The Bible that they want you to swear on contains a passage that instructs believers to never swear any oaths. Highly intelligent man. You can watch how his comedy morphed throughout his career. The older he got the more philosophical his comedy was. Greatest thing about him though was that he could almost convince you of his opinions. At the very least he would make you question what you truly believe. RIP George.
If ya can't logically refute his points than (if you're a logical person) ya shouldn't be 'almost' convinced. If you can great. I'd like to hear 'em. If you can't.... just admit he made good points and change your beliefs accordingly. Easier said than done but ideally that's what would happen.
George became the philosopher king of comedy over time. He was fearless and unapologetic, and used his forum to say things in the context of comedy that said elsewhere would have seen a swift and mighty backlash. Might be interesting if you reacted to some of his early career performances that were more conventional for the time. Another comedy rec, if you haven't seen it, is Abbott and Costello's classic Who's On First, routine. Often considered one of the greatest of all time. The 1953 Retired Actors Home performance is probably best, if so.

My understanding is that back in the day the Bible was seen as the Truth so people would swear on a Bible mostly in court. But Jesus says not to swear at all Matthew 5:33-37. And James backs this up in his epistle. James 5:12.
Rights are the greatest trick of government. By defining what rights you do have, they are also defining what rights you don't have. Rather then being told not to do something, they just omit it from the list of things you can do.
Well, someone has to have information about what is not acceptable behavior. The Rights that are said to come from God (at least here in America) are those that (although universal or should be) cannot be taken away. What one does not give one cannot take away.

Something to keep in mind about George's talk about having unlimited rights. Exercising your rights carries with it the expectation of accepting the consequences. The world is a giant network of causal relationships. You can't do anything worth mentioning without causing some notable effect, and if we have unlimited rights, that means everyone has unlimited rights, including the right to feel safe. If you think about it like that, we do have unlimited rights.
You would think it should include an acceptance of consequence. You would be surprised how many alleged free-speech advocates actually say the 1st amendment protects everyone from consequences, and not just from the government.
@@JeshuaSquirrel I think that's largely because they've learned that if they raise enough of a fuss, the people around them decide it's not worth it. Persistence is scaled in the wrong direction, especially since these alleged free-speech advocates, like all other forms of trouble in today's society, are ultimately in the minority. They just also happen to be the sort of people that literally have nothing better to do than complain.

During World War II, the United States forcibly relocated and incarcerated at least 125,284 people of Japanese descent in 75 identified incarceration sites. Most lived on the Pacific Coast, in concentration camps in the western interior of the country. Approximately two-thirds of the inmates were United States citizens. These actions were initiated by president Franklin D. Roosevelt via an executive order shortly after Imperial Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor. That´s the Story...
So do Americans just get used to bleeping stuff out? Because as somebody who doesn't have to deal with this back where I live it almost hurts to listen to.
Matthew 5:33-37 "Again, you have heard that it was said to the ancients, ‘Do not break your oath, but fulfill your vows to the Lord. But I tell you not to swear at all: either by heaven, for it is God’s throne; or by the earth, for it is His footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. Nor should you swear by your head, for you cannot make a single hair white or black. Simply let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ Anything more comes from the evil one." -Jesus of Nazereth
"Swear not, neither by heaven nor by earth nor by any other oath, but let your yay be yay and your ney be ney, lest ye fall into condemnation." -somewhere in both James & Matthew. I always thought that made the whole court spiel and the pledge of allegience a little suspect.
It's swearing allegiance to the Bible (especially thou shall not lie). As long as everyone is intelligent enough to stay in their lane without infringing on another lane, we'd be fine. The problem is that generally, we are lacking that intelligence.
Regarding rights, case in point: I thought that all laws that has been passed in this country were chiseled in stone, never to be argued. But, unfortunately, when Roe v Wade was struck down by the Supreme Courts I suddenly became aware that the laws only exists for our benefit as long as there’s more of a liberal court than a conservative one. We have a conservative Supreme Court that has been bought as George puts it “ bought and paid for”
Well it’s always been that way since humans have existed and created the idea of “society” and class people in different sections to deem them what kind of privileges they get.
