- Is Rose still a great introductory episode for Doctor Who? It brought back the revival in 2005 and the show would not be here today without it, so it must have done something right. But does it still hold up today nearly 20 years later, lets find out.

About the ending, I’ve always interpreted it as Rose trying to make “the right choice” for Mickey and her mother despite not wanting to and then giving up to follow her heart. The time travel wasn’t important for her choice, it was just the excuse she needed.
Thats a nice explanation, that works quite well really. I guess it does seem in retrospect that she was doing the right thing for her family until she realised there was a way around it.

This is very true. The video is fairly well put together, and The Lane seems likeable enough, but the analysis feels a little basic for me. He spends a decent chunk of the breakdown talking about how the Doctor sets himself up as a man of intrigue, but doesn't quite seem to get why she wanted to travel with him. That intrigue buildup + time travel is precisely why. And that's only the plot; it doesn't factor in that Rose is a substitute for the audience (the key reason why the episode was from her POV), a large proportion of whom were identified by The Lane as watching Dr Who for the first time with this episode. Rose, perhaps irrationally, runs off with an intriguing stranger with a box. As the audience getting into the show, we essentially do the same.
I get why someone would want to but for me, even at the end, she seemed like she didn’t want to. Her whole persona changed at the mention of time travel without any explanation. I 100% get why a person would go especially after hearing that but the way I see it, she looks like she would never go with him and then she looks like she would never say no within seconds and it just feels unnatural. Also my focus isn’t to be too analytical, I love seeing analytical breakdowns myself and understanding the shows more. But I never pickup on the deeper things myself so I focus these reviews from that perspective as there will be people that are like that 👍.

Rose travelled with the doctor because Mickey was ordinary, bland and boring. She needed adventure, risk, and excitement.
Yea I understand that. I just feel like the way it was portrayed didn’t work. The total shift for me is what makes it feel weird.
