This trailer makes it look way more like a horror story than the storyline actually was. Penny Dreadful is still one of the of the most poetic, beautiful stories I've ever seen told through cinema. Encompasses a lot of themes around redemption, forgiveness, loss, grief, and acceptance.
Yes, although the plot is merely average all of upper mentiomed things compensate it.
I would add to this: great acting, atmosphere, camera, landscapes, picture, light and many other things...
If the plot was at level of these things it would be among best tv shows of 21st century and lergaps of all time. Really great tv series, though

Eva Green is one of my favorite actresses. Beautiful and sexy woman but also a good actress. Wish they casted her for Yennefer in the newest Witcher tv show. I still want her as Catwoman or Zatanna in a DC movie (her chances for Catwoman got lower cuz they already casted other actress for the role and Eva is getting oIder.. but she can still do the Zatanna role imo)

I can't believe this has already been 7 years. What an amazing show with brilliant performances from everyone; Eva Green needs more complex roles where she can shine like this.
IMO this series is almost TOO good. It's not just a mindless blood & guts horror series. The story & characters are extremely deep & complex, while the acting is the best I've ever seen in a horror movie/series. I'm surprised there will be a season 2, because the series doesn't have a large rating/following. (only 600,000 to 800,000 viewers. People who are expecting mindless, bloody, gory horror, will be disappointed. People who enjoy superb acting, a deep & suspenseful storyline, beautiful & intricately designed sets & costumes, intriguing characters, etc, will like it.

Superbly well said...this show is astonishing. I've never seen anything like it. Breaking bad won all the accolades but in my opinion this was actually superior even tho I adored breaking bad.

I binge watched the whole thing. It's all really about how the characters were originally written.
They were written in accordance with popular demand and as horror, BUT left you to fill in the brutality and sex yourself. It's more hinted around.
YOUR OWN MIND fills the details in... THAT'S why it's so scary! It's YOUR OWN mind that makes the original story as ugly, or as pretty, as you like.

The original, historical Penny Dreadful is THE BEST series of ANY sort that I've EVER seen!! I love the work in it... the characters have never shone like this in ANYTHING!!

Part of the reason it was so good is because they didn’t try and drag it out. They told a series of interconnected stories, and told them well. I was sad when it was over, and I didn’t want it to keep going, either?

@Max1982 i didnt expect an idiot to understand what Hannibal is and what it involves, so i am not suprised for this comment. Season 3 was fast because show was cancelled, that they didnt expect. Fuller was planning over 7 sessons and when its cancelled he had to put the things on the book ( red dragon). Even if they were in a hurry season 4 was so deep and meaningful if you just try to understand a bit

Fckin loved this PD show. Sadly I cant even find it on DVD / BluRay in my country to buy it.. so I was kinda forced to pirate in HD quality.. and place it on an USB stick. (cuz I will revisit / rewatch it some day). But overall I wanted to support this show (beyond just viewership)

Every actor in this show was amazing. Each one of them absolutely killed it!
What I love about this series is that, not only is it set on Victorian England and it is filled with references to things I love, but it has also taught me that everyone has a past, but we all have to learn to live with it.

not in this show! this show is all about goore, sex, horror, mysticism, drama! and the main "heroes" are doing their best to disgust you from time to time! but it is really good, never seen anything like this before!

This trailer does the show no justice. The series is absolutely great! Splendid acting, scary supernatural beasts, and a little bit of magic. What more could you ask for? I was so sad when season 3 ended :(

Wow. This looks like we may finally have a truly dark and twisted horror TV show. Considering this is on premium cable, they will have plenty of room for which to tell their story. Having John Logan and Sam Mendes behind this project certainly doesn't hurt. Nor does having someone with the scene stealing talent of Eva Green in what looks to be a leading role. Fingers crossed that this is as amazing as it appears to be.

Ray Prime Within the confines of basic cable, it is. Premium cable shows don't need to worry about language or other graphic displays.