George's dislike for religion, I believe, was hard fought. In my teens, I bought an album of his called 'Toledo Window Box', in which he goes hard against priests molesting alter boys. This was in the '70s when that sort of thing was still taboo to mention. He never came out and said it, but I believe he was abused as a child and pushed religion away because of it. Of course, I could also be totally wrong.
Speaking about the Japanese-American internment camps. There's at least one famous Japanese-American still living, who was put into the camps with his parents when he was a child - George Takei, who played Lieutenant Sulu in the original Star Trek TV show in the 60s, and reprised the role in several movies in the 80s and early 90s.
It was a different time back in the 40s. I think part of the reason for it was to protect them from the public. After 9-11 look what our arab population had to endure.
@@kens32052 oh pull the other one. The people thrown into those internment camps lost their homes, their businesses, their reputations. If it was for their protection, that wouldn't have happened. Yet somehow many US citizens are even more xenophobic than then.
Opinions aren’t dangerous… Beliefs are. You can have an opinion about anything, but once you start believing then you have committed yourself to that opinion cuz you made it your belief, and something that you believe in is something you can rarely let go of and more than likely will fight and even kill for. Opinions are easy to change, facts or lies change opinions, it’s what beliefs those opinions can lead to that can be dangerous. A belief is a weaponized opinion. I mean isn’t that why our parents always told us not to just believe everything you see and hear?
The hand gesture goes back to when everyone carried a weapon , a sword spear knife etc it proved you could be trusted as you had put down your weapon and therefore weren’t going to attack .
One of the strangest gestures ever is the BELLAMY SALUTE!!! The salute accompanied the PLEDGE of ALLEGIANCE in the U.S. Both the Pledge and the salute originated in 1892. It was much like the Nazi salute and was created by James B. Upham. The pledge had been written by Christian socialist minister, Francis Bellamy. The Bellamy Salute was also known as the "flag salute" during the period when it was used with the Pledge of Allegiance. It was officially replaced by the hand-over-heart salute when Congress amended the Flag Code on December 22, 1942.
Religion does hold us back as a species, it stops people searching for the answers coz they think they have all the answers! A magic man can explain absolutely anything we don't understand!
Just a quick thought... Regarding telling people exactly how to hold their hands when swearing on the Bible.... It's an outward physical demonstration of compliance When a person complies with this initial demand, they are psychologically offering themselves up, or preparing themselves, to tell the truth 🤔
so just an FYI George Carlin passed in 2008 at the age of only 71. I say that as a point of reference because as you can tell he is in his later years during this sketch. Carlin did alot, I mean alot, of research on the topics he talked about. So yea wikipedia had been around alot longer than the 16 years that it would have been when he did this act. But, to be official Wikipedia has been around since January 2001.
I don't think I'm a believer. but I want to believe. But probably didn't take the chance to swear on my mother's grave. Loved my mom. Greetings from Norway. 😀
Raising our right hand in oath is something that dates back many years. The reason why we raise our right hand is because, during Medieval times, the right hand was marked every time someone committed a crime. Therefore, raising their right hand to take an oath would allow the marks to be seen.
I dont understand religious people. " it was made by people claiming it was God!!!!" Yet they believe people saying God exist without even a slither of evidence. Just believing people or a book that was evidently written ages ago. Just amazes me. I understand that the human brain usually have to believe in something when it cant get a logical explanation why something is happening thats why conspiracy theories are popular
Maybe the raising of the right hand and swearing is something that dates back to when England was a part of Scandinavia, when you swear it is making an oath In the early middle age scandinavian cultures, breaking an oath is an unthinkable thing. Those were the worst kinds of people. So it meant something to make an oath breaking it would bring shame upon your entire family, so it is not something that one was likely to do easily. raising the right hand would be indicative of making the oath to Tyr the God that presides over the thing or the court it would be recognizing Tyr sacrifice of his right arm , but that is just a guess it's amazing how things connect that one would think couldn't possibly be related.
