Bay Bridge's lights to go dark

- The electronic lights display along one side of the Bay Bridge will be turned off Sunday. The installation is 10 years old and in constant need of maintenance due to the wind, moisture and salty air that batter the bridge. There's an effort underway to raise money to update the lighting system, however.

So everyone pays toll fee but they don’t have money to replace the lights?
I know..total bullshit
Would you like pavement repairs , or lights ?? Cmon man….
Toll fares pay for bridge maintenance. It does not go towards the light installation.
Are you slow? The lights are decorative feature to the bridge. The toll fee is maintenance for the bridge.
And they plan to continue rising prices over the years
If the city of San Francisco decides that their PG&E charges are too expensive to keep the lights on there has got to be something off! Are we being Enron'ed again?! Something doesnt smell right.
I only wonder how much the founder and other owners/executives have pocketed.
I wonder who’s pocket that money went to smh
What time do the lights go out is what I want to know!
How about raising money to fight crime?
Last I checked it was funded project that was supposed to be permanent. So what happened to that?
Right I remember that too!!
Someone took too much of that money, big surprise.
Maintenance and repair costs have been higher than anticipated.
More reasons for them to enrich their bank account.
Illuminate (headed by Ben Davis) is also the organization that puts a lighted pink triangle on Twin Peaks during the month of June.
Toll plaza not enough???
An so has the future of this city
Fix the crime not the bridge
The lights have been funded by private donations, not by tax payers.
it will be solved if we won't allow scumsh*ts from BLM city across the bay into the city
I have loved this for years and think it makes the entire Embarcadero worthy of enough tourism to pay for repairs and maintenance. Furthermore, why can't tidal turbines attached to the bridge footing be used to create electricity for the lights?
Who pays the PG&E bill ?
F those lights get the crap off my sidewalk!!!!!!!!
MOST of those people interviewed were " oh, I like the lights its so beautiful" but these people aren't realistic. A few good spot lights like the golden gate bridge would be better, they would last a long time and they wouldn't interfere with the painting of the bridge. Not to mention the damage to the bridge those lights create, those cables can be compromised lets be real, if SF wants to be artsy do up city hall. the bay bridge is not their property. get those energy sucking demons off the bridge!!
Excuse me, but aren't those 50,000 LED's going to deteriorate as well?
That guy said it'll leave a hole in the heart of the city the city live without them and they will live again without them - this city along with others is no more many people locals have got pushed out over the many years it's not the same as you used to be when visited or lived
I still have a set of unused tickets for the original BridgeWalk that they did after the repair of the 89 earthquake
“…the bay is a harsh environment for electronics.” Is that a surprise to you?
That is A LOT of money for the lights. Good lord!
Sell the scraps as souvenirs instead of sending them to a chinese landfill.
I liked the lights when I'm in San Francisco and looking at them from behind the Ferry Building, but nothing lasts forever. It's hard enough to keep the street lights going where I live. I hope they're replaced with something better soon.
Lights on bridges in Europe are being turned offffff to save energy.....
What Ben Davis???
We are too poor to keep the lights on
Okay but what about the people that originally payed for memorial lights
i did not know there is a light show on the bridge....... i suppose i just pay the tax..... :-(
NOOOOOOOOO
the lights are badly damaged slowly over time, and so as SF
Just leave these ones up until you have enough money to replace
😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
I love the lights! Makes the bridge looks beautiful at night … hopefully some rich people donate the money
Use the money from the homeless since that money obviously not working in San Francisco and pay cut city employees
They should have enough money to replace them right away , they make so much money everyday
Nooooo
They’re really doing this with how bad freeway shootings have been lately lol ok let’s see how this plays out…
quit wasting energy.
Cheap quality that's all don't give excuses
Next time use LED. Don't do an art payment per year and then threaten to turn them off because the artist wants more money
Why do we pay a toll for.
The lights _are_ , in fact, LED. Toll fares do not fund the lighting installation. These were funded by private donations ten years ago.
strange priorities
I always thought they looked goofy.
Yo momma was goofy last night
Those lights are iconic going to miss them
End of times
Such a shame..it's gonna look ugly now,,the lights are beautiful
The bridge itself is beautiful. Think of how long it's been in existence without lights. We (humans) create so much light pollution, which disturbs the natural (as in NATURE) existence of birds, marine life, and wild animals. The Bay Bridge existed for many years without being lighted. Woohoo! People can say "Wow I saw the lights on the Bay Bridge!" But let's put the money to some more effective use, such as solving the fentanyl and homelessness crises, which are creating such devastating effects on San Francisco all over. The City used to be my Nirvana, ever since my family visited decades ago when I was eight years old. (No lights on the Bay Bridge then, and it was still a beautiful bridge.) I lived there for years in my twenties, but I won't set foot there now and I've heard many others say the same thing,. The Bay Bridge will continue to exist just fine without the lights. Put the money towards making San Francisco more safe and beautiful again all over The City, not just the Bay Bridge during nighttime hours.
