I played drums in a 80’s cover band several years back. Our keyboardist had the OB8 and we performed 1984, Jump, Tom Sawyer among others. I found a whole level of respect for these machines, their caretakers and inventors. It really made our show authentic. Thank you for what you do. These babies are time capsules and hopefully their truth will shine on to the younger generations to realize it’s not about zeros and ones. Every time I hear 1984 I feel OUR creator.
The OB-Xa was Eddie’s favourite keyboard back in the day, so consider your taste in keyboards validated. ;) The old OB series had what I consider to be the fullest, deepest and beefiest sounds of any synth, even to this day.
I remember as a tween of the 80's, all the "olde brigade" tearing down the music of the time. "Oh synthesisers were the end of musicians." Obviously it didn't. I did not understand music as I do now. I would given them a mouthful. Respect to you & fellow performers. No matter how music evolves it will still be an art. Sad part is art revenue will be firmly in the hands of record/song sales as within the decade. I'm certain that AI is going to play a more leading role in music of that zeitgeist. Children born now will have a far different future than us.
That room is filled with treasures AND all in working condition. Really a fortune. Apart from that, the fact that you know how to use them and use their potential is priceless!
@@symbiat0I hope the synths don't go belly up due to failing irreplaceable components, these synths use a lot of proprietary components, that if they fail are lethal. I have sold of a lot of my old (nineties) goodies and replaced them with VST's. Now I sleep a lot better.
The 80s was a great time for musical experimentation started in the the late 70s with the arrival of new wave , and went on through the following decade lots of great groups and individuals , i miss that time period it was part of your growing up .
Amazing recreations, you make it look so easy, but I wish I had 10% of your talent. It shows how talented the original writers were to come up with those melodies and all the tunes within the tunes
There were top tier studio pros playing on Madonna's 80s stuff. Bass player Guy Pratt said on his YT channel that Madonna was actively trying to stop them from putting jazz licks in her songs, but missed the Weather Report groove he played on "Like A Prayer". Heh.
@@ischmidt Great story! Legend has it that guitar great Dann Huff heard "Like a Prayer" and loved the funky guitar in the chorus, totally forgetting that it was him playing on that session. Don't know if it's true or not, but it's conceivable since the in-demand players were constantly going from session to session in those days.
@@toddtyler I can believe that. Studio guitarist Tim Pierce has said on his channel that there were days where he'd play on 5 different sessions at different studios all over LA. Every time he got home the phone would ring again. The 80s were nuts.
It's crazy how music is able to conserve memories of lighthearted childhood. Yes there was Chernobyl, the cold war and many other things but listening to 'Into the Groove' for example, brings me back to a wonderful vacation with my parents in Italy.Lot of fun at the beach and playing video games at the Arcades. Thank you for bringing back those memories. Your skills are amazing. I love the 'graphic' design of Oberheim. The blue lines are so nice to look at. It's my favourite (beside the Emulator II)
Well I own a set of Roland synth and samplers made today, and no matter what Audiopilz says, they can still create greatness. For instance the Juno X and Jupiter X are to die for. Their Zencore engines are cool.
You know, it’s these 80’s synth tunes that stick in your head the rest of the day. Also - Go West! We Close Our Eyes came on the other day and I thought it would be great to hear your interpretation of that one.
I recognized MOST of these songs... sure brought back some great memories. Hope you'll publish longer versions of these songs. The instrumental versions would be awesome to listen or even sing to.
This reminds me so much of the time, as a teenager, I went into the hangar of my friend's dad, who worked in the sound and light business. I played through some settings on a keyboard that was just out, and I found the exact sound they used on a Madonna song from her album Hard Candy. I was so shocked and hyped. That must be such a thrill to go through all the settings of your collection to find the exact sound.

That was so awesome Luke, really liked the Madonna bass chops there. Mr Crowley was an inspired choice, I know it backwards - brought a tear to my eye as we just buried my friend yesterday who was an Ozzy fan, he used to get me to play it on my synths. Keep sharing these videos, awesome!

The execution of analog and digital synthesizers, there you can even see manufacturing in the 70's, avant-garde of famous bands of the 80's, had in their musical and instrumental framework and that made a legend in music even in these last times, and the spectacular synthesized voice, very good and magical for such skilled hands, congratulations.
When he played Do Ya Wonna Funk With Me took me to the scene on the movie Trading Places when Eddie Murphy played as Valentine and he invited his freeloading friends over for a party and this song was playing.Great memorie lane.

Watching your video's gave me the inspiration to go for it and have since started lessons. Thank you Luke for being the inspiration to get me started on my journey.
I love these vids. Every time I watch them - I feel I must get my Yamaha DX7 down from the loft. It's been up there for probably 10 years (in its cover) I have read it will need new capacitors fitting due to its age.
I love these videos so much! You are very talented and it is so cool to see so many different synthesizers with different sounds. I hope you do a 90s one of these. I'd love to hear a recreation of my favorite Billy Joel song All for Leyna.
