Thank you for your thorough review on this dock. Made me realize that most people who reviewed this and similar docks, have not idea what they are talking about...or are being paid for the review. I think I'm better off selling my base model 8gb/256gb Mac Mini and waiting to see what comes out next. Even though this seems to be the best dock, it is still too much of a compromise.

a newer Mac is not going to stop the need for a powered dock if you want to use more then the ports you have you need a powered dock how eve the 8x256 Macs are a joke to say the least , you really need a min of 16 gigs of ram as well as noting less then a 500 gig hard rive /ssd but a powered dock is still needed how ever this still in no way alllows you to fill up every port at once you still need to watch what you plug in but you should have for this dock at least a 5 amp power supply to power it properly I have sense this review order in a 5amp power supply for it as iam finding the 3amp is a bit tight on power

My buddy as an HP Elitedesk Mini that is smaller than a Mac Mini, has 32gb of RAM, (2) 1TB NVME drives and a 2TB Sata SSD...Not as powerful as the Mac Mini, but I'm still jealous. Really, the only reason I wanted a dock, was for more reliable storage and my friend mocks me with 4TB of SSD storage, inside his tiny PC. lol.

Thank you for pointing out the importance of adding a power supply to the hub. However, I don’t understand the discussion about selecting a high-power (>15w) supply. If you look closely at the Amazon rear photo of the hub, you can see ‘5v Power’ stenciled above the power supply port. And in the Customer Question and Answers on the second page: {Question:Is it possible to have two docks? Answer:Yes, it is. But you need to make sure each dock gets enough external power supply through the USB-C port on the rear of the dock. The port is with silk print as "5V Power"}. USB-C has a power limit of 5 volts at 3 amps, 15 watts. Given the answer it appears the maximum power delivery to port B is 15w (5v 3a). Possibly the port is USB PD which could accept up to 100 watts, 20 volts 5 amps. That question needs to be asked of the vendor before adding a high wattage power supply.

Wow, just learnt a lot about unpowered hubs thank you! That raises a question for me, if I run a second monitor for my M1 Mac mini and I use the thunderbolt port at the back and a USB C to HDMI cable am I a liable to damage the port on the Mac mini running a monitor through it? Thank you!

    • @KevinMillard68

what i can tell you is the M1s is this the M1 and M2 MacBooks natively support just one monitor, the M1 Mac Mini does natively support up to two external monitors-one via the HDMI port and a second via USB-C. But the M1 models of the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro support only one external display.

kingston drives tend to use around 1amp tops tho they do run on less they seem to be more stable the the wd drives that use 1.6 amps , so i would lean toward kingston for the drive for the large stata bay and for m.2 nvme drives for the other slot i was using a western digitial for that one and tho these drive use more then 2amps internal on a computer mother board you can get at least 1amp to them in the dock , how ever the external powersupply i was using was a type c to type c generic apple 3amp power supply the best power supply would be the real apple 146watt powersupply to optimal power for the hub you still will not be able to use all the ports all at once but you can at least use a few at a time plus the 2 drive bays and be ok with 4amps .

Wow, my head is spinning with all this stuff. I have a Mac mini M2 Pro on order. I know nothing about these sorts of hubs. So I have some very specific questions. If I got the Qwiizlab, I would like to put in the maximum amount of storage in the hub, which I understand is 8TB. What types of the large and small ("stick-looking") drives would you specifically recommend? (All of questions involve both make and model.) What specific brand and type of charger would you recommend? The wire for the charger looks rather short. What kind of charging wire could I get which is much longer than the one they provide. I currently have 6 external drives hooked up to my iMac. How would I hook them all up to the Mac mini (obviously I can't connect all of those to the Qwizzlab) ?

considering the speeed limits of USB bus i would not buy a super fast drive because you wont see more then 800mps tops, as for power suopply just get your self and type c power supply that has at leave 3 to 5 amps i would go for 5amps my self the only one i know of its apples 140 i think it is or 146 watt power suply that would be the best choice. also keep in mind when you go larger is storage the drives want more and more amps of power voltage will be fine no matter way but amps is part of watts match in general so also be carfull to choose wisely on this area as well. if yoi go beyond 2tb storage then at that point i woiuld go for an external powered thunderbolt drive i have videos on this subject as well on ssd drives

interesting review on that particular hub... which is connected via USB as i understand!! there is another Hub of interest which is the Satechi hub, which is connected via the USB-C port on the rear of the m1 Mac mini, which i gather would provide more amperage than the Hub you have reviewed.. and Satechi have warned of using the front USB-C port for charging... for the very reason you point out in your video!! It is a interesting consideration to know the Transfer speeds upon the ports being shared!!
And like you, i deal with midi controllers keyboards etc and needed to find a method of expanding the amount of ports..on the M1 mac mini
and currently the method and hardware im gravitating toward would have me purchase Satechi usb-c stand hub and using x2 mbeat 7port powered hubs duck taped or velcro'd to the sides of the Satechis usb-c hub(facing up) to provide 14 extra usb slots..one of the 7port Mbeats attached via usbs off the Satechi and the other 7port attached to the back USB portsThis will effectively give you 14USB ports + 2 spare USB ports on the satechi + 1 back usb + 2 free USB-C ports + one free m.2 slot on the Satechi hub.
Admittedly the m1 Mac mini will look like a Frankenstein... but who cares!! very useful for a Music production setup where USB's are needed for midi gear/midi-controllers/SSD-sample library's and audio-interfaces etc etc