I can't understand why the first series ended! Eva Green and the whole cast were magnificent!
No other series has delved this deep into the mood and spirit of an age, paying respect to its literature, its art, its ideas, its conflicts and myths, while having this incredible level of quality. The character lines are incredible, meaningful, intense and complex, and yet not boring or tedious!

American Horror Story
I can’t believe I only found out about this show in March this year. My boss said I sometimes make a low growling noise when I’m thinking about a problem and sound like Miss Ives. Who is Miss Ives I asked and he told me she was from Penny Dreadful. When I told him I’d never seen it he got excited, we stopped work and he got his phone out and searched for the seance scene in episode 2 of season 1. By the end of the clip I realised I was holding my breath! I was instantly hooked and watched all 3 seasons in just over 2 weeks. Every morning at work my boss would asked what was happening and has gone back and watched it again.

This looks like it has great potential strong cast, great setting, and from what i've read a solid foundation for a truly scary show. "Once upon a time" for Horror fans. Really looking forward to seeing this.

AHS does a great job for what it is. This looks like it'll bump things up a notch because of it's "Pay Channel" status that allows it to be more extreme/graphic. Not sure why people need to have one bash the other. We, as fans of "horror" should be happy that more of the genre is being produced and available.
Penny Dreadful is looking quite different story wise and substantive than AHS, unless you go with the most simplest of comparisons that they're a horror show on the tv.

True Blood isn't dark... even the source material itself (southern vampire mysteries) is more social commentary than horror.

I find this show positively enticing. The way the characters speak and even the silences in between, it holds my undivided attention from beginning to end.

Loved those 3 seasons of Penny Dreadful. Sad that not a lot of people watched it. This show was pretty good.. and it also had the best Victor Frankenstein + his monster story. Very good character development. Sadly.. I couldnt find DVDs / BluRays with this show in my country (Romania). I would have bought all 3 seasons. (cuz I planned to rewatch it)

In the middle of season 1. Goddammnnnn.... best TV series in a long time. stylish in visual and dialogue. Brilliant acting by the casts. Eva Green is mental on this. just search the séance scene. That performance alone creeps me out to no end.

so we watched the first episode, it's not so bad, it's awesome! only reason we watch the show because of JOSH HARTNETT, you must watch this show! it's really interesting and very high quality.... never thought because of the trailer, but once you star watching, it's something else!! it deserves a 9 out of 10 for sure!!

Eva Green is masterful in everything. I have yet to be disappointed, in fact, quite an enthralling experience when she's on screen. I've never experienced such awe watching an actress perform on such a high level.

This show came out of nowhere for me and is the best series this season. Great characters and acting and very good writing. The only bad thing is it's so damn short. Only 8 episodes the first season.

I don't like horror. But I always think it's harder to make horror and make it work than another genre like GOT, movie about law (good wife) or walking dead (wich it's for me not a horror genre) etc . My brother tell me, watch it even if you don't like horror, just to see Eva green, her acting if not you will miss something. Believe me you rarely see this kind of performance, he said. And he's absolutely right. OMG, Eva green is phenomenal. She steal every scene where she is in and finally I'm surprised like this show. The story, parts of evil and humanity, and monster in each human. The actors are great and Eva Green : Give her all the awards, all of them.

Who else watched this to see what kind of show Dom has got a part in. Not into creepy stuff like this but Shadowhunters fandom is going wherever the cast goes so i will give it a try.

No its not realy horror. Its more like drama and thriller. Yes i admit it gets creepy here and there if you are sensitive to it but its not like getting realy scared. Im shure you guys could watch it, its definitly on of the best series i've ever seen. So: *WATCH IT* :D
The portrayal of Frankenstein’s creature was perfect! Right out of the book and undeniably disturbing! I can’t remember the actor’s name off the top of my head, but he played the character so well.

Arguably one of TV, BEST, MOST ORIGINAL SERIES, for TV- on both sides of the Atlantic. I never wanted it to end! And Eva Green's beautiful, evil, her stunning, and original costumes- she stood, seemingly for Eve, in The Garden of Paradise- what man wouldn't fall...And the cast of historical persons, real and fictional. Sigh, when a shows like this ends, one is so let down...all else on TV is mediocre.
