      @@MidwinterMinis Well the GW version is hands down the best version of it I've seen so far - especially when painted - I love the colors you chose, and the "reverse zenithal" thing you did with the spray primer.

      @@darrenp9454 it's probably a alumni of the feature from the early issues of White Dwarf (back when it was an rpg magazine primarily for D&D). I think it was called the Fiend Factory, and some of the best critters from that were published in the AD&D supplement, the Fiend Folio.

    this turned out awesome, love the fact you went with a kinda drab color scheme rather than the bright popping one GW shows, yours makes a lot more sense for a bug living in the dark/underground, and while i won't be painting this exact mini, it does give me a lot of idea's for similar things. keep up the awesome tutorials!

    Brilliant video especially as I got my Ambull yesterday and took several hours to scratch my brain and work out where the lair is, what the counters are for and just generally where he appears from or how he gets started, well sort of, but now thanks millions to you two, I can crack on and get him painted.
    Also a million of thanks for doing something that I have never seen before, a cross reference of paint used from Citadel to Army Paints.. I have the full range of Army Paints and seeing your list is a breath of fresh air, so many many thanks for making life so much more easier, as I usually guess wrong when deciding the similarity from Citadel.

  • @Mellonote
    @Mellonote 5 років тому +1

    Ah man, there has to be a better way to do the highlights. The model looks awesome after the wash, everything has a cool natural gradient to it, but then the highlights are really bold on top of that and, personally, cheapens it a bit. Is there a better, equally as quick method so make the highlights blend in on top?

    • @MidwinterMinis
      @MidwinterMinis  5 років тому

      Yeah, it's a little comic-booky. There are lots of ways you could keep it natural. You could do the same process but twice, with the first step being the flesh colour, then just use the pale flesh mix as a final highlight. Or you could use a small drybrush and just pick out areas you want after the wash stage.

      though i don't paint mini's currently, i do know that some people do the same highlight process shown here, but thin the paint way more so it's less opaque, then they just do two layers of the thinned paint (the second layer covering less than the first) to transition it better.

      Midwinter Minis Oh yes, this goes waaaay back into the nineties for me with bootleg vhs of the ova and hand me down manga, it’s such a cool story and the fact that Mark Hamill was a feature in the first live action and the fantastic David Hayter in the second film, it surprises me more people haven’t heard of it. If you think the costumes were maybe bleh and too power rangeresq, there’s a guy who is a Guyver super fan that’s been running a website called bioweapons.com since the floppy disk age (I can’t believe he’s had the domain without issue so long) who did amazing Guyver armor. Also, if you got ahold of one of the awesome looking Guyver model kits from way back and tossed it up on the channel I’d love you forever!

    It’s awesome how everyone can see something different in the ambull. Different hulking creatures or large machine.
    I personally find it reminiscent of gargantuas from the first Half-life.
    Who in my humble opinion were one of the scariest video game enemies.

    This was the first video I watched from your channel, the first few minutes I was surprised by the "crude" way of painting, and, to be honest, I was not impressed, but when you used the washes....oh my god, what a surprise! Beautifully painted model, good job! An eye opener on "painting strategy"! (and I looked at the musculaaaarityyyy, too....)

    Thumbs up for the Gyver references. As the Ambull is pretty much a straight copy of the D&D Umber Hulk; the brownish look is spot on :D The finished mini looks great.

    I think the only think i would do differently is using really glossy black paint on the mandibles and claws, as well as a gloss coat for some of the other areas; gives it that smooth and slight wet bug feel. but all in all, that was beautifully executed

    I don't have enough positive to say about the color scheme, or to be more specific the why of the color scheme. The termite themed idea is not only a great way to come up with something that works, make sense, all that cool stuff, but, most importantly looks (expletive deleted) good! Hats off good sir and thank you, also agree there needs to be a Nyd army in this scheme yesterday!

    Just did my first model. Your tutorial really helped getting started. A bit rough on the edges but it's pretty good.
    When I added the wash a bit paint for the legs was still wet so the front chest was smeared with wash+paint. Panicked thinking I fucked it up but when it dried it looked like the front was smeared with dried blood.worked really well. Thanks so much for the help!
