As a Malayalee, the language that I can easily understand the most is Tamil. I've come to learn that originally Kerala was NOT a Malayalam speaking land, but a Tamil (classical Tamil) speaking land. Many of the Malayalam words (minus the Sanskrit) are actually OLD Tamil words. In fact, the closest Tamil dialect that sounds just like Malayalam is Sri Lankan (Ilankai) Tamil.

From A Tamil===> I know Tamil Telugu Hindi and English perfectly in all their different dialects but still i could catch only like one in every 3 words in Malayalam.(In fact languages other than Tamil didn't help at all)
I felt that it was only because a common native Malayalam speaker probably has a much faster way of speaking than a Tamil guy.But now that i notice the minor changes,It all makes sense.Now i can completely understand Malayalam though i prefer not to speak until i live in a place where only Malayalam can help because I'm skeptical about accents and would require to observe some native speakers before speaking than sounding like a dumb ass.