Great reaction. Here's some of the best George Carlin bits that will make you die laughing: 1) Advertising Lullaby 2) Airline Announcements 3) Golf courses for the homeless 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
The internment of the Japanese Americans was only done on the West coast. That's not where the majority of Japanese-Americans were living. However, the Japanese-Americans on the west coast were rather affluent given their recent immigration status. That internment was politically motivated by the Democratic party. Most Japanese Americans lived in Hawaii. They represented 25% of the state's population. None of them ever went to internment camps. Wouldn't you think Hawaii was a lot more vulnerable than the West Coast?

The George Carlin took place during a comedy concert that took place during what turned out to be his final comedy tour in 2008, and was videotaped by HBO for his final HBO comedy concert. Later in the tour, Carlin suffered another heart attack, and died in the hospital. He was 71 years old.
George Carlin was bright and even funny but he was an atheist, constantly putting down beliefs. He was right about a lot of things but he created a lot of disbelief. In the end, what was his legacy? He grew up in a Catholic family, went to Catholic school and clashed with nuns. Thus atheism. He's gone now and found out if he was right or wrong. I share a birthday with him but I'm a believer. We were born on a know it all date. Different years. As for wikipedia, I'm online since 1996. I can't recall if it started back then. I remember when I found it, there were a lot of mistakes about everything. Still have some but it was a good idea and evolved nicely. You were very good reacting to Carlin. Your'e a lovely bright and open minded woman. God bless.
"Opinions are such a dangerous thing." YES! That's why it's silly to value opinions. When people say "I have a right to my opinion." I say "you are. You also have a right to use facts, data, logic, and reasoning. All of which are more valuable to yourself and society than your opinion."
Putting your hand on the Bible came from some overly religious whackaloons who thought that if you merely put your hand on that book, somehow you wouldn't lie. Which always cracks me up, because what's going to happen if you lie? George addresses that in this bit, I "believe." Britt, you are a true treasure in today's world. You're a Christian who has an open mind, which is _very_ rare among your folks. You understand nuance; you understand context; you understand humor; you can laugh at yourself. You gained a fan in me. I love how you analyze this stuff-yeah, even the inane stuff I don't really care for. Also, "truth" and "facts" are polar opposites; truth is a "belief," and "facts" are facts. If you want to know about truth, go to your junior college and enroll in a "Philosophy" class. But if you want to know about facts, enroll in the "Journalism" department. And those two classes usually exist on opposite sides of the campus, by the way. Oh, _contraire:_ "numbers" _do_ lie when both women and men use them for their own selfish ends. Hence the often attributed to Mark Twain quote, _"There are lies, damned lies, and statistics."_ No, sis, God _did_ give us the Bill of Rights because God was invoked through that process; the men who gave us those so-called rights invoked "God" when they wrote them. Which begs the question sort of like the "chicken or the egg" gives us: did "God" create man, or did man create God? As for Wikipedia, it's been around for over 20 years, but it could never be taken seriously, especially today, since the CIA currently runs that site. Even the guy who founded Wikipedia has said that he sold Wikipedia to factions that work for the CIA. So, unless you're sourcing Wikipedia for minor stuff, like birth dates of people or basic stuff, it can't be considered a trusted site. Don't trust anything to do with the U.S. State Department, wars, or politics that's written on that site. They've been proven wrong many times and won't take down the debunked stuff they have posted. You said, "Opinion is such a dangerous thing"... and so are "beliefs." Because they're the SAME THING. You keep rocking sis! And I'll keep following your stuff! 🤘
"Just when these citizens needed their rights the most, their government took them away...Rights arent rights if you can take them away." This part just leaves me speechless.
Answering your theological question: This is actually addressed by the U.S. government. Most government scripts will ask if you "swear or affirm". Affirming simply let's your yes be yes because you're just telling them that you told the truth instead of making an oath. I'm in the habit of saying, "I affirm" in legal settings.

The Bible that they want you to swear on contains a passage that instructs believers to never swear any oaths.
James 5:12, KJV: But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation.
Wow. I had forgotten this passage. I’m sorry to say it didn’t occur to me to put two and two together. Thanks for sharing this.
Totally forgot that one, thanks! I made it a point to remember many of the terrible rules from books like Leviticus and Deuteronomy...but completely neglected the others, good eye!
