Glad you made it home safe do a compression check of both cylinders if there is a small difference between the two you probably have a valve guide issue. If that is the case and they need replaced do not have bronze guides installed. Use steal guides with nitrate coated valves and blue valve guide seals . I have built at least 20 shovel motors and none of them had oil burning problems and they didn't leak oil . Hope this helps ride safe ✌️😎
Got an old bike story for you. Friend of mine had a 75 sportster. The lights went out when we were riding in the late night. Had to use a big lighter to look for the short. It was in the headlight, a wire, rubbing pulled it away from the headlight housing change the fuse, and we’re on the road again.

i've had my shovel for over 30 years and there's 2 things that are a must for a dependable, enjoyable ride. change the points to a nice dynatec ignition. set it and forget it for 20 years. the second thing is to change the rear sprocket to get more top end. it's an easy thing with rear disc brake models. you will never miss the low end you lose and it will cruise at 70 with the rpm like at 60
I know the feeling about old bikes. Two years ago a buddy sold me his 1990 EVO Road King Ultra Classic. I did nothing with the bike for two years and he had done nothing for ten years, so I decided it’s time to put her back on the road. Oils changed and carb rebuilt I took her out, she is slower then my Police Special and that’s not a problem. She doesn’t stop as fast, and that’s fine. But riding her is more fun then I’ve had in a long time. I’m getting a feeling of confidence that she is ready for a long ride and living in Florida winter riding is the best, so I’m getting a plan together for a trip to remember.
Had a 79 Lowrider. Was an 8 year love-hate ordeal. Running damn fine when I sold it. I have faith in you to tear into top end, repair, and continue to put miles on it. You will win the battle.
Old school tracking device, if you're ever lost follow the oil spots back home. Those worm clamps may save somebody when they break down, pray and need one. I mostly go under the speed limit so the law(s) can pass me. Sight seeing sportster makes my buddies feel like they're winning the race. Haha
All these things mean you are riding it - all these things are par for course re shovel riding so don't get disheartened - tips - get some rubber grommets between a washer (on the exhaust side) and exhaust support strut (flh floor board rubbers work well). Make the holes in the support strut for mounting the exhaust a little over size (say 2mm). Tighten the exhausts to the heads fully. Then tighten the exhaust to the support strut with nylon insert lock nuts rubbers and washer in place. Squish that rubber until they are firm. Boom - exhaust sorted 😎. Never stop shovelling!
I noticed on your last video when on your way to Texas that the front cylinder pipe isn't blue.. meaning that its obviously not getting warm like the rear cylinder and while I'm aware that the front cylinder will always run cooler i don't think its supposed to be that cool.. I vote for the shovelhead to be torn down and completely redone just as the Tramp had done ro it.. I sure would love to see a springer on the front of it and a king & queen seat
Here's an old bike story for ya.. my husband taught me to ride like 30 plus years ago on a Kawasaki 550 Spectra.. three months into my greenhorn ship, my hubby, bro in law and one of my buddies decided to go to my mother in laws for the wkend.. about a 5 hour drive from where we lived in Illinois to her house in Wisconsin.. just before we left my husband changed his plugs on his bike and my buddy told him to put them in his tool bag for a just in case moment.. about a half hour away from my in laws, the guys had to fuel up and since I had my 72 Cutlass and didn't need gas I decided to go on ahead.. when I got there I told my motger in law that the guys needed to get fuel and should be here shortly.. As we're talking we start hearing bikes and then then a police siren. I looked at my mother in law and said I hope that siren isn't for those guys.. when they pulled over in front of the house the cop pulled in right behind them.. long story short, it costed $348.10 to bail out my hubby and buddy.. you see when they left the station and leaving town, an old lady was driving to slow for their liking and the cop said one looked at the other as he twirled his finger in the air to signal the passing of the old woman and he watched as my husband went around the right side and my buddy passed her on the other side and floored it.. he dropped the improper lane usage, but charged them with speeding in access of 100 mph plus my buddy didn't have a license let alone a bike one.. since we wrtent Wisconsin residents they were arrested.. welk yoy know small town know everyone and everything so I had to drive his sportster outta town cuz they didn't know I was there with a car.. I had a permit at the time so i was perfectly legal and they were waiting for us cime Sunday night. At the time this bike set up was a mess.. throttle cable was broke so you had to pull it back manually, no foot pegs just highway pegs and a few other things.. it was different being the first time driving a Harley and after learning three months before.. at least my buddy had faith in me lol .. well about half way home I felt a little uncomfortable on the bike and didn't know why.. my husband was up front then my bro in law then me on my buddy's bike and he was behind me in my car so as I continued thinking why I'm uncomfortable and the voice in my head saying get off the bike, get off the bike my train if thought changed to what would I do if the motor locked up cuz if it did everything would lock up, right? Luckily I'm mechanically inclined because right as that was going through my mind bang the sound of the motor changed, thinking to myself that ain't good and I need to pull over as I go to look down to find the shifter and brake I catch my car out the corner of my eye and ended up looking at my buddy who's eyes are as big as saucers pointing at me to pull over.. I wave back at him with a look if dude, relax I'm pulling over.. I again go to find the shifter and brake when I see nothing but smoke pouring out of the bottom of the bike.. I'm like holy crap! So I stop and he pulls in behind me jumps out of the car more shaken then I am.. well apparently the oil plug vibrated out of the bottom of the bike and hit my car.. he kept trying to get me to pull over but couldn't hear the horn cuz loud pipes, couldn't see him flashing the lights cuz the mirrors were adjusted to him and I was stretched to the max being it was set up for him and he's a lot taller then me.. I looked at the back tire and you could not see any chrome because it was covered in oil, there was a strip on the road as far as my eye could see, well no wonder why I was uncomfortable.. so its Sunday night, everything is closed, what are we gonna do? Well you know those old spark plugs my husband had in his bag? You guessed it, so if you ever lose your oil plug, the spark plug is the same width and thread as the oil plug so we put the spark plug in, added about 1&1/2 qts of oil and drove the rest if the way home.. after that I asked my buddy if he wanted to sell the bike, I felt like it should be mine after that, but he said no.. so told him if he ever decides to sell it let me know.. well my hubby and I moved to Wisconsin few years later and I got a call from my buddy asking me if I was still interested, I asked how much and said yeah I'll be there tomorrow and took my 88 cavalier and trailer and was there the next day.. bikes was in pieces and the plug was still in the bottom end.. a month later I was ridding and have been her owner for the last 23/24 years! Yep if you own these old girls better learn how to wrench em!

