We r completely brainwashed by these western thinking.... we r so rich in our cultures at micro level, there is jst a need to decode these secrets...thank you Nitin sir...blessed after seeing ur video...
There is no secret. Just take regular baths and go about your work day, so that you are upright and getting blood circulation. Keep your mind busy in work. But yes, take less stress than other days as one gets weaker on those days. E.g. you will not sing as well as you will on other days, and tire easily.
Am so glad I watched this video, thank you Nithin for doing this. I kinda always sensed that "Rest" must be the principal for these practices but it is so much more. Kudos to you for taking this initiative and of course Srijan Foundation as well !
Sinu's article a few years back got me interested in this...also your 5-6 part series on Menstruation on India Facts. I was a 'modernist' until I married and came to US, wherein I read Red Tent - about Old Jewish practices...which was about women following segregation during menses....native American women too had their own menstruation related practices...realized how deep our appreciation of female psyche is during this period! thank you watching/ listening as i type. Om!
it is practical to implement a few practices - i don't cook, husband does, i don't do pooja/ or visit temples or chant...i lie down and rest and watch videos like these...:) i try to sleep on floor but in winters i chickened out...of course no intercourse...i feel great after those 3-4 days...
I patiently sat through this whole talk, however I wasn't as convinced as I was with Sinu Joseph's TED Talks. As it is, I am an agnostic and do not participate in any Dharmic practices. So being on period does not come in my way anyway nor does it put me in a position to feel demeaned. This talk makes complete sense to those who already somewhere understand the notions behind menstrual practices of India. However, I believe this talk fails to convince the liberal mindset or the overall leftist mindset in women.

