This clip is from QI Series P, Episode 3, 'Piecemeal' with Sandi Toksvig, Alan Davies, Gyles Brandreth, Jimmy Carr and Sally Phillips.
The difference between Gyles and other people who don't know when to shut up, is that Gyles is genuinely interesting and entertaining and can laugh at himself.
Precisely.
It's not that he doesn't know when to shut up. He knows not to shut up.
I actually love his anecdotes.
Learn a lot from them, and they're entertaining.
Thank you. Those who moan at Gyles never understand this
Also worth noting is where Jimmy Carr can both dish it out and take it in stride.
I think I speak for everyone when I say you should upload a full version.
I saw this episode and Mr Gyle Brandreth is at it for the whole show!
I thought he was very interesting and very, very funny. The reactions from the other guests was equally funny. A must watch episode!
@@1969Kismet He always does that. Was even able to shut Stephen Fry up for great chunks of time which is quite a feat in itself.
It's from S16E03, go ahead and search
@@romulusnr I'm assuming the anecdote is still edited down to the above clip.
@@RubyDoobieScoo nope :p
"He was subsequently arrested but that's a different story." 🤣
I love Gyles' anecdotes. I find him really interesting.
SJ Cox
Quite!
@All Flatards Are My Bitches just found it. 'Something Rhymes With Purple.' Cheers, will check it out 👍
Agreed. He is that rarest of things, a conservative I like who can be both funny and interesting. I genuinely look forward to his ramblings 😊
Although he passed this off in a jokey way, if you’ve read his autobiography you’d know the different story is actually no laughing matter... 😬
@@rcnhsuailsnyfiue2 Care to give an abridged version?
Gyles Brandreth, the great storyteller, and Sally Phillips, his lone attentive listener.
Her and all of us, of course.
His responses to rudeness plaster a smile across my face, even in joke, his ethic of thought just forces me to say aloud, even if I am alone: "Charming".
@Joseph Norm What's stopping you? Round up some like-minded people and go do it, if that's what you want.
This is the man who holds the world record for longest after-dinner speech - twelve hours and thirty minutes, so probably also counts as the longest after-breakfast speech too.
And I bet every minute was funny and interesting
Sally genuinely interested in someone's story is just so refreshing for some reason. She seems like a very nice person to hang out with.
Everytime I see her I wish I was a water bottle
Giles is a master of comedic timing, delivery and misdirection. His stories always take the most bizarre and hilarious left turns into insanity.
Brandreth plays with his perceived character so well.
His, "Okay; you live and learn...", at 1:58, was brilliant. Smoothly self-aware.
I just caught that and it was a brilliant little moment. Hoping to find another comment about it and did.
NOOOO, they left out the best part. When Gyles talks about having eating "human".
it is one of my favourite moments of all of QI "I once ate a human" and all of a sudden for a split second, its as quiet as a crypt :D
For anybody interested this clip (and the one Im referencing are in episode "Piecemeal". Enjoy!
That sounds amazing, I'm going to watch that right now. For anyone reading, it's series P, episode 3.
The way Gyles delivers that revelation is one of my favourite moments as well! Here it is for anyone interested:
ua-cam.com/video/ldl0ny0EeXE/v-deo.html
"But the important thing was I had an onion tied to my belt"
Which was the style at the time
Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days nickels had pictures of bumblebees on em. “Gimme five bees for a quarter,” you’d say!
I see some of us think alike... XD
"They didn't have white onions...because of the war!"
(Whole story here, and more: ua-cam.com/video/Yu9ShccG_SU/v-deo.html)
New heel for your shoe?
I have just laughed to myself for about 5 minutes 😂😂
He's a quieter version of Brian Blessed
That is not too difficult
I was just thinking that they need both of them on the same show.
@Emily Barclay I refuse to live in a world where anything about Brian Blessed is "neutral"
Someone needs to write a flat-share sitcom with Brandreth and Blessed where they pretty much play themselves. I'd watch the fuck out of that.
Giles B and Brian Blessed two of the most annoying people on british tv. They love the sound of their own voices
"But I'm cutting to the chase, because I don't want to take up too much of your time!"
I love self effacing humour!
"I know there are bonus points for courtesy"
I've never heard a more British statement 😂
I’m going to adapt this anecdote for the stage.
For use when you give your Twanky?
OK 👌 I'm going to go and make a cup of tea.
@@samdavy2214 Twankay, I trust.
You f---ing better
...in 43 Acts?
Can we get the unabridged version please?
I think YT has a 12 hour limit on the length of videos.
