- In this video we explore 3 Van Halen Intros that use harmonics. Van Halen songs always had cool introductions, and Eddie used harmonics in several of them in order to set the mood or evoke a certain feeling. In this guitar lesson we look at Women In Love, Top Jimmy and Girl Gone Bad. I hope you enjoy the video!
The intro to Women In Love is my favorite. But it doesn't last long enough. So when I was a kid I put the record on and would start the tape deck recording, then stop, move the needle back to the beginning and record again. I started and stopped at different intervals to make my own song out of the intro. I still have that cassette somewhere. lol I also did it with the intro to Drop Dead Legs.
That’s a cool story man! That’s one of the secrets to great song writing … leaving the listener wanting to hear a part again! Eddie did that so well. His intro’s are some of the best ever. 😎🤟🏻

Ahh, Summer Nights, forgot about that one. I remember being on the floor, front row watching Eddie play that on a Steinberger and trying to figure out what the heck he was doing.

Cool lesson! Those hand written tabs for the odd chords really come in handy for this one! Girl Gone Bad is such a great tune, a real tour de force all the way through. And at the end, the drums just die. Great ending. The Baretta Special is worth every penny!

Had no idea Top Jimmy was in D A D A C D. Always knew something was up though because couldnt think of any way to make those harmonics work in standard lol. Still he really made the most of that tuning in that song eh, usually alternate tunings box people in a little but not Eddie.
It's a really cool tuning. D dominant 7. Know what to do it with natural harmonics. But it makes playing the song hard lol. Eddie was very unique and experiential. That's why we love EVH. 😎🤟🏻

Marty…the last part you showed in Girl gone bad where you’re bouncing of the low E to the open A and trying to keep the rhythm going…that is insanely hard to keep time…been working on this song off and on for months and it’s killing me….nice job my man!!!
Thanks! I agree, that part is so weird and hard to pull off. The feel is really unique. I have struggled with it forever too. I hate doing these lessons sometimes because it’s really hard to replicate things like that and I don’t want to make the VH purists mad! Lol. 😎🤟🏻

Based on what Eddie said in the Steve Rosen interviews, I’m pretty confident Eddie used a Strat on women in love’s intro. No idea where he had the pickup selector set, but it sounds amazing regardless lol. Thanks for the lesson!

Yes, it is. It was $199 back when I got it. Only upgrade was I put a Mexican fender trem on it for about $30.

Top Jimmy is so cool….I have never seen Ed play it live,probably because of the tuning…Be kind of hard to tune the Floyd Rose to that,Lol..Cool fact,Ed used a Kramer Ripley guitar to record the intro..It was a stereo guitar…Great lesson!!
I'd like to add a 4th, 5th & 6th to this list: Pleasure Dome, Aftershock & Can't Get This Stuff No More. These intros are the highlights of all 3 songs for me.

I’m not impressed with celebrity, couldn’t care less. I have to say though, when I heard EVH passed my heart skipped a beat, it was a shocker for me.
Unlike guys like Rhoads, Holly or Hendrix, EVH had a good full run at it, but still, kinda gone too soon.