i rode my '77 flh from ohio to sturgis in 1995. it shit my chain on the trip back trying to keep up with my friends on their evo bikes. i couldn't deal with the stress of riding a shovelhead long distances now, at 69 years old...
Well glad ya made it home safe and had an awesome trip. Now park that thing until you can do a complete engine rebuild. If done right it will be the last time you'll need to do anything to that engine. Been there done that!
Amen brother! If you go in knowing that the adventure can be this part of it then so be it. If Ive said it once, Ive said it a thousand times. I have okd bikes and I have newer bikes. I love them both because I have choices to suit my moods. An unplanned scoot from Savannah, Ga to Daytona or Ft. Lauderdale at 80 miles an hour Im jumping on one of my newers. A planned trip thats backroads and long? Hell yeah jump on my 57 or my 61. I have it stuck in my mind, without proof but makes sense to me that back when alot of these older bikes were designed the national highway speed mostly was 55 MPH. The government in all their wisdom actually inforced that federally during the gas crisis of the 70s because at the time and still to this day that number provided over an average the best fuel ecomomy of different vehicles over a broad spectrum. We all know the old bikes are cool. We all know you'll learn to work on them to keep them up and running. We all know they are pieces of mechanical art. They have soul and personality. We all know sustained 70 mph will burn em up. Generally. Hell, my 05 Wideglide has a listed top end of 85 Mph. I dont take that one to an 80 mph run to central Florida. I guess Im just of the opinion that we all know there is room in the world for old and new. You put out honest videos, your living what alot if people wish they could. I enjoy your vids and hope you keep it up. As always..... keep on keeping on.✌️👍

i'd call that a result, just working the gremlins out and that oil spot barely qualifies as a leak. valve guide job on that one cylinder, beef up the exhaust hanger and away you go.
It's a shovelhead. If it's not leaking, it's out of oil, hahaha. Sorry, I had to say it. I have a 78 flh bobber, and the biggest problem I had is oil sumping then puking when I kick it over. I don't remember how many times I've rebuilt the oil pump over the years. S&S high volume, but it is always the check ball that is the problem, I guess it is just time for me to quit being so cheap and get a new one.
My first Harley, a 73' Ironhead back in 94' thought me a hard lesson. A clapped out Harley is more trouble then it's worth. Even after a "rebuild" that POS will torment your soul. Yes, they look cool but ride an hour, work for 4 hour bikes get old real quick. For me, when the jiffy stand cracked in half from the vibrations I decided the bike was evil and had no love for me and needed to go.
I still ride an 86 EVO Wide Glide, I can't push it or i will blow oil out the PCV. If I don't it runs and rides great, rode it half way across Canada this summer. ( Always something to fix when I get home though.)
Sounds like it was a typical old Harley adventure. Ride repair repeat! 😊 Should've used bailing wire instead of hose clamps. I gotta rib you a bit. In fairness, I just had an in tank fuel pump take a dump at 41000 miles on my Honda. And the pump is a Mitsubishi used in all kinds of bikes and some cars. Nothing man made lasts.
Shovelheads, when men were men, and sheep were nervous. They break, you fix them, they leak oil, but they can't be shut off from outer space. Still nothing better, and what you learn lasts a lifetime! If you don't like wrenching the evo is bulletproof, but something about a shovelhead is just better! My opinion and thousands may beg to differ.
That’s cool Corey. Oil coming from an exhaust pipe is not normal, my bottom breather Evo is doing it too, most likely getting past the valve, also blowing some white smoke but old bike stuff lol.

I've been running shovels for the past 40yrs, and a good practise is to have 2 engines.
Keep a fresh one on the bench to swap.after a long road trip.

May have blown a head gasket. Check the torque on the head bolts.

I found I had a collapsed valve spring and a warped valve stem.
