Sophies world was one of my first philosophy books. I really enjoyed it. I read when I was about 16 y.o and was a great experience. I also really like the ending, very unexpected! I belive my first philosophy book was a tiny book by Seneca. Reading the Stoics is a great idea for beginners. Very down to earth writing, beautiful and applicable in daily life. Epicurus and Cicero are also quite easy.

Sophie’s world is brilliant!! I only read it a year or two ago but it was a great experience. I have only briefly touched on the stoics. Marcus Aurelius’ meditations and Senecas letters to a stoic. I am more drawn to Plato and the Neoplatonic philosopher. But any kind of philosophical inquiry is a great workout for the mind! Thanks for commenting 😀🙏

Schopenhauer’s Cat is about 1200 pages long but if you skip to the end you get to the footnotes, where Wittgenstein’s dog is lying.

Happy new year Kev! How’s the book coming along? What book are you reading. You should definitely check out Ryan Holiday. He is a young modern author who speaks about Stoicism. Have you ever read any Plato?

I’m must confess, that I find philosophy rather abstruse, halfway through Sophie’s world , and I’ve tried to recall what each philosophers projects were, and to my horror, I can’t remember one, be it the natural, or the classical philosophers. I’ve armed myself with Russell’s history of western philosophy.

    Hi, Lewis,
I also love reading, learning and practicing philosophy in my daily life.
I really recommend you to check this book out, you will blow your mind.
One of my friends family who were a professor at Harvard university recommended me to read this book.
    “The buddha in your mirror”

Where could I get hard copies of these books here in Africa?
Am in Kenya 🇰🇪. Eagerly waiting for your suggestion.

I can’t help you finding the hard copies of the books, but most of the famous and influential works can be found in PDF form by searching online. Best of luck 🙏

Will you recommend some books about history of medicine 🤔

    • @bookclub5291
      @bookclub5291  4 роки тому +1

Hi. If I'm honest, I can't say that I have read much on the history of medicine. With that being said, I did a little research and have the links to a couple that I think could be good below:
The Cambridge History of Medicine: amzn.to/3rMUjrf
The History of Medicine: A Very Short Introduction: amzn.to/3n7Ijgt
      I hope these help! :)

    Hey Lewis!
I been watching your stuff for sometime now. I love the the the classic stories and Plato's works among others I haven't yet had the time to go over.
I'm only a student studying philosophy but for what fir what it's worth in my opinion people starting out shouldn't read Russell. You want to avoid people like that.
Like empiricists, Analytical philosophers (Like Russell, Wittgenstein etc) and who ever is
    close with Scientistism
Scientist aren't Philosophers. And it shouldn't be suprising if I asserted here that Russell is not a philosopher but a follower of Scientistism. I remember listening to Russell's writing on Aristotle and I actually got angry because of the nonsense he was saying
And secondarily you want to avoid Marxists,
Psycho-analysts, Feminists, Gender theorists, Post-modernist( like Darida, Judith Butler) simply because they are bad people.
Try avoiding Phenomenologists and Existentialists also, for best possible result.
I don't really read much but I listened to lectures on philosophy. But I'd have an overview of a lot of things. I'd just recommend you begin with Shopenhimer works. I never read him, but he's on my list because I heard enough about him, and checked sample of his prose pieces and liked it. He might make you miserable because he was miserable himself and you are to be warned on that but I heard he had way of speaking that is respectable. What you should expect from reading Shopenhimer, entertainment and introduction to real Philosophy. The reason why I recommend him is because I heard he's really funny. I want to read him too. But I'm bad at those. I made a mental note to do us but who knows if I'd get to it.
Here it is, skip the preface and biography and go straight to the author's first essay: on authorship