No shock the judges wearing black dresses convincing you to do the exact things you shouldnt.
😂👍
Maybe the best quality about the entire book... There's a line in there somewhere to contradict virtually everything the religious have ever said.
You should hear him abbreviate the ten commandments, it's worth the search!
yes i agree.. 10 becomes like 4.. lol..
The number of reactors to this who didn't know about WWII internment camps does not speak well of the American educational system...
Generally speaking , reactor vids are made by recent generations with little or no knowledge of their own history which is revealed in their comments..with information at our keyboards/phones etc. readily available this reveals the ignorance of the general population.
If u havent u should watch his bit about the 10 Commandments aswell :)
The 1953 Retired Actors Home performance is probably best, if so.
when i was a youth leader in church, my buddies had been talking about the zeitgeist movie and iw was concerned so i showed my pastor. he wasnt a fan of the george carlin monologue at the beginning lol but that was probably the truest part of the whole movie
People didn't sit and talk about Rights , it evolved over time with the greedy humans.
My understanding is that back in the day the Bible was seen as the Truth so people would swear on a Bible mostly in court. But Jesus says not to swear at all Matthew 5:33-37. And James backs this up in his epistle. James 5:12.
I always appreciate your open mind. Love the reactions!
The right hand is considered to be the only hand that can touch the lord in the Bible ! The left hand is considered as of the devil and left hand people were not trusted in the old days ! I was forced into being right handed and it set me back three years on learning how to use my hands 🙌 because of religion !

Reminded me of one of my favorite lines drom a movie, "I swear on souls of my dead relatives, and those that aren't feeling so good..." Its from "The Count of Monte Cristo" with Guy Pearce and Jim Caviezel.
As someone who was raised in a very fundamentalist evangelical environment it's great to see someone who is a Christian, but also incredibly open minded and thoughtful and accepting of others.
I'm not religious but your content is awesome.
Thank you
Something to keep in mind about George's talk about having unlimited rights.
In turn, the people around them have learned that if they call these people out, they're just gonna raise a fuss and be overall annoying. Persistence is scaled in the wrong direction, especially since these alleged free-speech advocates, like all other forms of trouble in today's society, are ultimately in the minority. They just also happen to be the sort of people that literally have nothing better to do than complain.
Great reaction to George, thankyou. You'll love his video, "An incomplete list of impolite words"
In earlier video's I was complaining about the volume of your mic...thank God that's behind us ;)
Well he is known as the philosopher😊👍
Y'know, I'm honestly surprised that people haven't begun referring to themselves as "Carlinists" or "Carlinites" with the frequency he is quoted online, but perhaps for the fact that Carlin would think the label was fuckin' stupid...
I love the you're so open minded. Your husband is a lucky man. Genuine humans are hard to find. Good luck in your marriage and hopefully you have a wonderful life!!!!
back in the ole days. People Shook hands with the right hand an WIPED with the Left hand....
I love your open-mindedness, intelligence and energy.
So do Americans just get used to bleeping stuff out?
Because as somebody who doesn't have to deal with this back where I live it almost hurts to listen to.
Some call it bleeping, I call it censuring. I can guess what he said but I should have the right to know what he is saying.
Raising one's hand is based on the ancient ide that showing one's open hand signifies open honesty.
Matthew 5:33-37
"Again, you have heard that it was said to the ancients, ‘Do not break your oath, but fulfill your vows to the Lord.
Brit just found your channel yesterday and love it. I don't subscribe to many but you I will.
We have a conservative Supreme Court that has been bought as George puts it “ bought and paid for”
This is quite possibly his saddest, and most true piece. And it's not just the US anymore, it's everywhere.
Well it’s always been that way since humans have existed and created the idea of “society” and class people in different sections to deem them what kind of privileges they get.
Some people mix opinion with 'truth'. Opinion is how you look at things, truth is 'the things you look at' regardless of your opinion..
This was from Carlin's last special. He died within the year of this being made.
Greetings from Oregon . Phido my 24 year old cat and I love you. Great reaction
@@kens32052 No it was not, they were thrown in there because they were distrusted.
