- With so much emotion surrounding funerals, it’s easy to see why people simply avoid thinking about them and continue to believe in certain misunderstandings about the process. What have we gotten wrong?

Oh, they did that where I lived as a child. It was a cemetery, then a park, and then finally a neighborhood. My parents didn't tell me till after we moved and I was mostly grown. I thought they were telling a tale, so I looked up city records. They weren't kidding.😮
SF displaced almost all its graves to Colma. Some were left behind. Under the greens in the golf course in the presidio, there are silent friends waiting there for the zombie apocalypse.
Now there's a reference I didn't expect to see.
Ask A Mortician here on YT really helped me get educated on death services and how to avoid the worst kinds of people in that industry. I still need to sort my legal paperwork but I am part of a death co-op of sorts to help my family keeps costs down when my time comes. They also get a regular email to update about my wishes.

LOVE Caitlin Doughty! I highly recommend her books too, you can find great audio versions if you're into that and they're relatively short but jam-packed with wonderful things and information. I've given them as gifts on multiple occasions.

For my maternal grandparents’ funerals we didn’t wear black, my grandmother was a seamstress and so we all wore bright colours to remember her love of colour and fun clothes. 10 years later for my grandfather’s funeral we wore whatever we felt was appropriate my Mum wore one of Grandma’s old dresses that grandma had made for herself with bright orange and red on it.
I never would have thought that cremated people couldn't have funerals. The last one I was at (technically a celebration of life) had the urn and some photos of the person when they were in good health framed and put on a table next to it. I thought that was a good way to do it. Then you could remember the person at their best, instead than seeing a rather creepy made up version.
I also love the idea of wearing the person's favourite colour to their funeral/memorial, even if it's a darker shade, or a small accessory.
Hi. Former mortuary transporter/cremation tech. We ran a Chevy Venture and 2 Town and Countries to do pickups immediately after death.
If we ever had to go out of state to pick up or drop off, we just rented from Enterprise, to limit the wear and tear on our vans. It was 50/50 whether the decedent was in a casket or just on a gurney under a sheet
I'm being donated to medical science. You can do that so med students have opportunities to learn from the use of a real body . I absolutely love the science and the entire systems that our bodies are capable of doing and the illnesses we have or how our bodies functions in ways we are still learning about its a way to help I feel if your unable to be a donor and want to do something also you'll be cremated and sent back to family after done being spliced and diced and sewed up and cut open and labs and whatever else they are learning at that time it's great for whoever feels they can do it also it's zero cost to family they pick body up and mail you back so it cool if you don't want services like me I don't need family and friends to say goodbye or cry for me at a service that is costly and just plain financially stupid the people who knew me can grieve in their own way for in their hearts that's good for me. 😊
Please look into the details and do that paperwork ASAP. I found out , too late, that my Mom’s body wasn’t being donated as she wanted, because you had to make the arrangements with the hospital ahead of time of death, so they were ready to pick her up. We didn’t know which day she’d die, so it didn’t happen.😢 Rest in Peace Mom. I’m sorry science didn’t get to learn and teach from your illnesses. 🙏🏼
You might want to research that a bit more. There was a huge scandal a while back about how unregulated that is. Some bodies are used for military testing, some are sold part by part, some are used as props/decoration, sometimes they didn't even send the right ashes to the right family(Or mixed ashes).
We have a body farm for our local university in our relatively small town and it was a huge deal when they first proposed it (years of voting and legislation) but it's so, so cool and important! While, yes, there's a ton of logistical red tape when donating your body (as with all things), it's really awesome that you're doing this and, on behalf of all the humans who will benefit from it, thank you!

