I wish this story by Larry could be redrawn by Michael Golden.

I have this story in an oversized collection. "A letter from Snake-Eyes" is Larry Hama's best story and the perfect ending for Marvel's G.I. joe series. RIP Ed.

GI JOe 109 was burned into my soul when I read it as a kid. I still remember the massacre. Powerful.

I loved the Hamma G.I. Joe run. It's a shame it's not easier to read today. It deserves the Marvel Epic Collection treatment. I know it's a rights thing though. But also kudos to Hamma for ending the run on a anti-war note.

I'm nearly 50 and still own and love this Marvel run. It was just fun comics. The Cobra Civil War, about 6 issues in the 70's, is so much fun. I'd recommend those issues, the silent Snake-Eyes stories and issue 53, as some of my favorites.

That Cobra Civil War was next level for the book, IMO. That issue with Baroness strapped to Serpenter's HISS... GOLD!!!

A story I've heard a few times explaining the garish late-era G.I. Joe character designs was that when the Playmates TMNT line came along and took a big bite out of Hasbro's market , they desperately emulated that cartoony, vibrant styling (with added action features) ina vain attempt to win back dominance.
Regarding the issue being discussed, as a dedicated childhood fan of the series it was one of the few I made a point of tracking down every month, that and Groo (something I suspect happened mainly due to close proximity on shop shelves). But by the time this finale came out I was entering my 20s and hadn't bothered with it in a while (due to the aforementioned late-era garishness). Yet, at the time I happened to wander into a local comic shop, saw it there in the weekly releases, and bought it out of sentimentality, no notion or indication it was hard to find at all. Its one of the few comic stories to really stick with me, but I give it and the rest of my G.I.Joe issues away a few yers later in a fit of house-cleaning. Ah well, hindsight.

Marvel's G.I.Joe is the only incarnation of the franchise I actually liked.

More GI Joe coverage please... It would be interesting to see some of the highlight issues covered, and hearing Jim read some of these for the first time...
also as of now this Wed 11-15-2023 Skybound is slated to release not only GI Joe 301 by Larry Hama, but also G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #1: Larry Hama Cut a reprint of GI Joe #1 which is solicited as "This issue restores Larry Hama’s original, unedited dialogue, which has never before seen print!"

I have so much nostalgia for G.I. Joe comics. It was the first series I started collecting (from #1). Picked them up from a 7-11 I could walk to as a kid before I’d ever encountered a comic shop. Had the toys. Watched the show. Was really into it, especially the stories that spoke to the relationship/history between Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow. I went off to college and returned to find that my parents had tossed out the box with my G.I. Joe comics. Not a happy memory. So glad to see you guys cover any of these issues. Tom’s recent video on issue #1 was great to see. Please continue to put this series under the microscope!

Very interesting to see this issue! I was looooong gone from my G.I. Joe days by the time that this came out, but I did hold on to the first 50 issues of that Marvel series for many years as I was once such a fan. There are 2 things that Larry Hama really rocked at ----- War books and Wolverine!!! Thanks, Gentlemen!!!

This is the one issue I missed back in the day.. Heard it was the final issue from my brother. Saw it at my local shop but was broke at the time. Went back later and it was gone. Still don't have it.

The Marvel Transformers run also finished pretty quickly (like GI Joe). Also the Archie Turtles which started off as a version of the cartoon.
So I think you’re right, there was the whole industry falling into a black hole - but also I think the audience just grew out of it, the comics morphed in their themes to keep some interest but those sales (and the print runs) just continued down.

Issue 301 from Image/Skybound comes out this week. Hama is still writing it. By the way, the kid who wrote the letter to Snake Eyes in this issue becomes the new Snake Eyes years later after the original dies. The OG did come back though
