From what I understand, the Y2K bug fears were because of legacy code that was never fixed (didn't think accurate time keeping was important for computers with a couple bytes of data) and they continued to build on top of that code, which would lead to a time overflow bug.
Yeah they were storing year as 2 digits basically, so after 99 it would become 00 and systems would assume it meant 1900 instead of 2000. There's a similar bug with 32-bit systems called the year 2038 problem, but with the move to 64-bit systems we've mostly worked around it.
It's a bit more than that. There were standards for accurate time keeping, and unix based systems had widely adopted the unix epoch time standard. The problem is that early on developers saved system resources by only storing the last two values for the year. This meant that the year 2000 would technically be the year 1900 to the computer. In reality though, this was an overblown problem. There were actually a few systems that got impacted by the Y2K bug but the most that happened was a few ticket machines gave the wrong date and hospitals gave the wrong estimates for health predictions. Fun fact though, GPS already went through a Y2K equivalent where it had a stack overflow for timing and likewise you only had a few instances of ticket machines giving out tickets with the wrong date.
It would have taken the tiniest bit of research to find out how much problems were actually found when some of these computer systems were rolled forward to December 31st 1999 at 11:59 p.m. Some of us spent months updating and testing computer systems.
the full scare was how certain analog systems would react. which was probably made up. they did not want a positive bit getting sent to stuff as some kind of fail to condition when the digital counters went zero. the banking thing, as you said was worked on for months to insure the global accounting system kept goin
A sad casualty of the culture wars of the last 10-15 years is the notion that other people can be competent at what they do (caugh caugh star trek). The answer to both "Y2K was overblown" and "whatever happened to the ozone layer panic?" is that they fixed it. Smart competent people working together fixed it.
@@mortenaronsen this is an extremely childish perspective. Competency has gone down globally and is going down, so if what you are describing is in fact true (it probably isn't), it is a very frightening and bad thing. What is far more likely is that all the "very smart" people were wrong.
@@fatsurprise7892 Ok fattie, I'll engage. What I was "describing" was an increased inability to see others as competent, congratulations you proved my point. Oh, and James Lindsay wants his "very smart people" meme back, you are using it wrong.
Colin from 2016 absolutely would push back against this ideology in games. But, 2024 Colin is calling people brain rot for pushing back against Intergalatic: The Bla bla bla. Elon literaly said a while ago that he wants to make an everything app, inspired by that chineese one. Noone should be surprised or doubting where X is heading

Funny. Seems YT really did not like this stream. It nuked chat history and also muted the part where you played that song. Guess it's a.... sensitive topic :P
I don't know much about crypto, but I'm guessing a few tech bros have coins setup already, and just wait for some meme or other viral trend to show up so they can quickly slap a name on it and send it out. It's kind of like having a bunch of empty boxes ready to go, and just needing to print off meme packaging before putting them up for sale. Of course, the box doesn't have to be filled with anything.
Talking about _GTA 10_ when at a rate of once a decade it'll release ~207X. Somehow, I expect the gaming landscape to look a little different in a half century.
The Y2K thing was *completely* real, however they knew it was gonna happen for years and millions of dollars and hundreds of thousands of man hours were put in to fix the issue and avert it. It was just one of those things where the issue was fixed so well people started gaslighting themselves into thinking there was never an issue.
Everybody _knows_ the government is incompetent. Of course, most of the worries about Y2K were for corporate computers. Strange how JP Morgan was willing to spend money preventing their business from exploding in their face.
Yep. What's just as bad is the sidescrollers seem to have kept all the money from their version of the game awards instead of donating it. Just like the completionist did.
I don't see wokeness ruining GTA 6's success at all. However, considering the state of AAA games, especially more woke ones, I expect it to not run very well on launch. I'm guessing the game journos will find stories of crunch, kinda like RDR2, and that will generate many online complaints from the anti-capitalism crowd. Once again, though, the game will easily make $1 billion faster than GTA V.
I disagree with the panel on GTA VI. If that game has a bunch of nonsense in it a lot of people might buy it but if it has enough of it in the game that game will surely become a failure.
Where was all that money from the sidescrollers game awards donated to? It seems nobody can find any record of the donations, and that they pocketed the money. I really hope I'm wrong but it's starting to appear as if they just kept the money for themselves. Such a shame that they seem to be doing the exact same thing the completionist was caught doing. Shady as ***k
Yeah… you don’t know what you’re talking about. There is no charity, and there were no donations. People paid for and received a voting membership. That’s a purchase, not a donation. And side scrollers has every right to pocket their own money received from such transactions; this isn’t a charity. It in no way is comparable in appearance to the Completionist’s little scam; in fact it has nothing in common with it at all. The only thing shady as f*** is a Moeron on the internet repeating this nonsense on yet another video…

Happy New Years my fellow normal men!
Happy New Year!

Suicide Squad as a PS+ bonus, almost feels like Sony getting people back for the Concord failure.
Blabs and Melee are, in fact, demure. Classy, understated and genuine.
I'm kind of sad that Cobra Kai has become a parody of itself. That first couple of seasons played it so straight.
Blabs how could you miss The 7th Guest??? You had one job... 😆
Great stream. Now go eat a sandwich and take a nap so you can get up and start the new year right.
I'm waiting for Put Put 30th anniversary remake with full Ray and Path Tracing
First Mega 64 vid I saw was the Shenmue one they did
Couldn't pay me to play Suicide Squad
Gnolls are literally chaos monsters born feom corpses, can they even choose to be either villainous or virtuous?