In most states, cars participating in a funeral precession are the only situation in which the hazard lights may be used in motion. So if starts raining, keep the hazards off, unless you're dead.
Also in most states it's not illegal to pass a funeral procession. I've had people try to block me in on the highway when trying to pass one. When I die just cremate me and whoever gets to the bar first gets my last 10 bucks
My local undertaker uses ford transits he can get 6 coffins in the back, my daughter use to be an embalmer. It was all so used for delivering head stones , curbs and the occasional furniture delivery as well
The last memorial service I attended was in a bar. My friend had already been cremated, and he was present in his Star Trek themed urn.
For my stepfather’s funeral, everyone wore Hawaiian shirts because he loved them.
Got curious, so looked up the difference between a memorial and a wake, and apparently, it's mostly in how long it lasts, with wakes being able to last days while memorials generally last hours.
From what I can gather, it used to be an over-night vigil sort of thing -- staying awake and praying and whatnot -- and became more of a social gathering to mourn the dead; sometimes by imbibing copious amounts of alcohol.

My husband and I met at a mutual friend’s funeral.
Because we did here are the lessons we’ve learned. The funeral industry is like the wedding industry. They take advantage of your emotions and try to upsell you useless upgrades. Just like weddings there are traditions but there’s no law saying you have to follow them.
If you have a specific want for your funeral please communicate it and have it written down. I personally want people wearing whatever they feel comfortable and telling bad jokes at my funeral.
If you can afford it, get life insurance. Not just for funeral expenses but bills and expenses you might leave behind. My husband and I both have enough life insurance to pay off the mortgage should the unfortunate happen. One bill off our plate.
On the point about it being legal to be buried in your own back yard: There's one funeral director here in Norway that is active on TikTok. I think it was last month or so that he made a video answering someone asking if it was legal to be buried in your own yard, but it turns out no, it's not legal here. He also added: How would you like it if the house you bought came with a yard where someone was buried?

4:53 This one I knew. My father passed and was cremated. We held two memorials and he was at both, in his little polished mahogany apartment.
Misconception-Water cremation effluent is like "porridge." Nope. It's a nutrient rich LIQUID (porridge is chunky). And, you still get back bone powder (brighter white and soft than flame ash).

The macerator that they put the chremains in is like a giant metal coffee grinder w dull blades. Very strong motors.
I no longer want to ever ride in a mini van after I saw my brother's body picked up in one. Also, we discovered how much it was for a casket from the funeral home when he died and when my Mama passed away last month we ordered one from Costco instead. It was much cheaper. Plus, if you have an executive membership you get 2% back.

I've told my wife I want my funeral to be jeans and a t-shirt casual. I only wear suits to funerals and weddings. They just aren't part of my life. So why should they be part of my death?

o She looked EXACTLY like what I would have imagined someone of that position to look like in a spooky film, she was rather pale, sickly, wore dark colors, and was noticeably detached person.
x In the film Terminator 3 (2003), Sarah Connor's casket is used as a weapons stash.
x I was told (when I was younger) that caskets are covered by cement in order to prevent grave robbers from stealing items.
x One of the most famous coffins is Snow White's Glass Coffin in the Disney film.
x There used to be candy that came in a plastic coffin called Mr. Bones.
x Some of my classmates moved into a house that was part a funeral home and tried to hide in one of the caskets.
o At the time, the caskets locked shut from the outside so they said you should never pull the door shut on you!

PSYCHOLOGY SECTION!
x I used to work with a nurse who was terrified of dead bodies (the decomposition aspect of dead bodies freaked her out) and would do just about everything to avoid them.
o Unfortunately there is no guarantee that patients don't die on nurses!
x A common psychological disorder I encountered working with the elderly is Cotard's syndrome AKA Walking Corpse syndrome.
o Patients would ask me "Am I dead?"
o I experienced that temporarily years after watching the tv series Lost.

