No matter how much you dislike a driver, you don't cheer at them crashing like that. Embarrassing and distasteful antics from the crowd that day. EDIT: To cover my ass here, in case I get the anti Schuey crowd sending the lynch mob after me, I also didn't/don't condone the German fans celebrating when Hill crashed out in Hockenheim. But that accident was relatively minor. Michael's crash here immediately looked bad yet fans were still laughing when he was removed from the car on a stretcher. No concern whatsoever. Say what you want, we looked like complete fucking wankers that day. Just my opinion.

Just one leg, but yes, he was quite lucky during his professional career, much like the likes of Hamilton and Vettel who have never had big crashes either. Such a sad irony that his life-changing accident came in his retirement.
Yeah you definetly didnt see this live. What made you think he died? It was a crash at barely over 60 mph into a thick tyre barrier, and these cars were leaps ahead of cars from even 15 years before
It was definitely not as bad as Olivier Panis' crash from Canada '97 that broke both his legs and feet, which changed him forever as a driver which is a shame considering the true potential he had. Michael's season ended there, but he came back to finish the season and made a promise to Eddie Irvine and Ferrari to help out in their hunts for the championship.
I was on that corner when Michael went off. It was a hellish crash. He did not slow at all. Yes we thought he was dead. I don't remember any cheering. Proper fans of motor racing don't cheer when accidents occur. A wonderful competitor. We wish him well.

You can see that the German DF1 director saw what was happening on the onboard feed but couldn't get it over to the supersignal in time. I've seen the French F1D+ feed and the cut to static then to the pic of the Ferrari doesn't appear on their feed.
I was there at that race. I was in a grandstand at Stowe. A rumour started spreading across the grandstand in minutes that Michael had died originally... thankfully he survived albeit with a broken leg I believe.

Ich habe es damals so aufgefasst, dass der Ferrari mit Vollgas in den reifenstapel knallte nur die Vorderräder haben sichtbar gebremst. Ich hatte als damals 11 jähriger ein paar tränchen vergossen in dem Moment als die Streckenposten am Ferrari von Schumi standen. Aber als er auf der Trage im Fernsehen gewunken hatte dachte ich Gott sei Dank ist nicht mehr passiert

That probably didn't help -- the tyres in the tyre wall may have been pushed apart because of that geometry, hence may have been less effective. If he'd hit a straighter bit of barrier at the same speed, or a concave section of barrier, it might have absorbed the impact better with three rows of tyres.
Could have won 11! 1997 - case Villeneuve. Just let him go past and then strike back! 1998 - what would have happened had he not stalled his car on the grid or ran over debris that led to the puncture? 1999 - Silverstone…without the rear brake failure he would have not crashed. 2006 - Suzuka and engine. Unreal moment when you think for how long MSC managed to drive races without engine failures. Hockenheim 2001 was the previous before Suzuka.
@Triband I can’t see Villeneuve as a talent. With the '96 & '97 Williams-Renault cars it was difficult to lose a title. He became a joke after he joined BAR. Remember that this guy was taunting and downtalking his own teammate Button, acting like he meant something to F1. JV was just an overnight sensation who benefited massively from the machinery. Mika was great(i’m Finnish btw!) and his talent deserved a title, no doubt. I just feel that in 1998 Schumi and Ferrari fought for the title until the end with an inferior car and Suzuka could have gone either way without the stalling and puncture. In '99 McLaren nearly ran out of ideas how to (almost) fuck up a title challenge😂reliability problems, a stupid team decision and some driver mistakes. Michael Schumacher deserves better. OK he was very competitive. So what. Racing Drivers are bloody competitive. A slight edge is always sought. I was there and on that corner everyone was concerned. I don't remember cheering. Hard core enthusiasts never celebrate accidents. All these drivers are good. The difference between winning and not are thin margins and luck.
I didn't realise the long gap between the red being called and the accident...why the hell wasn't the team on the radio so he wasn't charging at full speed into the corner?
Red flags were pretty rare at that time, from when they introduced the safety car in the mid 90s until the recent few years there were hardly any red flags, they covered most things under the safety car. But yes it is a bit weird that no one seemed to noticed, I don’t know if the message hadn’t got to all the marshal posts or something.
Couldn’t imagine going straight for a wall at that speed and having no control over it. Definitely takes balls of steel to be a racing driver with the risks at hand.

Schumi hätte in dem Jahr locker die WM gewonnen ohne diesen Unfall. Ich kann bis heute nicht verstehen, wieso da nicht mehr Reifen standen. Nach einer Geraden mit so hoher Geschwindigkeit hätten auch damals schon deutlich mehr Reifen stehen müssen. Treppenwitz der Geschichte, dass es dann später bei einem Ski Unfall schlimmer kam. :(

Bin zwar kein Schumi-Fan, aber da muss ich dir Recht geben. Schumi hätte ohne diesen Unfall die WM am Ende ähnlich souverän wie im Jahr 2000 gewonnen. McLaren-Mercedes war immer für einen Defekt gut und Häkkinen hatte 1999 einige Fahrfehler drin (Imola, Monza, Nürburgring)

Seh ich anders. Schulz is mit Emotion dabei und machte das authentisch in meinen Augen. Und Surer war sein kongenialer Sidekick. Wasser und Danner fand ich auch nicht schlecht, mittlerweile schau ich mir die alten Rennen mit Schulz und Surer lieber an.
Wir reden hier von der Formel 1 und nicht darüber ob ich das überleben würde. Den Abflug von Panis zwei Jahre vorher fand ich weitaus übler. Oder den von Webber 2003 in Brasilien. Ich frag mich wie es sein kann dass sich Schumacher das Bein bricht wenn das Kiesbett um 100 km/h verzögert. Und ebenso frage ich mich was wohl passiert wäre wenn da kein Kiesbett gewesen wäre wie eben bei Mark Webber oder Panis. Surer und Schulz hätten sich wohl selbst dann ins Hemd geschissen wenn Schumi nix passiert wär.

Jaques Schulz war der Grund kein Premiere Abo zu haben und Formel 1 nur auf RTL zu schauen und die Werbung in Kauf zu nehmen . Dieses Dummgesülze und die Stimmlage kann man sich nicht antun!
Seh ich anders. Schulz is mit Emotion dabei und machte das authentisch in meinen Augen. Und Surer war sein kongenialer Sidekick. Wasser und Danner fand ich auch nicht schlecht, mittlerweile schau ich mir die alten Rennen mit Schulz und Surer lieber an.

Wir reden hier von der Formel 1 und nicht darüber ob ich das überleben würde. Den Abflug von Panis zwei Jahre vorher fand ich weitaus übler. Oder den von Webber 2003 in Brasilien. Ich frag mich wie es sein kann dass sich Schumacher das Bein bricht wenn das Kiesbett um 100 km/h verzögert. Und ebenso frage ich mich was wohl passiert wäre wenn da kein Kiesbett gewesen wäre wie eben bei Mark Webber oder Panis. Surer und Schulz hätten sich wohl selbst dann ins Hemd geschissen wenn Schumi nix passiert wär.
@@dimitrikoblovski2946 damals gab es noch keine safer barrier. Schumacher ist straight durch die Reifenstapel durch in die Betonmauer. Was zum Beinbruch geführt hat. Webber ist 2003 seitlich in die Reifenstapel und hat sich nicht wie Schumi regelrecht durchgebohrt.
