- Super Metroid set the bar incredibly high and may be considered one of the best games of all time. How do you top that? Well, you don't. At least not with the approach this game took...
Metroid Fusion is officially called Metroid 4 in the intro and takes place after Super Metroid. As far as I know it is the last game in the chronological order of the series. Samus returns to SR388 where she already exterminated all metroids but one hatchling. There, she is attacked by a life form now called "X". This parasite puts Samus into a critical condition where her chances of survival were deemed very low.
Scientists were able to create a vaccine that included metroid DNA which was taken from the metroid hatchling thus eliminating the X in Samus. however, parts of her power suit had to be surgically removed due to the infection. yep, powers gone again. While Samus recovers, the removed pieces of her power suit are sent to a research station for analysis. the game starts when she docks with the station investigating an explosion.
being a game for a handheld, Nintendo decided to use a more "accessible" aproach in game design. the station is separated in different zones connected by a hub of elevators, but access is restricted until the necessary security overrides for colored doors are activated. of course the environments set restrictions on accessibility too and you may need specific upgrades as in any other metroid game.
at any time you have a clear objective and you can see the map for every zone as you enter the navigation rooms at the entrance of an area. there, you find a computer that tells you where to go and what to do next in cutscenes that you can't skip. while in metroid II it felt like a natural progression that areas open up, it doesn't feel right how metroid fusion handles this. you get sent to different areas several times and each time you can access a bit more the zone. you are spoonfed and and feels way too linear for a metroid game. yes, you backtrack and there are plenty of hidden items for 100% completion, but the objective based gameplay sucks in my opinion.
Samus has a new trick up her sleeve now. she can grab onto ledges and pull herself up. her arsenal has been a bit streamlined. there is no distinction between regular and super missiles. you just get a missile upgrade which turns them all into super missiles. there is also an ice missile upgrad instead of the ice beam and a diffusion effect for the missile which makes it hit an area of effect if charged up. the grappling hook is gone, but you can now climb on ceilings in specific areas. i think the rest is still there.
well, how does it play? it plays very smoothly. Samus feels more ninja-like than ever. the game is not very hard with recharge rooms in every zone and, as mentioned, you can hardly get lost. however, the difficulty spikes if you go for the best ending which is 100% completion (find all upgrades) and keeping the time under two hours. don't even try if you haven't mastered shinesparking (continuously keep a speed boost active). about five or so upgrades are very tricky to get and you waste many minutes if you haven't gotten it down well. even then you need to take shortcuts and use a really efficient route to stay under two hours. it is not frustratingly difficult, but it is a good challenge.
as mentioned, the game handles flawlessly, but the cutscenes that can't be skipped are annoying. you can just speed up the text. the graphics are good. a bit better than what the SNES could do and much more colorful than super metroid thus losing the claustrophobic and gloomy atmosphere. some people may not like it, but the art style is ok. the audio is also very good, but not as good as super metroid.
is it worth your time? absolutely. sure, it is in my opinion one of the weaker entries in the series and i like zero mission more, but since it doesn't have major flaws, most complaints are just nitpicking.

I loved metroid fusion, was a lot more linear but the story IMO was great and the atmosphere that they built really impact me as a player, i genuinely felt scared at points in this game.

I love my games to be linear. Open world is a powerful ingredient that needs to be used sparingly and is abused nowadays. I don’t have all damn day to deal with open world figuring shit out. I’m just here for the ride and need to be able to play comfortably thru a game. We have lives and not all the time in the world to waste on a game we can’t figure out

Funny how this game painted a better picture of Samus' relationship with Adam than what we saw in Other M.
It's like Sakamoto didn't even remember what happened in fusion when directing Other M.
Other M should get a remake retcon. Tell the same base story without the many flaws of M

Mmmh doesn't work with Metroid style. But a The Thing videogame with Alien: Isolation style well that's a good idea.
I feel like SA-X would also talk, in a distorted version of Samus' voice, just saying creepy things while you hide and hope that it doesn't find you. It knows you can hear it, and it knows you're defenseless against it, so all you can do is hide and hope it doesn't see you.

Going into sector two after getting space jump and having to actually run from the SA-X for the first time rather than just hide got the adrenaline pumping without fail each and every time. NEED a sequel

+Restricted The Corde No. SA-X has varia suit. She is the fully powered Samus from Super Metroid. The one you get in the game was another varia suit but an X stole it. The unnamed suit is the suit you get once you retrieve the ice beam after the SA-X is destroyed by the Omega Metroid.
I know a lot of people don't want remakes. But imagine this game being remade in the style of Alien Isolation. That would be terrifying.

