- The Cincinnati Reds made a ton of free agent signings for the 2020 season, particularly with position players. In this video, we'll be breaking down how Mike Moustakas, Shogo Akiyama, and Nick Castellanos will affect the Reds.
The Reds had terrible production from second base in 2019, with five players making at least ten starts at the position. While primarily a third baseman, Mike Moustakas was brought in to fill the position with his big left-handed bat. But will he be good enough on defense at a more demanding position?
Shogo Akiyama gives the Reds a new look in the outfield as a good fielder with high on-base skills. He was an all-star in Japan and even holds the NPB single season record for hits. He'll just have to prove he can be successful in MLB.
Nick Castellanos is seen as the biggest prize of the Reds offseason haul, coming off a year in which he led MLB with 58 doubles. His bat should continue to produce in a hitter-friendly ballpark, but his defense could be a problem.

As someone who's lived in Cincy forever, this season looks so much different then even the Reds playoff teams in the early 2010s. So excited for this year.

One facet of Akiyama that will likely fly under the radar is his ability to avoid massive slumps. Of course all players are subject to them, but he seems to limit how bad they can be. I attribute that largely due to his natural athleticism, but of course that could be a concern going forward as he's not exactly 'young' anymore. However, I still think it was a good signing by the Reds overall.
Consistency is a great trait, especially for someone likely to bat leadoff. I'll be rooting for him for sure!
This team will be one of the more interesting teams to keep an eye on. The end result could really go either way, but it’s good to see they are actually trying.

Not sure anyone was surprised about the Reds having one of the best rotations in the NL last year. And watch out for my man Phillip Ervin. Ervin gives a great option off the bench against LHP, comes in handy with Josh Hader and Andrew Miller in the division

The reds need to train senzel to be there shortstop. He played thirdbase before. If he cant play ss, they have to find a team that would trade a solid shortstop to them for senzel. Maybe they look into trading for francisco lindor, that would be a huge bonus.
I'm so pumped for this season. So much to watch. It's gonna be interesting for so many reasons.

i know this video is pretty old, but one thing you missed with Winker is that he's almost strictly a platoon guy. he can't hit lefties. so the only difference between him and castellanos isn't health

Thank you. I've been trying to sound the alarm on the Reds defense. Their starting pitching is great but their bullpen is a potential question mark. But the pitching quality may not matter if their defense is terrible. Shogiyama is old and has declining range. Castellanous has never been a good defender. Moose is going to play 2B through his age 36 season. Votto and Suarez have never been above average defenders either. This could be a historically bad defense.
The best comparison is NY Mets. Good offense but terrible defense behind elite starting pitching and questionable bullpen.
I guess the hope is that everyone can at least be close to average defensively and not be massive liabilities
@@outtaherebaseball3205 I guess that's the plan. If you have enough strikeouts, you don't have to worry about defense. Also Great American Pinball doesn't require as good of a defense as a pitcher's park. But an outfield of Shogoiyama, Castellanous, and Winkler would be catastrophically awful.
@@cheesecurdbandit414 The defense wont be good, but it can be average. Senzel has the upside to be a great CF defender, as last year was his first year there. He has elite speed and a good arm. Suarez is a good defender at third, Galvis is good at SS, and Votto has always been average to above average at first. Really its the Corner outfield spots that could be terrible. We will see
Suarez was a very good 3B last year, and iirc, Joey Votto has won a gold glove, has he not?

Now that there’s universal DH, that definitely helps the Reds a lot so they can put one of their poor defenders but +batsmen Nick Castellanos or Jesse Winker in the DH. They still have weak spots in catcher and shortstop but at the same time, the Cubs and Cardinals did nothing and got worse while the Brewers are questionable.

Notice he didn't love this comment like most of the others. Unfortunately, while the Cubs have remained consistently the best in the NLC for over half a decade now (6 seasons) they have become a pretty boring team. They still win yes. They just won the division despite know-it-alls saying they'd be in 4th place and Yu Darvish was done. But they do it in a boring way. Nobody really cares now. A team like the Reds came off as much more entertaining to people. I mean they had already crowned them division champs before the season even started they were gonna be so damn good lmao.

I actually have them winning the division this year. Cardinals lack any sort of offense, Brewers have the opposite problem with pitching, Cubs are falling apart and Pittsburgh is Pittsburgh.
Didn't age well at all. Go Cubs Go. Honestly didn't know this day would ever come, when the Cubs win the division and people talk like they suck and things are sinking. It's actually kinda cool. You weren't alone. Everyone had the Cubs in 4th place and a lot of people handed the Reds the division crown despite proving nothing at all yet. So I'm not upset the Cubs lost in the playoffs. They finished in 1st after predicted to be 4th so that's good enough.