My goal was to add a NVMe and SATA drives and free up a USB-C port on my Mac Studio that is currently connected to a 4k display. In the product description for the Hagibis unit it says all ports are usable when the Mac is connected to USB-C(a) and also talks about adding an external power supply to USB-C(b) when adding two drives to the unit.
However, in the tiny instruction manual, and also since confirmed by email from Hagibis support it's a different story. USB-C(a) only provides power and data for the NVMe, SATA, Front USB and SD card ports. USB-C(b) only provides data and power for the DisplayPort. So there is no way to add external power to the unit - if you attach external power to USB-C(b) as recommended in the product description, all you are powering is the DisplayPort - however, unless you have your Mac attached to USB-C(b) there is nothing to display. So in order to use all ports and drive bays in the Hagibis unit, you have to connect two USB-C cables from your Mac to the two rear USB-C ports on the Hagibis unit.
This brings up the question, what exactly is the purpose of the DisaplyPort Model - if you have to connect USB-C on your Mac to USB-C(b) you could just connect your display directly to the USB-C port on your Mac!

Thanks for your very detailed video. Because I am from Europe (Greece), and given the fact that we have 220V AC, could you pelase help me and tell me how many watts do I need to have to supply my hub correctly?

      @KevinMillard68  Рік тому +1

the best option is 140 watt in order to deliver the amps you need to the hub, iam still using a 65 watt and it barely does it but it does seem to work so far but i have to save my money for a 140 watt one still to many other projects have been putting that off but so far as long as iam carfull i have been ok at 65 but 140 is what you should get

@@KevinMillard68 I have a similar hub from Hagabis, and am powering it currently with a 65w Amazon Basics single port adapter. The NVME drive just goes offline when I try to use it. So I've been scouring Amazon for ANY USB-c adapter that offers above 3 amps at 5 volts. Even the UGreen 140w charger carefully says that, although it will give you 140w out, the max you can draw at 5 volts is 3A! Here are the detailed specs published on Amazon:
      Single-Port Output USB-C1: 5V/3A 9V/3A 12V/3A 15V/3A 20V/5A 28V/5A 140W Max PPS: 3.3-21V/5A; USB-C2: 5V/3A 9V/3A 12V/3A 15V/3A 20V/5A 100W Max PPS: 3.3-21V/5A; USB-A: 4.5V/5A 5V/4.5A 5V/3A 9V/2A 12V/1.5A 22.5W Max
If you have a line on any power brick that actually goes above 3A on the 5v port, I'd very much like to learn about it. Or am I misunderstanding? Is the PPS: 3.3-21V/5A the key?

I have measured the voltage and current to this Hub using 2 X USBC cables and in line meters on each cable fed from my M1 Mac mini, I can confirm the power IS shared !!! My hub is fitted with a Samsung EVO SSD and a WD Black nvme. However a separate PSU is preferred as it frees up a port on the Mac mini. OK OK OK OK !!!!!!!

you not telling me anything i did not already know and it frees up more then a port for amperage when using a seperate PSU is prevents you from tosting the port as well

Excellent video. However, what you say about drawing power from a Mac Mini isn't quite accurate. Most macs, which this device is designed for, have Thunderbolt ports. A Thunderbolt 4 port, in a Mac Mini M2, has the capability of providing up to 100 watts of power. That equates to 20 amps, assuming 5 volts coming out of the Thunderbolt port. Now, if you were using this in a traditional USB-C 3.1 port, then yes, the power requirements can be stressful on the computer. But if plugging into a Mac Mini with Thunderbolt ports, there's no way you're going to draw too much power. No matter how many things are plugged into the Qwiizlab doc. You might over power the Qwiizlab, but you're not going to hurt the mac mini or any computer using a Thunderbolt port.
And also, the read speed ARE in Mega BYTES; NOT Mega BITS. There's 8 bits in a byte. So when a USB 3.0 / 3.1 port can do 5gbps, (Giga BITS), the max speed read would be 630MBps (Mega BYTES).

ok pal here is how it works thunder bolt is for thunderboltl devices only and provids power for thunderbolt when its sees one, how ever if your device is not thunderbolt then your 100 watt theroy just got craped on because thunder bolt is only enguaged on the system when it sees a thunderbolt drive other wise for non thunderbolt devices it can only and will only provied power enough for the non thunderbolt devices and yes this includes all devices that are not thunderbolt and very ver people can even afford thunderbolt docks which also tend to be power docks as well. thunderbolt drives come powerd and unpowered as well.
all docks and hubs that are not thunderbolt the computer treats them as such and is not able to supply your 100 watts to them.
i also used to have the Quizlab hub and it is not thunderbolt and it must use a seperate 3 to 5 amp power suppply to run properly power it from the usb a to cable does not work properly as the amperage its uner 1000 Mah or 1 amp .. for the whole mb/s and mbp/s thing who gives a crap on the terms point is they sound the same and we all FK up on the terms at times so take your gramer cop crap and go bug some one thats cares about it.. , Also I have many videos with proof on all this loaded up junk into hubs and how things are affected and when they are affected but you missed thoes.
Also tell this same story to others that used the wrong hubs and blew the ports in their macs and PCs iam sure they would love to hear from you as well as all the licenced techs that had to to deal with the repairs and still do .. I have also been Both and Apple and PC tech for well over 30 years now. but i have been into electonics and design work far longer then that. have a great day to .

yes as long as it has the right plug ins in fact 5amp is better but 4 amps will help a lot it still does not mean tho that you can plug all the ports up at once but you'll have plenty of power to run your stuff properly with out causing any damage to anything

Quite correct. Also a lot of his statements are incorrect for instance the Hagibis equivalent of this dock which is in fact identical except for logo is intended to have a separate power supply fitted to USBC (B) port it clearly states this on the instructions on the Hagibis webpage.