“It’s one of those kinky parties” 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
They should do an April Fools' episode where Sandi asks the first question and the response is 30 minutes (45 for the XL version, of course) of one of Gyles' anecdotes
Best is in a latter episode where after a Giles anecdote Sandi reveals her script directs her to see if Giles can be persuaded to reminisce.
I could listen to Gyles' Never Ending Anecdotes all day long.
And Gyles Brandreth was then speaking as the whistle went, gained an extra point for doing so and is now in the lead!
Nice cross reference 😊
A fair few deviations, I would say, and a couple of repetitions, though certainly no hesitation.
"Do not ask him any supplementary questions."
hes one of those people who can just tell stories about everything and you just get lost in his little world
I love Gyles .. he’s just fascinating to listen to!
Aren't all Gyles' anecdotes never ending?
I'm debating looking him up in Hansard just to see if he managed to talk for a whole parliamentary session without pausing.
@@TheHutchy01 and also without any deviation or repetition.
They certainly feel that way. Worst recurring guest on the show. I skip any episode he’s in.
@@gormster At last! Someone who shares my opinion on this twit - and I'm changing a letter there to be polite. My god, his ego is suffocating. "Oh I'm soh pawsh" - no mate, you're not. He's a new-money Tory who got lucky.
You can only provide one neverending anecdote.
This is maybe the third time I have seen him on QI and I really don't have a good idea who he is but I find him hilarious, from the US.
He’s an ex Conservative politician, but also appeared on lots of panel shows in the 80s. He was known for his colorful knitted jumpers which viewers used to send in.
He used to bore me to tears, but I don’t mind him these days
@@carpii he's also on radio 4 a lot
Gyles you are blooming brilliant!
Gyles Brandreth is a delight - amusing and interesting.
I expected a longer video.
The original broadcast was indeed much, MUCH longer...
Is it because once you get them started they never shut up?
Women comedians?
Long live Jack Dee!
@Clippy, nah. He's got no beard!
Gyles Brandreth, Sandi toksvig and Sally Phillips around a table. That's my perfect quiz night.
This reminds me of the time I caught the ferry over to Shelbyville. I needed a new heel for my shoe, so, I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on 'em. "Give me five bees for a quarter," you'd say. Now where were we? Oh yeah - the important thing was that I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time. They didn't have white onions because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones...
Give Gyles his own show where he can just talk about his life experiences, I'd watch that! Or maybe a podcast, then you can do other stuff at the same time, I guess.
He does a podcast with Susie Dent (of Countdown) called "Something Rhymes with Purple". Just do a quick search for it.
I'm amazed how much I love this man even though our political views are very much unalike.
He's one of those rare politicians who actually achieved something.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marriage_Act_1994
That’s good. I think more people should learn to separate politics from personal life and entertainment. There are many people I love and enjoy watching even though I completely disagree with them.
@@imikal8046 , I think it depends on how your politics differ.
I am a queer (trans, bi) and disabled US American.
A lot of Conservative / Republican US Americans think I don't deserve to live.
I can't really be friends with people who think I am an unnatural abomination or a parasite on society.
I know I'm not the only person who clicked this thinking "which one?"
You are correct 😊😂
I could listen to Giles all day long.
Doesn't it rather defy the point to edit this one for brevity? Reminds me of the time I was asked to edit a friend's screenplay (he was later arrested, but that's a different story...)
When it came to the Neverending Story, I was quite happy to find that I'd gotten the version that had been edited to end.
I'll never not get tired of Gyles' initial reaction to Jimmy's comment & his later response...in fact I'll never tire of Gyles
Gyles is a national treasure. What a story teller he is.
"I haven't seen this blatant false advertising since my lawsuit against the never ending story".
I've argued in front of every judge in this state. Often as a lawyer.
I love how rudely polite he is to Jimmy.
I could gladly listen to Gyles read an audio book of his anecdotes
That's an excellent idea. He has a book of theatre quotes but not of his own anecdotes. I would buy it.
Gyles is also a very talented author. I recently read his novel. Jack The Ripper, Case Solved. . its an outstanding piece of fiction.
I think Gyles Brandreth is ace! I've always liked him since I was a kid when he used to appear on TV-AM from time to time. Good health to him!
Gyles is absolutely fantastic. A truly delicious raconteur!! What a broad, unexpected knowledge base!!! Love him.
Great raconteur's are rare now. Gyles is a national treasure.
"It put me off equality forever" hahaha
I love Gyles I could listen to him all day.. And that is probably how long it takes to hear him out
It must be lovely to have such intelligent and well-educated teachers. Such a shame the private schools snap them all up.