Very rich and profound research on how we originally thought about the now misunderstood practices. Wish more women would see this video and ask questions from their perspective . It is their narrative...
Glad to see people becoming more interested in vedas. The ones who are really interested will enventually come to the question of what aham bhamasmi , shivoham etc maha vakyas actually mean. Adavit vedanta saucha or Patanjali's saucha is= not mixed up - in the body all bhutas are mixed up so it can never be pure, -in the mind all kinds of thoughts and emotions mix and match thus it also can not be pure -But the atman or Brahman is the eternal witness consciousness which is the sakshi to all but never effected or changed by either physical or mental discomfort. And that 1 truth we are, I am. And that is the only truth. And this world is only brahman, we only percieve it as the world due to our identifications with the body mind complex ( i.e. the ego). Same for brahma hatya. How can something beyond body, beyond time be killed? but it may be applied in the level of the 'byaabharika' world, Truly knowing "that" one goes beyond these confusions about karma kanda of the vedas and understand that we only did these rituals in this life and for many births before to eventually learn that purity through outer means is impossible and the punya these actions give us may take us to higher realms (i.e the 7 swargas or heavens) with more means of sense enjoyment but after the punyas and papas burn out, back we go again to be born somewhere else and suffering and enjoying and again suffering. Again and again getting played by maya into running after material means and neglecting to inquire about the reality within. The only solution is to turn inward. Only one thing. People, no matter who, are never "asamartha" for "spiritual" practices. Manasik poojas, mental mantra japa , meditation are never contraindicated. In fact, these are encouraged during menstruation as , a person in whom apana vayu is more active, will naturally become contemplative due to increased flow of energy to the lower centers( increased activity) resulting in increased continuous natural activation and opening of the lower 2/3 chakras or energy centers which are mainly about trying to get happiness from modifying the world somehow. Unless one has had some sort of an awakening in life then, our energies are looping, in a very scattered way, between the lower chakras, which is to say, desire of attaining something and the fear of loosing something, unable to ascend into higher realms of consciousness which would give us more insight into the reality of our existence. The increased movement of energies there thus naturally makes the mind more meditative by opening them a little more then usual and helping to try and break this bondage, if we so wish. A very gross example is how people have epiphanies during going to the toilet. Hahaha! A woman or a man who meditates according to some sanpradaya or follows the vedas are shud-atmas and for them all rituals are allowed like how our female rishis of old were able to do yagnas, homas, wear yagnapabita and do continuous sadhanas for many years together without gap. For these people apana vayu only dose the job of bodily excretion and not the mental excretion( as nothing significant to excrete) which is the only hinderence to rituals for both men and women. . To make this happen is the reason that our compassionate ancestors gave different processes in our scriptures for realising ones ever pure devine self. They should be taken as sadhan=process/ ways to attain nitya shudha state . Not something to mindlessly do for fear of retribution or any physical harm, like in many other religions of the world. This is why people doing yoga, in the initial levels, may sometimes be told, depending on there disposition or the tradition they are part of, to concentrate on one or more of these centers. As the flow of energy increases to anywhere attention is being directed. Even in kundalini yoga or sri vidya there are many paths, to name a popular one the saundarya lahary by shankaracharya which is chanted regularly by women and men of many traditional households. In these paths it is possible to do spiritual sadhana without becoming sannyasi/ brahmachary and also while menstruating and having baby, by rearranging the placement of the elements on manipuraka and swadhisthana among other methods. My heartfelt gratitude to any one who has read this thing which, I realize now, has become quite long. Haha! Sorry. Namaskar!
So true actully we have polluted our minds with western thoughts that we r not ready to accept our ancestors words but the day this same thing will come from West we will start following with pride sad but true
Thanx for the video...I was also strong western approach towards these hindu practices for menstruation...but when my kundalini arises accidentally...then I come to know how great our hindu scriptures, rituals and d knowledge abt energies they hv...the whole science of westerners are far away from that wisdom....proud Hindu now 🙏Radhe Krishna
Excellent lecture! Thank you so much 🙏🏻💛 Yes, painful menstruation is NOT normal. It all comes down to what we put into our body (food, sounds, thoughts and even partner(s)). We need more mindful education, starting in kindergarten and schools. Hare Krishna 🙏🏻💛
If a person doesn't want to practice this, they should be respected. We should not force girls to follow. Girls must choose for themselves. But after knowing the reason, i presume that they might consider giving a try towards cultural practices. But again, Woman should decide for herself.
Thank u sir, for explaining in such detail, we in our fast life are forgoing our traditions which we have practised all our lives, the new generations when they question and we don't give them correct answers they don't want to follow traditions, I am going to share this with my daughters so that they can carry forward our Tradition respecting them, not thinking of them as backward and superstitious.
Very glad to know you found the talk useful. Please check this book by me which further elaborates on the topic- www.amazon.in/Sabarimala-Confusion-Menstruation-Historical-Perspective/dp/9386473461/
This video needs to be circulated today in 2019, when the stupid idiotic attack in Sabarimale has erupted and the SC judges have grossly erred in their decision, except for the 4th Lady Judge, who understood the Rationale behind the Tantra-Aagamic Practices of The Aiyappa Temple .
Thats not unfortunate, unless the girl has cramps. I used to feel much better at work. It would distract me, and the walking around helped my body clean up faster.
Excellent exposition of myths associated with menstruvation. The point is the knowledge should reach the children of marriageable age so that they will also be informed the information. Unfortunately the knowledge is passed on secretly from the mother to daughter and thus kept hidden making it a myth for men of similar group who will also require this knowledge when the deal with woman of same age. Thank you for the brilliant talk.
You have tried to bring in the deeper concepts on this matter in a nice way. I could like to add a few more reasons for a few sanctions if they can be called so during those days for many practical reasons as well. A large percentage of women experience different types of physical discomfort and tiredness and resting from daily mundane tasks would be welcome for most. As dominant/selfish people in the house may not allow the woman some rest, hence it was imposed as a practice. Moresoover in those early ages, woman had to do strenuous back-breaking tasks like fetching water from long distances, pounding, grinding etc., and if forced to do, it may cause added mental stress and anxiety. As already told the whole process is itself uncomfortable for the woman most of the time, and if her partner demands sexual favors, the act may be painful for the woman, hence in the name of restrictions, men are kept away from the woman.
I am reading and watching all these views on menstrual practices and I feel are we so so satyug types that energy has much impact ?? So now we have self proclaimed Gurus in Gujrat who say menstruating women if cooks food, she will becomes dog and govt say we need to stop them for saying this and other side we have English speaking people who talk about Asaucha and all.. Guruma from art of living doesn't believe this all untouchability etc and it gives me immense satisfaction.
