      @andre jamison Dumb down the game? A bunch of highschool snd one and done? You realize that the 80’s and 90’s had over 4x more highschool draftees than the 2000’s did go look up all the highschool draftees and what year they were drafted. Bron cringes when he doesnt have the ball in his hand, i can tell you didnt even watch this season because bron played more off ball than ever, why do you think they consistently had a playmaker like caruso, bradley, rondo etc on the floor. Spacing is at its peak as of rn 4/5 shooters on the court at all times in the 80’s 90’s you had 1 if not NO shooter on the court. Zones are no longer illegal, you cant pack the paint because teams can actually pull from outside the arc meaning man to man defense takes a lot more skill. Offenses are able to do more, that’s why theyre scoring more. Put a 90’s defense against a modern team you think theyd be able to keep up without fouling? thats a fucking joke lmao jus because you could body slam niggas dont make the defense tougher. FUNNIEST PART in the era of social media, where you are put under a microscope, where criticism is so much easier to be spread, the players are less mentally tough lmao are you fucking kidding? Even MJ acknowledged how mentally tough you have to be in this era

We had all time greats but whats different now is the role players are 100 times better. The coaches are 100 times better. Player development is 100 times better. Look at the Last Dance. Jordan was playing against average competition most nights. Guys that wouldnt even make it in the league today. Same in NFL. Only sport where players of every era can compete somewhat is baseball. But in football for example...yes Jim Brown, Bo, LT, and the real stars could play today but the rest of them guys barely even worked out. They smoked cigs at halftime. I agree and disagree. While the game has progressed towards offense I think the fact that most Centers are moving towards the 6-9 to 6-10 range facilitates more switching. While the concepts defensively hasn’t changed the level of athleticism amongst bigs has. Guys like Embiid Gobert are traditional rim protectors but they too can move their feet great. But then you have the new era of bigs like JJJ Giannis Ad and especially Bam who have no issues switching on to guards and holding their own. Eventually the defense is gonna catch up to the offense. • @ZenMasterScr3wy
      @ZenMasterScr3wy 3 роки тому

      I think it's the nature of the game. The more energy you expend on defense, the less you have for the offense. A player on the court for just defense has shown to be offensive liabilities since teams can just sag off (Sefolosha). I think because of that amongst other things, the masterminds of the game have seen that it's more efficient to focus on scoring more than trying to stop other teams.
      Football on the other hand has separate sets of players for both offense and defense, so it's easier to specialize and create an iron-clad wall. Soccer has similar divisions too The best defenders stay on their home's goal, and the best offensive players stay near the opponent's goal. It's simper to specialize when one player has a well-defined offensive/defensive role. IMO those well-defined roles make it simpler to evolve over time.

      I still feel that the actual One on One defense needs evolving. Even the stance and the "Reactive Defense" that most players play in Basketball. Playing it myself as pickup ball and practicing, I thought about how valuable a defender is to the offensive player. Especially during fast breaks when the defense is backing up trying to guard the offensive player who has the momentum running towards the basket. Watch fast break highlights on UA-cam. Look at the defensive players feet, legs, and negative momentum they have going backwards. Look at how many of them look lost lol.

    Gonna disagree partially. Yes in theory the game has evolved and there are more moves and counters for the same defensive concepts, BUT those moves aren't necessarily as mastered by the players just because they exist in theory. The game has moved on from mid-range and post, therefore many of those moves are "extinct". Modern players don't have the same footwork. Yes the step back footwork has gotten better (unless you consider it a travel) but the mid range and post footwork just isn't there at an elite level. Things change and evolve with time but not always linearly. It's possible to have regressed in some aspects but improved in others. but this isn't true. Hand checking won't work on the better offensive players (which is what Gil's point is) but it's going to limit everyone else who isn't at the gilbert arenas scoring level. The main point he's making here is that defensive philosophy in the NBA is ultimately going to be limited (unless you remove the concept of fouls all-together, which will never happen) whereas offensive philosophies are constantly evolving. He's saying a great offense will always beat a great defense - regardless of era rules.

      Some players talents are just generational. Today theres alot more skilled players who could've played in the 80's and 90's compared to back then when only a handful of players could've crossed over into this era. The game is much faster, players are not suppressed or limited. They are allowed to show their game.

      Nah defense still comes down to effort il give it to you though all 5 positions have the ability to shoot the 3 but that doesn't make current offense sets complicated or unstoppable most teams run 5 out or 4 out 1in in today's basketball which is not new to basketball at all the intrinsic difference that you see today is that now its just used to space the floor for iso or drive and kicks which is basic basketball in the past it was used for motion cuts and back screens/ backdoor cuts. the bucks against the heat in the playoffs were a good example of a team trying to do the 5 out/ 4 out 1 as a basic drive and kick offense which doesn't necessarily compliment Giannis,middleton or the rest of the teams skillset its why they were just standing there letting Giannis Iso into a crowded heat paint but the heat also didn't over commit to the paint as well which left brook lopez open who is not gonna beat you by shooting 7 3s a game so what I'm saying is teams like golden state who run the 5 out or 4 out 1in set at full capacity is because they move to create shots and it compliments their skills are hard on defenses but someone like a bucks team trying to run it at a basic drive and kick level poses no threat to a competent defense like miami the argument to me is very similar to arenas view on analytics

HOWEVER, when you’re not allowed to touch a player, that in itself makes a HUGE difference and as an offensive player you can do way more moves. There is no way you would be able to dance on these defenders and pull up from anywhere if you were allowed to hand check. It makes a huge difference and anyone who has played basketball with people hand checking would agree. It’s way harder to get shots up, drive to the lane, even move without the ball. The players today definitely have it way easier on offense. I say if todays players are so skilled let’s bring back hand checking and see if it’s true.

    You can knock out new moves a few hundred times and if you study defense, its easy to see how guys just get what they want nowadays. Defenses aren't able to be innovated at the same rate as Offenses because the fundamentals pay off way more on defense. Offense, when your player has specific talents in footwork or a quick release, can be molded a dozen different ways even on the fly. I watch NBA games now and can't get mad at some of the defenses because what they are going up against isn't defendable unless they completely give up on the offensive end. I completely disagree. I just watched Boston, Miami, and Toronto play multiple games in which their opponents struggled to score against matchup zones. Last time I checked shooting the low and mid forties isn’t unstoppable offense

    I hear what Gil is saying and I would agree that offense has evolved by a tremendous scale in every position. But, let's be real, no one's getting their shot off like that if they're being handchecked. That's why we work so hard to create space for ourselves. I mean, honestly, if handchecking were still allowed in the rules of today's game do you think someone like Steph Curry at his size would still be able to drop 400 threes in a season? Ever notice how the top 10 most threes made in a season are all post-handchecking era players? That's a direct correlation, if you ask me, due to those changes of what players are now able and unable to do defensively in regulation play.
