Tamil Nadu minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, son of CM M.K. Stalin and grandson of late DMK patriarch M. Karunanidhi, has ruffled quite a few feathers with his comment about ‘Sanatana Dharma’ - he likened it to diseases, and said it was something to be destroyed not opposed. But atheism can't eradicate Hinduism, since Hinduism itself accommodates atheism. There are long skeptic traditions and records of sages and gurus critical of religious orthodoxy like Kabir. As long as a religion is not rigid, and it can change and adapt with the times, then it will survive into the modern times.
These are hardliners on both ends of the spectrum when it comes to atheism and hinduism and these are the people that will do damage. The worst case scenario would be for hinduism to follow modern islam in evolving into a very hardline ideology that demands rigidity and punishes any innovation.

You forgot to mention a critical point that if someone is "anti-religion,", he/she will equally bash all the religions at least practised in Tamil Nadu. However, this is not the case with Dravidian leaders and specifically DMK. So far, I haven't heard a single statement against any religion apart from Hinduism from DMK leaders, which directly suggests that they don't have any issue with the religion per se but are simply anti-Hindu.
Shekhar Gupta made complete episode without using adjectives such as hate speech, hinduphobia, religious intolerance, bigotry, hurting religious sentiments etc. There is complete freedom of expression in India for hurting Hindu religion and sentiments but no freedom of expression is allowed on minority religions like Islam and Christianity. Hate speech is hate speech. While SG has called it out many times even when some random, unknown, orange robed, self proclaimed santh makes some small comment against Muslims, he fails to call Udayanidhi's hate speech as hate speech even once. In fact, he has tried many times to parrot Udayanidhi's excuses and repeatedly used "Brahmanism" to try replace it on behalf of Udayanidhi for Sanatanism. SG also failed to say breaking idols of ganesh was wrong or that they didn't break kurans or jesus statues but only targetted hindu gods in the name of "rationalism". He also didn't condem or tell you about how DMK terrorist goons used to beat up brahmins, catch them and cut their hair and sacred thread in the 60s in one of the worst forms of religious violence in India. This is what all international media and their enslaved minds in India or actual slaves do too. They show a very one sided narrative amplifying even a small hate speech or incident by some hindu radical against others while totally suppressing the atrocities, even terrible ones, from the other sides. Here it is critical for the analyser to take a stand which Sekhar Gupta is too slippery to escape. Periyar’s movement has a solid social-historical background which needs to be understood first before going into Dravid ideological movements. Sanatan Dharma has survived for so long and in spite of such strong and sustained assaults from abrahimic faiths because of its extreme resilience and incorporation of routine reforms. Preponderance of rituals and brahminic dominance has long been the scourge of Sanatan Dharma. To that extent Periyar movement was a necessity to cleanse such dirt. The fact that the faith survives so well inside Tamilnadu and in the houses of its leaders speaks of the abounding strength of Sanatan. There is nothing wrong in reining in the undesirable dominating influence of the Brahmins. Sekhar Gupta should have taken clear stand on the ideology. In stead he ran away while giving partial gyan to the younger uninitiated multitude who know little history. While those multitude pour in accolades on the episode Sekhar has infinitely cluttered it than cutting it!

SG’s narrative is accurate but from a larger religious/political angle alone. You have to think how in a state rich in temples and architecture, esp his favourite town of Kanchipuram, people chose to follow Dravidian ideology in the 1950s when Periyar rose to prominence. That’s where the societal angle comes in. The caste inequality was so rampant then to the extent of physical divisions- non Brahmins couldn’t get into schools or even buses. The documented history of Madras has this in detail. Periyar was the voice of the suppressed- he is the reason the non Brahmins in Tamil Nadu have an education today. His legacy is why the Dravidian parties have such a stronghold today in TN. It is not possible to explain US comments on S Dharma without getting into some religious lessons first , maybe why SG refrained from commenting on it. What is Sanatana Dharma?
There are two types of Sanatana dharmas in our country, Bharat.
The oldest Sanatana dharma is one that forms the essence of the three scriptures, Upanishads, Brahmasutras and Bhagavadgita also termed as “Prasthana Thraya Parijatha”.
What is the essence of these three scriptures?
“Brahma Sathyam jaganmidhya-
Jeevo Bramaiva naparah.”
The Cognitive awareness(Chaitanyam)” is universal, Omnipresent and the One only, but is reflected in all the living beings as many individual souls, just as One Sun reflects as many in several water bodies.
As per Bhagavadgita, individuals are classified into four Varnas/colours based on their birth given qualities(as per their genetic code) also called as three Gunas namely Sathva, Rajas and Thamas.
Those with highest degree of Satva are by nature proficient in mental power and can shine in academics and are termed as Brahmins.
Those with equal degree of Satva and Rajas and least degree of Thamas are proficient at bravery and valour and are termed as Kshatriyas.
Vysyas are of little Satva and mostly Rajas and Thamas and are good at commerce, cattle breeding and raising them in thousands which was a major wealth those days and raising Agricultural fields.
Sudras are mostly of Thamas and less of Satva and Rajas Gunas and so are good at simple activities that would not require too much planning and organization skills. This is a classification that helps an individual to choose an avocation in tune with his inbuilt strengths , so that he can enjoy and excel in his life. It is a purely individual based classification and not family / lineage based. There can be all four types of people in a single family based on his genetic makeup.
What is the moral from the above teachings ?
We, humans and advised to carry on with our lives such as adolescence , family life, old age etc, keeping in mind our intrinsic strengths and also the transient nature of our existence in the broad perspective of the creation and universe with equanimity / Sthitha pragnatha so as to avoid stress and agony. The main tenet of this Advaita philosophy is that we have to be constantly aware of the fact that the Atma in all people is identical,in fact One only, though their mental prowess may be of different levels and treat them with respect and compassion.
The second type of Sanatana Dharma is a diluted version of the above. Due to the effects of Kaliyuga, and growth of population over millennia etc , those universal ideas got diluted and mutated and a hybrid Dharma came into existence which may be called Hinduism . In place of the above three scriptures like Upanishads , Puranas became popular . Instead of an intellectual method, faith based Bhakti cult became popular and as a result Multiple Gods, temples came into existence and subservient mentality got entrenched in the people of the society. This also gave birth to evil practices like caste system and untouchability etc. This second Bhakti dominated, Dwaita philosophy is now being claimed as Sanatana Dharma which is a fake claim.
Udayanidhi’s comments on Sanatana Dharma are to be understood in the right spirit in which he had uttered them. He deprecated the second type of Dharma which created the Dalit system.These days, the words Sanatana Dharma and Hinduism are being misused by all and sundry in social media. Nowhere else in the world such level of discrimination can be seen.
श्रेयान्स्वधर्मो विगुण: परधर्मात्स्वनुष्ठितात् |
स्वधर्मे निधनं श्रेय: परधर्मो भयावह: || 35||

In conclusion, the comments of Udayanidhi should be taken in right spirit and the shortcomings of Hindu society should be addressed to restore it to its rightful status and not be politicized.

What is the net result? You should go by socio-economic indices than with any hairy-fairy analysis. TN today is the second wealthiest state, most educated, advanced in medical care, with a large number of skilled professionals, most vocal women leaders(across parties), most vibrant cultural/entertainment scene, most belligerant print/TV media and with the most number of UN monuments and temples. It is just that they don't let religions come in the way of living sensibly. Basically the people here are open.