Picture a kid who had never seen much of Nintendo. Then picture the Gameboy being this kids Christmas present with a beautiful title by the name of Metroid Fusion. And later the next year his bday present is a GameCube-- along with Wind Waker, and Mario Sunshine. I wasn't much of a gamer. But these three games solidified my status with them forever. Metroid Fusion TO THIS VERY DAY still plays, looks, sounds, and feels amazing. And nostalgia aside, I get that people didn't like the "mission based scenario" but at the time I never played any games like Metroid, so I honestly didn't care, in fact I'm more invested in Metroid's story than anything and the previous titles before Fusion had very little to offer unless you had manuals with you. I get that a lot of people whine about the difficulty spike toward the end but I never noticed it, mostly because I was no speedrunner/upgrade retrieval expert. But nowadays I think I'd be more than well off. Damn, I love me some Metroid 4...

I remember playing this game in kindergarten and being terrified to go any further in it. I picked it back up when I was a freshman in high school after discovering the cartridge and I slapped it back on to my game boy micro, and I was blown away by how much fun the game played. I loved it so much I played it over and over and beat it again and again. I think I’ve replayed it like 12 times since then. God I love Metroid. One day I’m going to get Metroid dread, because I’ve heard a lot of good things about it. I played the demo. It was everything I hoped it would be…
So how was dread?
After the first two Metroids, it was this game and Super Metroid that really stood out as giving a very epic, vague, and creepy feeling to them. Its what made this and Super Metroid probably one of the best games in the Metroid series.
Super Metroid is, hands down, the best. But this one is the pinnacle of 2D survival horror

@@Dhieen Yea, he did it a different way by using an oversight but originally your supposed to shine spark your way over there by using slopes layered throughout the water place, most people will see it as decor, but it's also put in there for players crazy enough to attempt it. I really enjoy the sounds of the monsters in this game. Because of the GBA’s increased capabilities with graphics and sound, they were able to give these creatures more realistic sounding screeches than in previous games. I especially love the Ridley-X one.
Ridley-X is basically an abomination of Ridley’s race that the X changed specifically to be able to exterminate creatures more efficiently than Ridley’s normal race ever could on their own. They took it upon themselves to take this creature and morph it to their liking. Notice how the X not only made it bigger but also increased it’s claw size and made it’s head smaller (probably meaning they made it’s brain smaller). They purposely decreased the head size because this isn’t a natural creature with instinct and intelligence. It’s a monster created with the intent to only do one thing, kill. So a complex brain isn’t required.
What follows this abomination unto nature is a horrific, more realistic screech that’ll send chills down your spine as you fight it... or burst your ear drums. Either one.

A ton of people say that Metroid: zero mission was the best GBA metroid game but personally I think this one is the best.

I had no idea there were that many upgrades. I beat it with about half of the energy and rockets shown here which made it much more difficult.

This graphics and colors are just amazing. It's a really good game.
I absolutely loved this game. Its probably my favorite Metroid game of all time. The creepy atmosphere and that constant feeling of fear caused by the music and the SA-X makes this game stand on its own.
I hope Nintendo one day decides to revisit this game and possibly remake it with updated graphics. I'm pretty sure it would sell really well.
I just hope they re-release it along with Zero Mission and Super Metroid for Switch.

I still love that message from the Computer addressing the players. It was my first experience with a 4th wall break, and I was giddy about it.
My favorite metroid game. The dark atmosphere always makes me feel like I'm being watched or followed, and I'm in constant fear of encountering the SA-X. Such an amazing game, would love a 3D remake.

My first Metroid game. I'll admit, I wasn't too impressed when I first played it. But as time went on, and the more Metroid games I played, the more I truly enjoy this game as well as the series in general. Its a truly amazing series!

Adam was a much cooler concept of a character in Fusion until we actually met him in Other M... Then I was like, "Ehhhh..."
I wrote a fanfic that takes place after Fusion that retcons Other M out and places the Prime Trilogy between Super and Fusion. I also redesigned Samus underneath the suit, giving her a scar, dirty hair, and a tattoo of the Screw Attack symbol on her back. I also completely overhauled the Zero Suit, making it navy blue coveralls with a brown jacket and white boots and underneath that is the black bikini from Super Metroid.

