Yea just go for a electrical license and start a business it’s way easier than go for a master I after waste many years getting ready for a masters that got less value than a gc license
Thank you! It is a great day when you take it to the next level. It's definitely not for everyone so it's good to have some advice of others that have done it. I was blessed to have a business-minded father that taught me a lot growing up.
I started with a pretty large contractor here in Georgia and completed an 8000 hr apprenticeship program, while working for said large company I realized that I wanted to start my own business around my local area. So I left the larger company and went to work with a smaller company in my area to try and learn the business side and continuing to progress in the trade. Any advice you could give to someone like myself? Thanks in advance!!

Noticed in the last 3 years or so alot of electrical contractors in my area are going into general contracting business also. Not sure if that's a good or bad sign. I'm a union electrician looking to break off on my own and trying to figure out if should start out contracting work/electrical
@@The360Electrician louisiana. Looked into being a signatory contractor with union few years back. About 25k just to get started. Who has that starting out

Only you can decide which side of the grass is greener. Remember it's the side you water, meaning the one you work on. If you are the 9 to 5 security first guy then Union, if your more of a risk taker and want to be a contractor then trade school. Union will also teach you, check out my buddy @madelectrician on youtube.
Sorry but I understand you saying do not attach your name but I have to disagree. I have been an electrical contractor now going on over 46 years. In my opinion using your name means you are willing to risk your name, also thus you will make sure that the work standards is linked to it. If you did a shitty job or someone that works for you did, you own up to it and make it rite even if it costs you some extra money 99% of customers will appreciate it and call you back and pass your good business ethics on to others thus more customers. Do not hide behind a name there is no reason for it. One last thing, if you are a young journeyman that really wishes to become a contractor and own your own business this may be hard but try to find some old existing electrical contractor that is up there in age or has been around for a while. Give him or her a call and ask if they have been thinking at all about selling there company and retiring or semi retiring in the future. If so work for them for a while and buy the company from them. Ask about sweat equity plus give some cash money up front to show you a serious, mainly because in the deal you will get all the tools, equipment, trucks, lifts etc. That may have taken them years to acquire. Most of all you get the the already set customer base and word of mouth that has most likely taken years to establish. If you want then after you are up a running good, you can always change the name to what you want. Anyways this is just a little input from a 64 year old electrician.
Well said and a great counter opinion. All the reasons for standing behind your work and owning up should be true name or no name attached. Otherwise they may want to go to plumbing school where crap is part of the job..j/k . There are a ton of multi million dollar businesses that originally attached a name to the business, you will have to choose which is best for you and in the city or town you live in. Buying an established business or at least the phone number is a great idea. Thanks for sharing your wisdom.
What program do you use for estimating? And is there one that’s best for residential? I’m a new electrical contractor in New York trying to figure it all out
There really isn't a good program. I think I did a short bidding video that explains how I bid most of the time. You can either do hourly + parts or fixed contract which is what we do.
Moses Rosendin would disagree on naming an EC after yourself. On the other hand, I am a 3rd generation electrical contractor, and my grandfather thought using your name was bad luck.
It really depends on where you are, who you are, and what kind of business you see yourself having in say 10 or 20 years. Small towns may be different than big cities. Ultimately the person opening the business has to decide. (I agree with your Grandfather)
It's not all bad. If your in a small town there could be some benifits over a generic name. In the end it's only my humble opinion, you know beeter then I what works best in your area. Just don't get into the trap of being the business, remember you own it it doesn't own you. What state are you in?
Sure you can do weekend jobs and after hours, freinds and family etc. You would still need a contractors liscense in most states. Some let you work as a "handy man" but limit the dollar amount you can charge. Check your local requirments.
@@stanmoney8470 That sounds right, in Montana where we are getting another lic. you have to be a master electrician to get a masters contractor lic, if you are only doing resi you can get a journeyman contractor lic but you have to be a journeyman. Hey Ethan, thanks for the comment and supporting the channel. I think Boston like LA is a hard city to do business in. That's the only thing you should be scared of. Make sure you get the legal set up right! After that stay within budget. Here is the order I would think about. It's only mu opinion based on my market, yours may be a lot different. Adapt anyway you see fit. There are no guarantees in life, but you can steer the ship in the direction you want. 1. Get your business Info ready. I have a video about that. Name , phone website etc. 2. Get your Electrical License. 3. Get your biz lic. Maybe incorporate if you have the $$ other wise do sole proprietor but get General liability insurance. 4. Don't buy anything yet, use what you have if you can and while you are doing all this start finding a few jobs to "jump start" your income. line up jobs anyway you can. Call some vendors (see another one of my video on the upside down pyramid marketing, step one" 5. Make sure you have family or friends that support you and will refer you not just give you lip service. 6. When you do a job and you have a happy customer, ask for referrals. 7. Keep blasting your business on facebook and get listed on google maps. It takes 6 months to a year before you get repeat calls so hang in there. Be honest and stand behind your work. Be clean and neat, stand out from the competition and promote how you are not like every other electrician. Go for it and pay it forward when you succeed!
i honestly appreciate that my options are i become a project manger with the company my family has instead of there in house electrician (i use his insurance) which is a fat promotion with pay boast and a truck lol but i dont want stop wiring cause i love it. gonna have to think hard on it but i definitely gotta get general liability and all the legal stuff tie with a bow... and my name dont have yet but thanks again for the reply