They'd be eaten alive by public schools lol
He's one of the best guest imo. I love him
I find Gyles incredibly interesting and witty and always have done throughout his career...on HIGNFY he is just in his own class
Gyles lead such an interesting life. He experienced so much
I'm American but love British panel shows along with British TV as a whole. The only way I can get some shows is via UA-cam *ahem* unauthorized uploads. But Gyles quickly became one of my favorites even though I have no clue who he is nothing but loved whenever I run across him. Such a gem for a whole nation and more!
“This put me of equality forever” perfect
If I could love Gyles more it would be illegal. The perfect mixture of deep intellect and wit in delivery. 🥰
Bless your heart @Grace Padilla
Always loved Jimmy's laugh!
I shared an office with a bloke with an "inward" laugh like Jimmy's and a girl who snorted and "hooped" between laughs. When they set each other off it was like working on a donkey farm lol
Best clip to date
I would love to have heard significantly more. I was enthralled
If I ever meet Gyles, I will listen to his stories for as long as he will allow me and I will enjoy every second.
I love him.
“Many years ago...”
I can't imagine having a better dinner party guest.
Why did they edit out the middle of the story? The cut out the best bit of when he had an onion on his belt.
What a character!
I genuinely think he might be the world’s most interesting man.
He's up there, but you can't honestly forget about Bob Mortimer!
I was thinking Bob for normal things viewed through the eyes of an absolute lunatic, and Brian Blessed for extraordinary things straight out of a boys own adventure book that he thinks are perfectly normal 🤣
Oh dear, how parochial you are. You really should broaden your horizons!
@@luuketaylor
I could, in an instant! (Whoever he is. As I've never heard of him, so I've already done so.)
@@DanDownunda8888 rude.
Can we have a compilation of these types of anecdotes?
My favourite little thing about this is the impressed look on Jimmy's face at Gyles' quick thinking of that orgy party joke.
We love Gyles 😂😂
QI XL Series R episode 7 has some new and great Gyles moments for those interested to watch him some more
I love Gyles Brandreth. He is hugely knowledgeable, has an excellent memory, and is very funny. He would be right at the top of my list of who I would love to invite to a friendly meal. Greg Davis and Rob Brydon too.
Love Gyles
I'm sure many have requested this: please do 'Gyles Brandreth's Anecdotes.' I've no doubt he has enough to make two videos. Series P Episode 3 and recently Series S Episode 4 were pack with Quite Interesting stories.
Running through my panel show memory bank now...didn't Jack Whitehall once paint a portrait of Gyles Brandreth's cat, as told on "Would I Lie To You?"
Yes he did and didn't he present it on that episode of WILTY?
@@architectofechoes4 Yes! They did have it on the show, and showed the painting side-by-side with a photo of the cat.
Giles is a national treasure!
I love him. So funny.
Full version please
There are two kinds of people in this world : the ones who are desperately yearning for him to shut up and the ones who could listen to him for ever
I was briefly attached to a Roman anti-trouser brigade during Caesar's reign and to this day cannot tolerate people who wear them. It's the toga or nothing!
I sincerely hope I have stories like this to tell when I'm 70...
Education is a wonderful thing 🙂
He's a good sport isn't he?
This day shall forever be known as "The day Jimmy Carr tried to steal the thunder from that old fart who did Dictionary Corner on Countdown and failed."
Jimmy Carr was so out of his depth and you could almost hear his brain ticking over frantically thinking "How do I get a laugh?" Gyles, the master racentaur was outclassing him at every turn.
I'd love him to narrate his own autobiography.#audiobook
american here, sry, but i absolutely LOVE that old guy!
How extraordinary. It is as if one stumbled on to a chautaugua speaker.
It took quite a long time, but I’m starting to like Giles.
I used to think Gyles was insufferable then I just learnt to laugh at him now I think he’s funny as fuck
Yeah I adore him. He does waffle on but he's got a great way with words and good anecdotes are very interesting.
Legend.
I need to invite Gyles to my next dinner party. I could talk to him all night. He would learn something
He fucking roasted Jimmy and that doesn't happen very often
I love Gyles!
so proud he is the chancellor of my uni Giles is a legend wonder if i can set off a ramble as he hands me my degree.
That laugh though
Sally is beautiful
And 50!
Aha, well played! It's like tennis, honestly.
Gyles is the best.
I have finally found someone on my level of insanity. Me and Gyles would be best friends
i love sally's top. where is it from?
"...now, who here likes a good story about a bridge?"
The Gyles and Stephen Fry show please.
Gyles with the claps back.
One day we'll wish we'd listened.
This is what a private British education does people. Absolutely brilliant isn't it?
