My GF convinced me to actually get into the hobby instead of just watching videos about it. We bought our first models together, but I went apeshit and she collected at the pace she paints. I ended up grinding hudreds of hours to get my green tide, while she's still perfectly happy with her 20 some odd wraith guards/blades
I tried with my wife for over a year, she just has no interest in tiny fiddly details or artistic bent whatsoever. She’s perfectly happy playing Dead by Daylight whilst I paint or throw dice lol.
Mine basically took over the game, I have no idea how to break through her imperial guard Lines, for the past 3 months she has figured out dozens of ways to turn my beautiful knights into mountains of molten slag No matter what I try. I finally decided to make an apocalypse to tier game with 10,000 points so I could bring in my titans...... Turns out bane blades are fucking great at killing titans.
A female commander of the guards is a truly terrifying thing. They will not sacrifice their pawns, but will blow their enemies into the nth dimension to keep their soldiers safe.
Why is it always orks or tyranids? I swear every time I introduce my girlfriend or sister, or hear someone else introduce their gf/wife/ female family member, they find orks and nids cute. ...why?
I just bought Nids because they were cheep and fucking adorable. I'm going to be using every Ripper Swarm unit I get to build a tsunami of Rippers on one base just drenched in blood and bits left over from other armies. It's going to be so cute!
My wife played a game of 40k (and AOS!) with me at various points. She now owns her own Ad Mech army for 40k and a Hedonites of Slannesh army for AOS. She prefers the hobby aspect but we play regular "couples" games with other local nerd couples for great 2v2's.
My girlfriend started with Kill Team(which she loves), and we haven't moved up to 40k itself yet. We started incrementally there as well, working our way up by playing first without cover, then without equipment, and it was a great refresher for me as well with the new Kill Team rules. Looking to do the same for 40k once she has more of her Orcs built! Great video, looking forward to hearing more and subscribing for sure!
Thank you so much for the kind words! This video did unexpectedly well considering we're still super new to UA-cam. If anyone has suggestions to improve the format please don't be shy. We're really hoping this channel grows.
I made my gf to play Necromunda. She is not that interested in modeling compartment but damn she loves to make stories of her gangers and enjoys funny shenanigans that dice rolls bring to the table. Notable highlight of her two gangs: Van Saar champion Babushka with plasma cannon and heavy amount of augmentations to have BS (-1)+ on a good day and BS 2+ on a bad day. Infiltrating Corpse Grinder Cult juve with huge lascannon while only wearing latex speedos.
It’s interesting seeing all this from a new starter perspective again. The wound table in particular I remember thinking it’d take me forever to get this down. Now I just know it. Good story, guys ❤️
This is much the same way I have been teaching people fantasy. (Never played 40k) I run warhammer days, where me and one or two mates takes an army with us, some random gray and primed units and paints. And just get kids (and adults) into it. Perfect way to get your gray pile of shame taken care of. Game wise I would run it much like the introduction paper in "battle for skull pass" gave it, few units very simple exercises, and then a small short game just to get a feel for it. This allowed many people to try it out, and at the end we could do one "bigger" fight to show other stuff off. I always found it fun to take out a wyvern or Azhag when they been seeing mostly rank and file gobbo's and orcs fro me. This was also how I got my GF into it, though she never got the charm of the Orcs, she was more into dark elves, and mutation from chaos. Got a day planned for early December on the local library, and I hope my GF and a few mates can make it. Would make it much easier to run a painting table or two as well as a few games.
My wife dosnt play but I paint and build while she works on her scrapbooking and crafting in the same room. This is of course after all 4 kids are in bed, we have a busy house lol
It's very interesting how many of the weird rules we don't have to worry about trying to remember after a bit since it just ends up as muscle memory. Definitely had that experience myself when trying to teach new people the game. It allllllll comes rushing back. Great video!
I think there's probably an episode about getting new players into the game and gently introducing mechanics that could be made. Brad talked about accidentally doing some big brain moves with bracketing and whatnot, and even though it was accidental, I think he hit on something. If a friend/family member/etc wanted to learn how to play with you, and was okay with you putting together an army for them, there's gotta be some tricks you can pull to help them learn the game in the list building step.
One of the things I love about my wife is that she makes me think of things differently. There's something about 40k information being processed by a female perspective that enriches the hobby for me. I think the sexes are more alike than they are different, but there are subtle variations. And there's a lot of very interesting things to be learned in that space.
My spouse 10 years ago: "here's this really cool lore. I like the memes and tertiary content. It's also a game, but the lore is really cool!" My spouse now, after I said I want to play: "wait, HOW much did you spend on codexes? Can you help me build a list? Look at all the options this Raptor kit comes with! Oooo, this seller makes female space marine heads!"
we had to do this on a few episodes because we got copyright claims on our normal (UA-cam) outro track. Nothing on this site is safe from fake copyright claims.

"Data sheets could use a lot of work" GW: "Write that down!" lol, seeing this vid just as 10th is rounding the corner and they are changing Data sheets to be easier to read
pretty much did the same thing with my brother recently, just started with 3 or 4 units and did a basic game to learn the combat basics and stats. the next game i showed him how command points and rerolls/overwatch worked.
^This. It gets you playing the basics of how a wargame functions, without the mind-bending layers of complexity. (Plus, I think it's just a tighter, more elegant system in general. And makes design decisions Warhammer should have made long ago, like alternating activations. Even the skirmish versions of Warhammer are doing that now, but 40K and AoS stubbornly refuse to change.)
And this is why from now on, if I'm introducing somebody to casual play, who I know will never be interested enough to play in store or tournaments... they'll be playing OPR
I'm afraid that's not us. We do the Poorhammer Podcast (this) and Solely Singleton (a Magic the Gathering podcast about the Cube format mostly.) Both of those are on Spotify. I'll have to check this other podcast out if they sound like us though.
I tried to get my sister to pain some minis (she barely play video games, she WOULD never understand a warhammer game, nor she cares much for fantasy or sci-fi stuff) she said it is relaxing BUT annoying and too time consuming, this game is just a RTS but IRL, and shows something about warhammer, is too fucking complicated, too much rules that are irrelevant, and WAYYYY too much jargon, of 10th edition release, it would be nice to simplify a bit, and isn't 40k player base getting smaller by year? (Only boomer play this thing anyways, no offense, just the average age of tabletop player isn't exactly youngsters or kids

It's because Orks are the cutest and it's not even close.

I taught my gf 40k too, space marine vs necron
She won

Well done her.
I actually would love to see her notebooks.
Also, I wonder how she'd find the Battlefleet Gothic videogames.

try putting bluetac on your hormagaunt bases, it weighs them down and makes them stick to the floor a little bit.

Tabletop games are actually growing, but 40k specifically are getting smaller because of pricing and good competition.
tbh now we have Tabletop Simulator, its a amazing way to get into the hobby and not spend a 1000 bucks on it
