    These stories make me sad that women have been abused and discriminated against when they get pregnant after an affair. Every time, it's the women who bare the brunt of an unplanned and unwanted pregnancy in the eyes of society. I wish we could hold accountable all the men who just walked away scott-free while the women either committed suicide, died from a botched abortion procedure, or languished in poverty for having a child born out of wedlock.

    I live a few hundred metres away from where Gorse Hall stood, the now demolished hall and its grounds are now a beautiful park with views of the old mill town of Stalybridge and Manchester city. George was not popular amongst his workers, maybe it was one of them! Although my personal theory is it was a relative of the maid which took her own life, an honour killing!
    Recently a monument to this incident was erected amongst the foundations of the old hall.

    Why is it that if 3 people who saw the intruder and identified him, and 1 person provides an alibi (which very often prove to be false), the 1 person’s testimony overrides the testimony of the other 3? Just wondering.

    • @skullsaintdead
      @skullsaintdead Рік тому +1

      It’s an interesting assertion but i think it’s usually because eyewitness testimony is often a relative stranger glancing at a guy, easy to mistake for someone else. Whereas, alibis may be more friends/family interacting with the suspect, so it’s given more cadence. But, I agree, it’s kind of odd if both eyewitnesses & alibi-givers barely interacted with him. Perhaps it’s also impacted by the presumption of innocence & giving more weight to alibis?

    • @lynfawcett221
      @lynfawcett221 9 місяців тому +1

      If the Police did their job correctly at the time, they would find others to corroborate the alibi given. But this may not have been admitted as evidence for some reason.

    What sticks out to me is that the man is no natural killer. He didn’t want to use the gun, he just wanted to be feared, respected. Yes, he stabbed George multiple times but I get the sense George was a terrifying man, the sort with no qualms about running at a man with a gun. Twice. I think George started beating the man (as he had done to the trespasser before) but didn’t realise the man had a knife. The murderer was scared. Panic turned him to frenzy.
    Interesting case.

  • @ajkleipass

    This case has a lot of speculation predicated on assumptions of facts not in evidence. Conversations in public do not indicate fornication in private. A corpse in a frozen body of water is not proof of pregnancy nor suicide. And so on....
    An autopsy of the young woman should have been performed to determine her cause of death. If we allow for the pregnancy scenario, suicide is one possible reason for her death, but not the only one. She could have bled out from a miscarriage - natural or intentionally caused, her body then being dumped. She could have been murdered by her lover - or his wife. Or she could have been killed by some random rapist / murderer.
    His death might have been revenge for hers, but it could also have been coincidence. The local authorities were not entirely competent with police procedures, from failure to autopsy a dead woman, to removing a protective detail on a night where it was probably common knowledge that the police would be needed elsewhere. For that matter, if it was all hands on deck for the police, might that bar have been so crowded that someone could slip away into the crowd long enough to commit a crime and then return without his absence being noted?
    And why did the servant hang himself? Did he ferry the relative in secret to and from the bar? Did he have a part to play in the young woman's death?
    Were the foreign men real or just as speculative as the pregnancy?
    Alas, so many questions for which we shall never see an actual answer.

    I hate how being pregnant outside of marriage brought so much grief to the women. I know what God says and I also know what he says about judging others too. We are human and people make mistakes but no human should judge another. So many tragic situations back then because of people judging instead of helping. It's easy to judge but being kind seems to be impossible for some people. These same people think they are beyond reproach, no one is perfect on this earth but apparently they missed that part in the Bible about judge not lest ye be judged. They will feel pretty bad when they get judged for what other people did. I will never understand why people only want to live by certain things in the Bible. It's not meant to be like that. The world would be a better place if people tried to lend a hand instead of making life as difficult as possible for someone.

    It’s unfortunate that the background music is as loud as the story . They are competing , I wanted to finish to the end but couldn’t. The music Never has to be so loud :(

    My theory is be George was involved in some shady business deal with some bad people. Rich business men often are. At some point he took Maria with him to a meeting and she saw/heard something she wasn’t supposed to. They got worried she would go to police so they had her killed. After that they were probably worried George would go to police himself after they killed someone he appeared to care deeply about. That’s probably why he was so quick to go to the window as he knew they were there for him and he may have even known who the person was. Once the police started guarding George’s house I can only assume they would have thought he had become an informant for the police in return for his protection. After they killed him the only other person likely to know what was going on was the coach driver as he would of taken George to some of the meetings. My explanation for why the man would’ve been on the property and attacked the couple. Maybe George had mentioned something about money or papers that he hid/buried on the grounds.

    They should of aimed the gun at that guy until the police arrived. Also, no one said that the guy had an accent. Meaning it could have been a local.

    This is great. A while ago, I saw this story on Mark John McGuire's channel, 'They Got Away with Murder'. He looked at in in more detail and from a slightly different viewpoint, but it's all very interesting! Thank you. I'll put the link to his video here, if that's ok ua-cam.com/video/RFEFZeqJAZs/v-deo.html

    How many people commit sewer-side by drowning themselves? That number must be super low, right? More often than not your natural human instinct for survival must kick in before you can go through with it. Idk. Maybe I'm wrong. Just a guess.

    Sorry to say but, although some of the details in the commentary are accurate, there are so many major errors in the reporting of the facts that I had to stop watching halfway through. Also, the pronunciation of Stalybridge is completely wrong. David Cameron once pronounced it this way in the House of Commons and it was such an obvious, glaring error that uproar, laughter and ridicule filled the house. As the video work is really good, I would say it’s worth taking down, doing the research and re-recording the narration. Sorry.

      I know I hate to sound bougie, but it’s one of my biggest pet peeves when people miss pronounce things that should be relatively straightforward or easy to verify per their research into a video. I don’t know why it’s really grinds my gears lol.

    Potentially interesting narrative, but ruined by the use of stock photos, most of them obviously anachronistic. Better to use no illustrations at all, than to use such egregiously inappropriate ones.
