  • Miss Éire (I am Ireland) is a 1912 Irish-language poem by Pádraig Pearse. In the poem, Pearse personifies Ireland as an old woman whose glory is past and who has been sold by her children. The title of the poem was used as a title for a 1959 documentary film by George Morrison, which dealt with key figures and events in Irish Nationalism between the 1890s and the 1910s, including Pearse himself.
    In 2016, the poem was translated to song for the score of the PBS documentary series 1916: An Irish Rebellion, curated by the Keough-Naughton Institute for Irish Studies at the University of Notre Dame. The song, also titled Mise Éire, was composed by Patrick Cassidy and performed by the RTÉ Concert Orchestra with vocals by Sibéal Ní Chasaide.

    For a brief moment my soul was connected with heaven. She has the voice of an angel. From the first note, instant tears. What more can I say?

    Crazy to think that the man who wrote that poem was executed in Ireland by order of an English General.
    Rest in peace Pádraic Pearse. Your father was English but you were more of an Irishman than most Irish with two Irish parents.

    Mise Éire:
    Sine mé ná an Chailleach* Bhéarra
    Mór mo ghlóir:
    Mé a rug Cú Chulainn cróga.
    Mór mo náir:
    Mo chlann féin a dhíol a máthair.
    Mór mo phian:
    Bithnaimhde do mo shíorchiapadh.
    Mór mo bhrón:
    D'éag an dream inar chuireas dóchas.
    Mise Éire:
    Uaigní mé ná an Chailleach* Bhéarra.
    I am Ireland:
    I am older than the old woman* of Beare.
    Great my glory:
    I who bore Cuchulainn, the brave.
    Great my shame:
    My own children who sold their mother.
    Great my pain:
    My irreconcilable enemy who harrasses me continually...
    Great my sorrow
    That crowd, in whom I placed my trust, died.
    I am Ireland:
    I am lonelier than the old woman* of Beare.

      I agree! Beautiful song! Just a few more year's and ALL Ireland will be free. If the the Loyalist's hate Irish culture , then they should not be here!

    Pearse was a fascist this song and poem needs to be retired to reflect modern Irelands character

    • @PaulusTarsus3574
      @PaulusTarsus3574 4 роки тому +7

      If Pearse was a facist, it was born of necessity. Until the island of Ireland attains freedom, the song and poem stays. Is mise Éire.🇮🇪 🥀

      @@PaulusTarsus3574 so you're saying Fascism is justified to save Ireland on its current trajectory toward the mess experienced by most other European countries?

    • @PaulusTarsus3574
      @PaulusTarsus3574 4 роки тому +4

      @@MindbodyMedic Of course not. You appear to be an alarmist. What I'm saying is that the words of this song were born from a deep seated hatred of injustice and oppression, and that in such cases, where an enemy illegally occupies a country, turning to facism, communism, atheism, extraterrestrialism, is justified to get them out. Paul of Tsarsus was a Christian-killer once, should we throw out his writings too? Or how about God? He wiped out the entire planet. Is that what youre saying? Get rid of God? After all, God is in the details. Troll.

      Ireland is occupied by American interests to the South and 'technically' occupied by British interests in the North. There's nothing alarmist about watching multinationals hollow out the soul of a nation via satisfying their appetite for massively expanded labour pool to maximise offshored profit. [btw my username is a well known phrase and shouldn't be taken as religious declaration].