@@scallaghan2118 and homeless,,well who the he'll can afford rent..lol of course your be homeless no one is rich to afford that much rent no wonder why so many homeless, drop the rent maybe people can afford to live
@@AlisaRedBandana The lights were funded by private donations, not tax payers.
F dem lights the bay has other problems to worry about
We create too much light pollution. There are far better ways to spend the money. (? 10 million ?) Think of the negative effect on marine life, and other wildlife. Find some way to spend the money on solving the fentanyl crisis and the homelessness crisis. Let the beautiful San Francisco Bay and its marine inhabitants live the natural way they are supposed to live - when it's dark, it's dark.
Hmm, negative effect on marine life and other wildlife. How so? I haven't read or seen any studies indicating those lights are detrimental to marine life or any other animals. I am sure you have proof of this so it must be true.
So they don’t have money to replace the lights in the bay bridge but they have billions of dollars for Ukraine? What the hell is wrong with this picture
SF is dead. Let's face it
Sad
Alive n well …if u can’t afford it probly not best for ya bud
Sounds like a job for 💰🦸♀️ 💰 .... E. Musk
Whats next, let me guess. A LGBTQQIA+ Rainbow Bridge Project. -god help us!
Illuminate (headed by Ben Davis) is also the organization that puts a lighted pink triangle on Twin Peaks during the month of June. They've been doing it since 2020.
Who cares, they're going down just like the city
Good. It was a waste of money
The lights were funded by private donations, not by tax payers.
don't care
At this point with everything going on, that money should go to the homeless and people in need.
A great deal of money is already being spent on the homeless and people in need to the point of the city even purchasing the drugs and paraphernalia needed to shoot up.
No it shouldn't. If you want more homeless, keep paying them. They're coming from all over the country for that free drug money. What we really need is state run mental hospitals.
Probably the only thing near San Francisco that I have never seen live that I would love to see, but it’s not worth the stench, horror and danger of getting anywhere near that now hell hole of a city.
I don't live in S.F. but it is not. it has issues but all cities do. From your comment, I assume you've haven't been in the city in over 10 years (you've never seen the bridge lights), so how do you know it's a hell hole? From what you watch on certain TV channels?
@@roachtoasties I’ve been in the City from the ‘60s through the aughts- I’m from the Bay Area, I know exactly how it is which is why I haven’t been back. It used to be magical, now it is a crime-ridden (highest property crime in the nation for years) poop splattered, fentanyl abusing wasteland.
This is why SF is doomed. 10 million is a drop in the bucket for the city and for them to let something like this go is insane. They'll spend 200+ million a year giving homeless drugs that contributes to the city's decline but won't spend 10 million to fix a loved art installation that brings thousands to the city and help add hundreds of thousands if not millions to the city's general fund each year.
We are truly living in end times when even the simplest issues and priorities can't be taken care of by your city supervisors.
The end stage of the welfare state.
Expense
Better brighter future 😳
Turn out the lights
The stars.
$11 million dollars. 😳
How about porta potties
for hungry homeless ?
🤺💐
The problem is you need to find a better and cheaper way too light up thr bridge. That technology is 10 if not more years old and way to many lights. How about clear tubing with lights at each end LED run cool and do not create much heat.
Describe the Bay Area in 3 words: NOT PRESTIGIOUS ANYMORE
Homeless and burglary artists.
Anything that raises our taxes makes sense. Democrats 🤦🏾♂️
We can't have shit nice
"We just need $11 MILLION for the new artsy light installation"...meanwhile families & their children are starving around the world 🫠
They don't care about that..they only care about the image of a beautiful looking buildings park bridges they don't care for mass starvation,,pretty sad isn't it
I don’t who’s starving in Ethiopia , Iraq, or anywhere else but home ….
@@RandomRandomnessKCMO Sorry, I don't understand your comment
Recession ?
How about using all that money to provide affordable housing for homeless prople instead of putting up a bunch of new lights? Make some artistic creative usable housing.
The lights were funded by private donations, not by tax payers.
Mayor London Dog Breed can't even build a genderplex outhouse for $11million in San Franshitco
Good way to show tourists to stay home - turn street lights out too , to give organized crime heyday ....
