Is Operation Ivy the best ska-punk band ever?

- Operation Ivy, born in '87, straight outta Berkeley, California, was the heartbeat of Lookout Records, unleashing the fierce "East Bay Sound."
Their name? Inspired by those nuclear tests in '52. They dropped just one full album, "Energy," and then called it quits in '89. But man, their legacy? Still fuels Rancid today. They molded the ska wave's soul and left their mark on countless other bands.

I wish I could give this a million likes or thumbs up! Between Operation Ivy, Common Rider, and Rancid, you have what's still in HEAVY ROTATION for me to this day. Great stuff!
About 1995 or 96 I was working at a little caesars and wanted to listen to my Op Ivy tape. Ill never forget this older dude I worked with (probably 25ish but may as well have been 90 to me) said "let me see that" read the track listing and said "soundsystem, unity, these look like hip hop song titles." And he let me play it. He loved it. I was always a hip hop head, but also very into the punk scene. Felt good to introduce him to something I loved and have him react positively to it. Its a cherished memory that makes me smile still all these years later. I also got laid for the first time because of that tape.
Going to need the rest of the story mate
At the time, 1992 I think, I was 99% thrash and death metal but I met some friends who were skaters and had Op Ivy playing a lot and I instantly loved it. I still listen, over and over and over.
Yes.
Operation Ivy was the Soundtrack of my youth. Sarted listening to punk because of them!
Frickin' great one, Tome! I grew up with this band. Brought a tear to my eye.
Impressive all the footage from the 80!
I discovered O.I. in middle school during the early 2000s. Never had I ever related to a group like I did them.
I started a ska band that year and named it Ivy League.
I’m so thankful to these guys for giving me the first album I could call home.
I still listen to "Energy" all the way through now and then 30+ years after I first heard it as a teenager growing up in England.
It is the American equivalent of "Nevermind the Bollocks" in importance & influence.
What an inspiration! Listened to NRG first time I learned to drop in on a mini ramp-
best video so far ! keep it up Tome!
dude, they came up with a sound in the late 80's that every other band that plays this style has been chasing and can never get it right like they did.
At the 3:00 mark and during Sleep Long... the guy in the stripped shirt singing is Paul Curran. He was a long time editor at Maximumrockandroll. His brother, Jack Curran, was in !Fiffteen! I was fortunate to see about 12-15 of their shows and Jello was correct...it has stayed with me. Oh... I see they get a quote from Paul later.
Forever amazing
Fuck yeah
Op Ivy Forever
This band is how it all started for me. I know every word to the whole album
12:00 well said.
Whenever anyone asks: "Why did Operation Ivy break up?"....always retire when you're on top.
David Mello still plays... He's in still in Jewdriver and 80's Knight is his latest group.
Op Ivy.....they were fantastic.....nuff said.....
Operation Ivy literally changed my life as a teen not only through Jesses lyrics which opened my perspective to the broader world and politics but also through the music and its enthusiasm and energy
tome who made the beat at 1:30 . If it was you, very good.
Operation Ivy is absolutely the best ska punk band of all time and it’s not even close.
the "hectic" ep literally made me start my own ska punk band. (we broke up :( )
Yes
Operation Ivy is by far the best EVER!
YES. The answer is most definitely a yes.
Best thing they did 2 years.
They playing in a different key live vs. studio?
I edited the speed of the video to suit the studio song and it ended up like that.
Wherever Peasant Shayne’s at , is where the best ska punks at
Op.Ivy unquestionably the best....
Could have swarn they played Artesia hi 1997
I know Tim sings in Rancid, but Lars takes the attention like Jesse used to
"Green Day has performed Knowledge live 758 times" yet no acknowledgement that it is on their debut album 1039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours...
I remember one of my friends in 5th grade (probably around '93) wearing an Operation Ivy shirt. This was about the time I was getting into rock. I had no idea what they were. It wouldn't be for another several years that I would realize the connection they had to all of my favorite bands, since Green Day was the first band I got into. "Time Bomb" would be out another year or so after that. I was getting all of the bands that Op Ivy had influenced without knowing a damn thing about them for far too long.
This would have been better with some Tome narration!
We're drowning lol
Yes. Not counting sublime since they are their own genre.
The Specials, The Selector and Madness (arguably) were better ska-punk bands. I say arguably for Madness since they were a few steps further away from the punk energy. Maybe ska-new-wave.
How tf can you leave Schlong out of Dave's main bands?
Yah lint
Had to ruin it by showing Billie Joe 🤣
😅
Is the bear a Catholic?
citizen fish
In the shops and supermarket chains
The checkouts play that song again
The notes ring in, ring out the change
Laughing all the way to the stock exchange
