He is no doubt the best drummer in the world technically. He does so many things that one on has done before on the instrument. Extreme limb independence. Utterly astounding some of it. This doesn't mean he's a great session guy or a good fit in popular music. Think he operates on too high a plane.

Yesterday somehow the song "Voice of reason" came into my "flow" playlist in Deezer. The music directly hit me. I did not know the name "Virgil Donati", so did not knew if he would be a guitar player, drummer or other musician. I guessed he's not a singer although ;-) I was riding in my car and took a photo, from the centerstack displaying the title, while driving to remember the title so I can later look up this musician. The song really touched me. I like when music is not boring and there is something happening and there is a change in the music as well. What really struck me with this song was the drumming. That was absolutely stunning, although the other musicians like bass and guitar player and everybody are also great musicians, that was clear. But I thought maybe Virgil could be the drummer, because that somehow stood out to me. You do not often hear that kind of super interesting and inspired drumming. Now back from my trip I immediately locked up the name and I was right and now I'm on your channel here. I was not aware that you have also been playing drums with Tribal Tech, which I also love. I'll check out your other music now! Hope to be able to see you live some day! :-D

I work as a photographer in my real life. But nothing is more wonderful than seeing a musician, such as Virgil, push himself and create something endearing such as his music. I absolutely love his solo disc and it's a great feeling as fans that we get to bask in his creations. Thanks Virgil!

In my humble opinion Virgil is a musical genius. To play drums at the level that he does, which is beyond human, and play piano and compose music on top of that is just unreal... I think we can regard ourselves lucky that we live in a time when we can see and hear him at work, demonstrating his unique craftsmanship.

  • @AndyPutt1

Virgil is not only a virtuoso on the drumset but one of the nicest and (given his talent and standing) most down to earth people I've ever met. FOr example I remember 20 years ago him just walking in the front door of Dallas Brookes Hall in Melbourne Ultimate Drummers Day.. said hello to me and was perfectly happy to stand and chat casually with everyone in the foyer etc.
Virgil will go down in history as one of the pioneers. But who knows what is yet to come from Virgil too!!!

There are so many amazing musicians on this album, I can't believe I completely missed this being released. Where do people get news on music like this? I mostly rely on twitter but it's easy to miss things if I don't go on for a few days.
Anyway, ordered! Judging from this video, the music on this album sounds incredible. Some of what's featured in the clips sounds a lot like Planet X but that just shows what a big part Virgil had in that band. And this sounds like some of the tightest drumming I've heard from him.

I remember the first time seeing Virgil drum, this was many years ago, here in Melbourne when he was in a band called Southern Sons.. yes, that long ago!! I could tell he was an amazing drummer just by the way he played..few months later got to see an instructional video of his and was totally blown away!! He was amazing back then, now he's just on a different level..

Ray Rath seriously? I feel they're so different... Which is why Vergil would be able to bring some fresh air (which would do so much good to them). Mangini is a beast but i feel like he was the closer one to Portnoy's style... In other words, they just played it safe.
