I don't think that Nina is being arrogant really because its like you said, they've both been brainwashed in their own ways and have they both have bad views of each other but even if Matthias is being the "nicer" one at the moment , you have too keep in mind that he is in a position of force so he has that luxury whereas Nina is being held captive on a ship with people that hate her and that are taking her to her death and I believe that her arrogance here is like a coping mechanism , her way of keeping her head up
@@ailawil89 yeah ! And in my opinion Nina and Matthias are not really brainwashed in the same way like , the Fjerdan hate grishas because of isolated events that occurred in the past and they use these events to justify the fact that they are hunting them and killing them . The Grishas hate Fjerdans only as a response to the hateful government that the Fjerdans created and they live in constant fear of being abducted/killed so Nina has every right to be angry and “”arrogant””
She is very versed in Fjierdan culture as well and the #1 thing they respect is courage so he actually would gain respect for her courage so she is acting in her own best interest whether really intentional or not
@@dutchkel Didn't Nina came from a place where they drink Grisha blood? I haven't read that far ahead but I've only seen it from some video about the book. The video said that her and Pekker Rollins came from the same place where they drink Grisha blood.
In the book, it is a first person perspective from Alina. We actually don't know what Mal's doing this point at all, we just assume what Alina is--that Mal has forgotten her. We do find out much later, but at this point most of the readers hated Mal. I love that the show includes his perspective, too, it gives it all much more balance.
I agree, but I also feel like the Darkling was more obviously evil in the books, so I was suspicious of everything he did. And when Mal wasn't responding I immediately assumed his letters were being blocked. TBF I was also really critical of Alina at this point, because I couldn't shake the moment from ch.1 when Mal all but confesses to her and she goes "haha yeah we're good bros" and jokes about being a wingwoman for him, all while being super insecure on the inside. It's not unreealistic, I've been in similar situations, but it immediately made me realize she might not be the most reliable narrator.
As other people have said, I do like Matthias as a character but he's a literal slaver sending her to be executed. Nina is going to be dead when that ship docks so there's is no reason for her to give Matthias the time of day at all. At this point in the story he's undoubtedly awful as that's how he's been raised so I don't think it would be arrogant of Nina to act like that around her captor and slaver. Wouldn't you?
Ok. Important information from the book (which is hard to gather properlt from the series with such a beautiful actress).. but, Alina is supposed to have always been quite frail, thin (never very hungry), always a little sick, and quite dull in terms of looks. Then when she discovers her Grisha powers she starts to feel a little better, but only manages to summon when Kirigan is amplifying her power. It is only when she severs her link to the past, to Mal (when she is convinced he's moved on and is not coming), that she manages to wield her powers alone. And that is when she becomes hungrier, and she feels strong for the first time, and her hair and skin shine (and look healthy), and starts to feel complete. A grisha's health (and uncomon beauty) is directly connected to their use and exercise of their powers.. and she had been stifling hers for many more years/much longer than usual.
Yesss! So many reactors don’t do that and just trash talk Matthias. Sure they the show hasn’t told much from the fjerdan’s or even Matthias’ perspective, but it shouldn’t be too hard to get the message. I liked that these guys brought up thing like “his parent could have been killed by grisha” because it’s the life of many grisha hating folks in the story - most of them have lost family or friends to grisha or the war in general. And with the grisha suddenly being treated like favored by the saints - the normal humans are treated worse than before. Ravka is literally the only country where grisha are protected and not hunted or kept as slaves or science experiments - so there’s also a bigger lot of them. There’s so much information in this story and without reading the books some of it is going to be hard to get right or understand, but the easiest way is just to think about it and try to understand the different perspectives.
his character development is handled SO well (in the books and i hope that, as the shoe progresses, they honor that). it really shows how the system’s in our society indoctrinate people. it’s a very powerful social commentary.
I like your discussion of how much the preconceptions and prejudices of people for other groups are coloring individuals actions. As well as your analysis of the codependency of Mal and Alina. Think about how they each put others in danger in their efforts to be with the other person. Alina did it in the first episode to board the ship with Mal through the Fold. And Mal did it in his hunt for the stag in order to get to Alina. In both situations people who had come with them died.
-Second season is officially renewed guys!!! 🥳🤡👍 -The fandom is a little annoying with this episode 😬, for how they throw the name of The General with such indifference. We had to wait three books!!! to know his name, and here they are throw it at us like nothing. The meaning behind knowing his first name has a deep and sad meaning. We missed one of the most touching interactions between Alina and The Darkling. 😤 -Yes, youre right about the motivations of The General. -Wait to see The Crows in real action, because you haven't seen anything yet. -Alina from the books is more powerful, since she hides her power not using pain but sheer force of will (imagine that). -The love The General has for his people is totally sincere, you may not agree with his methods, but you cannot doubt that what moves him is the wellbeing of his people. -To understand the dynamic between Mal and Alina you have to consider that both are refugees and they have nothing left except each other, Alina's number 1 priority is Mal, and Mal fears/rejects Grisha in some level, then, if Alina showed her powers, that means: one, to be different from Mal, and two, to be rejected by him and loose everything she has and face loneliness.
I’ve always seen the darkling’s motivations to be a little bit more nuanced than just wanting his people to be safe. It is his main motivation and that is definitely how he started out. But after reading the King of Scars duology (no spoilers) it becomes a little bit clearer that next to all of that it is also this selfish and megalomaniac mentality of wanting to be their sole saviour and hero. I think its really beautifully written and done though, even doe I do not like his character.
Matias is a Druskelle (witch hunter) they looking everywhere for grisha, took them to Fjierda and submit them to trails, judge them for being grisha and sentence to death... no innocence...
So Matthias (loml) is actually very patriotic and religious. Fjerda hunts Grisha because they think they're all very unnatural and unnatural things shouldn't exist. No one can blame nina for how arrogant she sounds. In the books its because she's scared. Fjerdans are the monsters straight from her nightmares and stories. And to Matthias, she's the monster from his nightmares. Matthias hates Grisha because of something that happened in the past. And the Fjerdan drüskelle just brainwashed him more. We'll probably understand him better in s3 or s4 when they start the six of crows plot.
Matthias is talking to Nina because he is a curious person and finds her attractive. He is different. He has his own moral code and is curious about hers. Nina is challenging him and he obviously likes to verbally spar with her or he wouldn't continue doing it. Nina also isn't a traditional Grisha either tho as you will find out. She knows a lot about his culture and she is playing into the courage & loyalty Fjierdans admire to get him to talk to her and to possibly survive. Great analysis about Alina, she was taught to dislike Grisha and she has supressed that side of herself so long she is having a hard time integrating that part of herself. She also believes Mal maybe won't accept that part of her and she doesn't know if she can survive without him. They are a bit dependent on each other for sure as they are each others only 'family'. She has to grow up.