Once we understand the ultimate truth that Humans are one of the million life forms that live today/ gone into extinction in past, we realise the stupidity of all religious practices ( Hindu, Christian, Islam,,Jew etc etc). When these texts were written, our understanding of nature was very limited and thus we assumed that we are a special life form - which is not. The kundalini stuff he mentions won't even exist had we not evolved into bipedal beings... All these ancient texts were great at the time of their creation. Now we have a better understanding of nature through science. We have better social qualities like equality obtained through practicing democracy...Our ultimate aim should be to understand things through scientific methodology while ensuring equality between all kinds of people/ gender/ sex
Thank you so much for this talk, you’ve cleared all my doubts on menstruation practices in Hinduism, every teenager should watch this video for a better living 👍
All these dislikers are not believe in santana dharma it's not a religion it's process of guidance how to maintain your life with a peaceful journey so please don't be put poision in your mind just follow the Vedic rituals which will lift our society in a dignity manner not take it as the western world mind like they always have give and take mind or interest oriented concept but we are different from them as we believe in sacrifices just like eg a women is the form goddess ,sister ,mother, wife so be faith in your mother land jai Bharat
Currently doing my EE on religion perception on menstruation and this really help a lot! Though, I have a lil' question to ask, since you said how women were refrain from performing religious acts, is it like all or is it like certain. For Muslim for instance, we are prohibited from performing the Salah, fast and Hajj but there are some religious acts such as reciting the Quran from memory and zikr is allowed. So its not like all religious activities. Thank you :D
We chant mantras so which the downward chakra is activated during menstrual in female, mantras are upward lifting frequencies so it causes imbalance,so we are not allowed same for men if they are injured they are not allowed to do these practices!!!
Sir, I just want to ask Since the earth and the tree, like woman, took 1/3 rd of the guilt of Indra so what is the time when we have to remain away from the earth and the tree since they should also emit those rays of guilt like woman do during those times?
That's the reason the sap of the trees should not be used to eat or use in spiritual practices such as eraser etc. On the day of ambuvachi, I don't yet have any answers
Saying that irrespective of the intent of the person, the person cooking food is transmitting negative energy into the food being cooked by her just because she is menstruating is "____________". Please fill that blank for yourself. I am short of words to complete that sentence. Curbing the liberties of a person in the name of practices for her own good is ridiculous. Grow up people.
What is happening with all these videos I feel is old wine in new bottle, so follow all traditional rituals but give justification for each and flip it saying it is not impure but pure and it is for women s best .. though still woman has to follow same traditions she feels empowered as direction of perception is changed!!
I still don't understand the harmful effect of bathing during menstruation as it cleans the body and if a girl takes bath before eating it should help in increasing the digestive fire.
I got the answer for this. Bathing increases vat dosha in our body. During nenstruation vaat is already aggravated and we should not do anything to increase it further. I tried not taking full body bath on first and second day and my pain was very less. Also my energy level was a little higher than usual. I think we need to read books ourselves to know everything. 😊
Pouring water over the head i.e washing hair would effect the pitta dosha which is also important during mensturation. That's why that is not recommended. I have experienced showering during my first two days gives me pain soon after and now I don't do that.
I do not want any more men to talk about menstruation please. I always find more MEN speaking on menstruation instead of women. These people twist things without realizing or experiencing anything. Men do not bleed. They just translate Sanskrit texts based on their mindset and beliefs. It is frustrating and infuriating. He still does not do justice to menstruation. If really women were prohibited from bathing and combing during periods then in our villages, our grandmothers would not have made us immediately take a bath and wash the head as soon as we got periods. She would also make sure we took a bath as soon as we woke up in the morning especially while menstruating. We are also asked to bath using haldi and apply kajal (basically beautify ourselves during periods).
About 37 minutes in to the video, speaker is saying that rape victim can feel cleansed after rape. What if somebody is raped on the day they were most fertile by somebody not her husband, wouldnt she become pregnant and start process of conceiving a being?
@@sureshpaul2579 Even with subjectivity it will likely be a moot point. Here are some questions to ponder over. What if parents will not raise the child? What if parents dont have money to ensure proper upbringing of child? What if parents are not in right mental state of mind? 2000 years back Kotliya laid rules of punishment for crimes. Sometimes i feel they can be applicabel today also.
If the mother is not able to raise the son born out of rape financially, he will be given education by the king's college and considered as Kshatriya caste. If that is a women, women teachers takes care of them. Yep, there are women professors and teachers in the old India.
All the meaning of the system has changed long ago.. mensuration function was performed to inform Public that the girl is ready for marriage during 1800 i guess..
Upnayan sanskar is still done for both and guys in many parts and in many areas where it is not done for both during marriage upanayam for husband is increased by 3 threads giving him upnayan of wife as well.
The bathing rule is modified by people in villages where they say a mensturating women shouldn't wash hair. Why is this? Because the women's pitta dosha is in play more and pouring water (which has cooling properties) affects pitta. In have experienced this. I think it also effects the vata dosha aswell. When I am on period the first two days I try and stick to this as it gives me pain.
Not a feminist, woke, progressive or any of that good stuff. Having said that, this is a huge exaggeration of human physiology, not scientifically convincing at all. Also, women have been doing all the ‘restricted’ activities for years, without any significant resultant ailments. And pain is normal during periods due to release of prostaglandins, though women experience different intensities of pain, and have been experiencing even before the current lifestyle practices. Exercise, in fact, helps alleviate the pain.
Pain is not normal during periods. Exercise puts more stress on the body when already the body is in oxidative stress. The body is in oxidative stress during this time is proven in western science. Also by experience and friends experience I know it gives pain. Perhaps light walk or specific yoga asana would help of there is pain.
I don't understand why men feel the need to explain menstruation to women. Surely a womans lived experience has more relevance than some texts ..again primarily written by men.
Western Garbage infiltrating Indian values. All men must know about mensuration, there should be no secret. It is good that we have a man discussing this. It is by no means secret woman's business.
yes, but after centuries of abrahamic oppression of Hindus & lies spread by them, it will take a longer time to do that... you see, first the people have to be dug out ofthe hole, & only then they can be shown the ladder that they can climb up.