x In 2002, there was a case in Noble, Georgia where the crematorium was not incinerating the bodies (because the incinerator was temporarily broken) and was instead giving back customers back non-human material (instead of the ashes of the bodies).
x In ancient Egypt, being an embalmer was a big deal!
x Somewhere...I don't remember where (urban legend?)...there was a story of a woman that went missing after partying and was later declared dead.
o She ended up going to her own funeral and said it was "a great experience."
x An excellent funeral film is Bernie (2011)!
o The speeches that Bernie (Jack Black) gives about the deceased are comical, very euphemistic!
x In the music video "Anti-Hero" by Taylor Swift, Taylor Swift's will states that her children get "13 cents."
o In the video, the photo wtih all the cats is funny because it is meant to be an outrageous amount of cats...there are probably five times as many cats in the community around me!
x One of the most famous wills is on the film Brewster's Millions (1985).
x Another great film is Double Indemnity (1944)!
o "Double indemnity" refers to "a clause providing for the payment of double the policy's face value in the event of the policy holder's accidental death" (Collins Dictionary).
x I bury the dead animals from the street on a plot of land that my family owns.
o I have a "paddy wagon," which is actually a Radio-Flyer wagon that I transport them to the land.
o I try to give a funeral speech every time, but it is hard to say anything too sincere about squirrels or birds that I have never hung out with.
o It can't be considered a pet cementery because the animals are not pets (that I am aware of).
x Speaking of the cementaries...
o I used to have some type of "graveyard shift" disorder where, even though I was not working the graveyard shift, there was no way I could get to sleep before six o'clock in the morning (wasn't able to for around six months!).
o There is an allegedly haunted cementery near Doane University where students would play hang out at night and use a Ouija board.
o In some versions of Dr. Frankenstein, he digs up graves to gather body parts for the practice of vivisection.
o As part of the "Evil Child" genre, the film The Omen (1976) has what some call "the greatest cementery scene in all of horror film history."
o In the film The Premature Burial, Guy Carrell (Ray Milland) creates all types of crazy contraptions and escape routes because he thinks that generations of his ancestry had been buried alive.
† Years ago, some websites claimed that being buried alive was the #1 worst way to die (according to respondents).
x Is it inappropriate to wear a Grim Reaper costume to the funeral? JK
x In the film Wedding Crashers (2005), they dress up in black and try to pick up women at funerals (Funeral Crashers as a sequel?).
x In films, it seems like everyone is wearing black at funerals.
o Having the camera watch black-claded members of a funeral at a distance is considered to be a Hollywood cliché.
x According to REACT, there are still professional mourners today.
x I have heard of funeral themes where the deceased wants the funeral to be like a party.
o The idea is that they want others to celebrate life even after another's death.

What an excellent listing! Well done! I was a nurse and can confirm the fact about nurses scared of dead bodies. They suddenly became really busy somewhere else. The current practice of a concrete or metal vault to place the casket in, seems like a ploy for more money. Especially in the age of green burials. I like the Celebration of Life idea, but I call it a party! 😂 How about a costume party memorial service?😂😂😂

Yes I am a mortuary transport driver, but I look like an unassuming suburban mom lol. ( We charge more for use of the hearse) , it is an option....
I have a friend who works at a mortuary. Most of that money goes straight to the owner which these days is turning more and more corporate.
Every funeral that I’ve been to people dressed as if it was just another day. Bright colors were born a lot.
Give my knees to the needy, my feet to the footloose, my nose to the nosey, my hands to the handy...as if anybody were going to want whatever is left when I'm done with it. Just don't spend any money on it.

I’ve been to a few funerals in my life. Though, I do find this video interesting.

I opted for a natural eco burial. This is where basically I will be placed into a hemp sack, buried, and I will have a mulberry tree planted over my body.
That way, visitors can enjoy the fruits of my decomposition, so to speak.
There will be no gravestone, rather just a GPS marker that visitors can locate with a finder. No manicured cemetery, just a natural field.
Besides, embalming fluids that contain arsenic are terrible for the environment.
These are not available in every state, so check your local laws before you make any plans.

Your misconception of " You can't have a funeral for someone who's already been cremated" is literally incorrect, plus you contradict it right away with your logistics piece that follows. Its not a misconception, a *_funeral_* explicitly refers to the body being present at the service! If the body is not present or it has already been cremated the formal ceremony it is called a memorial service or memorial mass.
