  • Tim Keller sermons via Gospel in Life: Greed is a particularly dangerous sin because it hides in our hearts while binding us to our materialistic desires. Money has tremendous power over us: for some it is our significance, for others it is our security. We can break free from our slavery to money by treasuring Jesus, who was willing to pay the ultimate price so that we may be his ultimate treasure.

This is still relevant back today in 2021 as it was 22 years ago in 1999

Giving till it affects your lifestyle is easy when you're struggling already. Rich people give a lot, and it is a good thing. But they hardly suffer from it.
I'm reminded of the woman giving 2 (or was it 3) small coins VS the rich dude that Jesus commented on. The woman gives much more because it hurts her more.
    Great message

The poor person already lives in the suffering of poverty and therefore has a humbled heart and in the case of the rich person their wealth gives them a godly status devoid of suffering which intern makes them proud rather than humble to God.

This is a wonderful saying I have never heard before, thanks for sharing. Yes, powerful sermon from CS Lewis of our time. I wish someone would organize an online Zoom meeting so we could debrief on Keller’s sermons together. I guess we kind of do that in these comments.

If your eye is good was a Jewish Idiom meaning to be generous

Yep, spot on. Just need to look into the Greek word from which it’s translated from and how’s it’s used in the other passages in the NT. And given its context, it means one of generosity and giving liberally.

Interesting how this sermon--much like his mentioned seven deadly sins conference--has so few views/likes🤔
    Feeling convicted here, w/ a capital ''C'.

I agree with alot of his talks but in this one he's being patronizing. Money does give security, and buys you life. It won't turn you into an immortal obviously. How many people die coz they can't afford food/ medicine or get killed in the streets coz they can't afford housing? How many people died coz they put all their eggs in 1 basket and didn't have a plan B when things went south? I can tell this guy has never lived in poverty. Money isn't everything, and greed is a real problem, but pretending that money isn't instrumental to our survival is naive.

I grew up in financial poverty. I had rich and beautiful relationships with my family. My financially rich cousins looked at us with envy and would come stay with my family. I had an amazing childhood and lived it with people. I would give my all to be there when I am needed. God granted me the gift of a life where I had all the important things and money was well down the list. God bless.