Would definitely reccomend Carlin's take on the 10 Commandmants. It's a great breakdown of them and how they do/don't apply to modern society.
People thought this was stand up comedy, I see it as George Carlin having another TED talk, educating the masses.
For me when I was asked if I would “ swear on my mother’s grave”. I always say I don’t know my mother I am adopted.
my usual response is, "sure. but the bitch isn't dead yet."
The man had guts. Something missing in today's society.
Be sure to do your homework he assigned. I did and it made me cry.
You should have learned this in the 5th Grade
Hi! I enjoy your react videos and comments, observations on it.
Because they think if you're touching a book of make believe, it will guilt you in to telling the truth.
The hand gesture goes back to when everyone carried a weapon , a sword spear knife etc it proved you could be trusted as you had put down your weapon and therefore weren’t going to attack .
"Watch out, an open mind will get you in trouble"........................Nuff said.
I think being wonderfully oblivious is the biggest right we have as human beings
Just a quick thought...
Regarding telling people exactly how to hold their hands when swearing on the Bible....
It's an outward physical demonstration of compliance
When a person complies with this initial demand, they are psychologically offering themselves up, or preparing themselves, to tell the truth 🤔
Wikipedia was 2001, but other online encyclepia's have been around since 1995
so just an FYI George Carlin passed in 2008 at the age of only 71.
You need to follow up all these Carlin reactions with his routine on the 10 Commandments.
I don't think I'm a believer. but I want to believe. But probably didn't take the chance to swear on my mother's grave. Loved my mom. Greetings from Norway. 😀
R.I.P. George
Sadly, most people don't realize that when you say, "in the name of God", THAT is "taking the Lord's name in vain".
Good point.
EXACTLY!!!! God didn't make this shit up... humans did.
Humans also made god up.
Hi from The great white north, just a quick question, why the raining droplets on The George screen? Just wondering, thanks!
Raising our right hand in oath is something that dates back many years. The reason why we raise our right hand is because, during Medieval times, the right hand was marked every time someone committed a crime. Therefore, raising their right hand to take an oath would allow the marks to be seen.
In fact:the parents of the great theoretical physicist Michio Kaku were also put in an camp like this
I dont understand religious people. " it was made by people claiming it was God!!!!"
Yet they believe people saying God exist without even a slither of evidence.
"that's deep" say you. I say George is deep. That's why he is my favourite Comedian/educator, that we have had in the last several decades.
Thank you!
Genuine rights aka life and liberty are God given. My rights end when they infringe upon another humans rights.

Britt... one of my favorite words is EPIHPANY ... when it finally hits you... that there is no god, no jesus, no heaven, no hell, etc.. that's an epiphany.
Our nation's forefathers established the U.S. Constitution, which includes the Bill of Rights.
Carlin was a true American treasure.
humanity didnt create rights....a very very tiny percentage of rich/powerful men created rights.
Putting your hand on the Bible came from some overly religious whackaloons who thought that if you merely put your hand on that book, somehow you wouldn't lie. Which always cracks me up, because what's going to happen if you lie? George addresses that in this bit, I "believe."
Britt, you are a true treasure in today's world.
Hence the often attributed to Mark Twain quote, _"There are lies, damned lies, and statistics."_
No, sis, God _did_ give us the Bill of Rights because God was invoked through that process; the men who gave us those so-called rights invoked "God" when they wrote them.
I'm half shocked but not really when people don't know about the internment camps.
Both my maternal grandparents got locked up.
Never learned that.
George got the ultimate freedom. RIP Bud
You think death = freedom?
"Just when these citizens needed their rights the most, their government took them away...Rights arent rights if you can take them away."
This part just leaves me speechless.
I always liked George, I guess he found out for sure when he passed. RIP.
I’m an atheist Someone told me I need to find Jesus and I said Is Jesus missing like in the woods or something cuz he seems like an important guy where do we start the woods
I'd much rather swear to tell the truth with my hand on the Constitution...
to your question,. i am pretty sure the bible says in multiple spots.. to not take any oath at all..
Love your comment, "men lie, woman lie, numbers don't". It's like I always say, "math never lies".
