieces are from the pork belly, and your non-fatty pieces are from the tenderloin area! Is that correct?
@@MrCastIron Yes correct, our back bacon is cut through the loin noisette. For pure flavour I prefer smoked streaky bacon, where there's fat there's flavour. We also have a cut called Middle which comes from the side of the animal. It is intermediate in cost, fat content and flavour between streaky bacon and back bacon. We see Middle less and less, I think it gets used up in other processes these days. We just dissected a porker Mike :))
Hey Mike! Now it is time to cook some bacon.. See you on the next one.
Lol I’m out of bacon after filming this one Skip!! Save me a couple pieces ok!!??
How high is the heat when you put the skillet back on the stove?
Hi Jenn! Great question and thanks for asking. I made this video and hope it helps. How To Season A Cast Iron Skillet On The Stove

Hi Mr. & Mrs. Cast Iron 👋
Hello Ms.Lisa!! How are you!!??
@@MrCastIron GOOD 👍
That’s great!! I’m glad you stopped by, and thanks for checking out the video! It’s better to clean it while it’s hot, but it’s pretty easy to clean a cold skillet, too, lol!!
I'd recommend warming up the skillet first, then wipe out as much grease as possible with a paper towel before using water. That way, you keep the amount of grease going down (and potentially clogging up) your pipes at a minimum.
Yes, sir, you are correct, and that's what we did here. I have seen some videos where they didn't, and I'm thinking the same thing you mentioned about grease down the drain and eventually the clogging problem they are facing, lol!
All the extra time it takes to use and prepare makes me want to return my Lodge pizza cast iron pan i just got today. lmao
Lol! Ah, it ain’t that bad, my friend! Before too long, you will be loving that cast iron pizza pan so much you’ll be making them all the time!!
I just wanna lick that BACON grease out 😋 great tip 👍
LOL I'd like to see that!! Thanks again buddy!!
Spent hours building up a sexy seasoning with grapeseed oil and basically everything came off after making bacon!
That's weird. I hate it for you, but I have never heard of that happening before. I cook bacon all of the time too. Anyway, thanks for sharing this with us, my friend!
@@MrCastIron After scrubbing off the crud I revealed purple and blue temper colors on the edges of the bottom. It is obvious that the center got way hotter. The center got hot enough during the stovetop seasoning process that the bottom seasoning burned off.
Yeah, it sounds like the burner was too high or something.