Please give a link to the slides. We appreciate the talk and the references.
Drinking sufficient warm water, having light food ensures no or less pain.
Thank you so much to give us such a wonderful knowledge 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Such a great talk. Thank you. Why nobody teaches such things in our schools?
I ask my mom sooo many time... Why I am not allowed to do pooja... But didn't answer me... She didn't have any....i think she never asked her mom.....
Sir, I just want to ask
Since the earth and the tree, like woman, took 1/3 rd of the guilt of Indra so what is the time when we have to remain away from the earth and the tree since they should also emit those rays of guilt like woman do during those times?
That's the reason the sap of the trees should not be used to eat or use in spiritual practices such as eraser etc.
On the day of ambuvachi, I don't yet have any answers

Saying that irrespective of the intent of the person, the person cooking food is transmitting negative energy into the food being cooked by her just because she is menstruating is "____________". Please fill that blank for yourself. I am short of words to complete that sentence. Curbing the liberties of a person in the name of practices for her own good is ridiculous. Grow up people.
Duffer please widen ur mind.
@@khushiparmar1843 if accepting this BS is widening my mind I am better off with my narrow mind. And yes I did ignore your calling me a duffer.
Unfortunately people who grew up on superstitions (and afraid of West) will never grew up or do it too late.

WHY WOMAN BETWEEN 10 TO 50
SHOULD NOT VISIT SABARIMALA - THIS IS THE ANSWER
Women and Sabarimala authored by Sinu Joseph, a lady who does great work in menstruation also is worth listening to.
What is happening with all these videos I feel is old wine in new bottle, so follow all traditional rituals but give justification for each and flip it saying it is not impure but pure and it is for women s best .. though still woman has to follow same traditions she feels empowered as direction of perception is changed!!
Very well exposed the "Red-Tent Movement"...
🙏🙏🙏Right explanation
Very well explained. best vedio
Everyone who watches it must also watch Sinu joseph videos about Menstrual Pratices in Bhaarat.
I still don't understand the harmful effect of bathing during menstruation as it cleans the body and if a girl takes bath before eating it should help in increasing the digestive fire.
there is no logic ...its just a bunch of pseudo-science glorified because it was written in our scriptures...
There is a long answer u can ask an ayurved expert they'll tell u
I got the answer for this. Bathing increases vat dosha in our body. During nenstruation vaat is already aggravated and we should not do anything to increase it further. I tried not taking full body bath on first and second day and my pain was very less. Also my energy level was a little higher than usual. I think we need to read books ourselves to know everything. 😊
@@bkggera and also one of my female frnds noticed that flow stops for sometime after bathing
Then she will be cleansed after the birth of the child.
Child should not suffer for the parents mistakes. So abortion is not dharmic

Very informative
Thank you, very helpful
Upnayan sanskar is still done for both and guys in many parts and in many areas where it is not done for both during marriage upanayam for husband is increased by 3 threads giving him upnayan of wife as well.
It is not women life it is the creation of human beings

We lack energy now
Without bathing and combing there is no hygiene right how can woman stay like that
The bathing rule is modified by people in villages where they say a mensturating women shouldn't wash hair.

Pain is never normal during periods my dear ever.
Pain is not normal during periods. Exercise puts more stress on the body when already the body is in oxidative stress. The body is in oxidative stress during this time is proven in western science. Also by experience and friends experience I know it gives pain. Perhaps light walk or specific yoga asana would help of there is pain.

It can be attained over long cycles of time
Same question I have is when does one reincarnate if he is in seed form (sperm) in his father, grandfather all the way back to the first forefather

I don't understand why men feel the need to explain menstruation to women. Surely a womans lived experience has more relevance than some texts ..again primarily written by men.

yes, but after centuries of abrahamic oppression of Hindus & lies spread by them, it will take a longer time to do that... you see, first the people have to be dug out ofthe hole, & only then they can be shown the ladder that they can climb up.