I struggled with nightmare
The fucking spider one. When there’s no saves anywhere near. Then right after you beat it you run into SA-X. With no recharge rooms or anything since the ship. Unless you execute it perfectly you can’t do it. Just quit playing and I’m not coming back, screw this game

This game did an amazing job. The Culmination of Metroid/Metroid 2/Super Metroid/ and the prime games. A return to the roots of Metroid with that awesome SNES feel. Just amazing and that soundtrack and sound design is fantastic in this game.

I like how this fits in after Metroid 3, because at the beginning, it said: "Nintendo Presents METROID 4: METROID FUSION" And at the end of the game it shows the animals from Planet Zebes! I like the text that pops up after you enter the Operations Room, it says the following: "Orbit change implemented. 3 minutes to impact."
Super Metroid is still my favorite, but this game is a close second
This was my first Metroid, for game boy advance.
My mind was blown by how good this game was.
I knew the saga, but never played it.
This is one of those cases where less is better. Less is more.
This game was very simple and yet it was FILLED with contents, the story is very strong (actually better than Dread if you ask me) and the fake Samus chasing you is terrific.
Just remember that this game is 20 years old.

This is and will always be a great and excellent game in the Metroid series. There's no room for complaints that it doesn't play like the old classic ones, when technology is far and beyond since the past years. Wanting everything to be the same gives and shows no signs of a game moving and evolving forward with new mechanics and newer features.

I still love how the SA-X reacts to Samus. It tries to freezes you, and then shoots you with a super missile. Because that's how you would kill a Metroids.

Not sure what that Fusion hate in the description is all about. This is my favorite Metroid game, easily. No other game in the series provides the level of atmosphere and buildup that this game gives, with such eerie enemies as Nightmare and the SA-X. Whenever you're in Nightmare's area on a first playthrough, it gives a sense of foreboding, and they keep you suspenseful about that area until near the end of the game. Then there's the fact that you're hunted throughout the game by full-power Samus clones, making every empty room feel dangerous (since they have a tendency to show up after you enter a room with no enemies). Then there's the security robot, too, which appears out of nowhere in areas that don't really look much like boss arenas.
There isn't much of the element of blind exploration in Fusion, which is admittedly what the Metroid series as a whole is primarily about, but that is replaced with the thrill of trying to survive in a locked-down facility when everything's actively trying to kill you. Most of the bosses go out of their way to find and attack you, and something's constantly happening to keep you on your toes. There aren't any other Metroid games I can think of that really make you feel weak and hunted. Perhaps this means Fusion is likely for people with different preferences, but I certainly wouldn't call it any worse than Super Metroid.

Nope. Adam states that there are at least 10 SA-X roaming around the BSL actively searching for you. That's why you see one of those die at the Metroid's preservation area, and then you fight another one near endgame.

I just completed Fusion after having played the other 2D metroids for the first time as well and all I'm wondering is why the hell I didn't get into the series earlier! Super stoked for Metroid Dread now, I'll play the prime trilogy when Prime 4 gets formally revealed.

There's an easier method involving a skewed missile shot at the inflatable things blocking the way back to the computer ^^ look it up if you don't know what I'm talking about

While I agree with what you said in the description about this game, my one big complaint with this game is that it's idea of game play is being linear as all hell. Fusion in it's own sense took some of the fun out of the Metroid series and FORCED the player to do specific things in a sequence. It's like what Egoraptor said in his Sequelitis about Legend of Zelda, "You're no longer exploring a world, you're being taken on a tour. You're no longer a pioneered adventurer, you're a guest at Disney Land.". I feel that if Nintendo left Fusions style of game play and story events in Super Metroids style, this game would have been a TON better, but the fact that you can still sequence break SOME things in the game, be it by normal game play or TAS, the game won't count the sequence break until you've done your objective marked out for you.
But that's not to say I didn't enjoy Fusion, it was honestly my very first GBA game, and I STILL have it. So either way, this was a very good game and I hope Nintendo will look back and try another Metroid game to (maybe) make up for Other M considering the back lash it got.

+Professor Epinephrin look this happens in 4 sector is when u win the purple suit and is going to the sector 4 there then you will have to unlock the red door and then use the speed Booster to reach that place of red door that was blocked and then get on the computer.
I never did finish this game but it was a lot of fun. This and Pokemon Ruby Version were the only games I ever had for the Game Boy Advanced. I liked how they changed the tone of the game. Looking back, it's eerie in comparison to most of the games in the series.

I personally like this game(despite its difficulty and getting my stuck several times).
I absolutely adore the style of this game it manages to be retro but not clunky, it has slow moments but not slow enough to get boring, and fast paced action but not so fast that it becomes hard to comprehend, truly one of the best gba games and possibly one of the best games period
