  • Mike Sealy, Head Coach at UCLA, dives deep into blocking fundamentals. First, train blockers to keep their elbows closer to the middle of their body and extend the hands straight up. This will cut down on the number of attacks that trickle through the middle of the block. Second, penetrate the net with the hands and create a seal.

I really liked how he asked for the smallest blocker. How you can be efficient as a blocker with simple skill set. To many coaches & clubs lack the willingness to break down each player(s) and their position, work the on the skills and fundamentals they need for that position. As a youth and H.S. Baseball coach. Even with Jr. & Sr. I spent a lot of time with "situation / Position skills... Most of all I coached the "WHY" I wanted them to be "Right There"....and why each player had a place to be. Since our Daughter began playing Volleyball, this has been my pet-peeve. I luv Coach Jim Stones quote: "I'd rather a player do something wrong, than do NOTHING at all". Players will do "less" wrong if they are not just coached but trained in the position skills and coached "Why" they are being they are to do "it"
And I've watched well skilled positioned / coached teams beat in straight sets bigger teams. The old school sports axiom rains true. Defense wins championship.

5:28 That's what every good coach does. Someone asks a question, deliver an oh so funny sarcastic comeback. Confuse and humiliate. That's the goal.
