In 1979 ABBA donated all royalties for this song to UNICEF. In many parts of the world young girls are discriminated even before they are born. Every time you play Chiquitita, money is given to projects that supports the rights of young girls. Over the years millions of dollars. Thank you ABBA for helping those young girls. Good music matters.
4.8 million as of 2021.
Did not know that...Bravo ABBA. Good music changes lives indeed.
China banned more than one female child for decades
Actually, I think they only donated half of it, and recently (last ten years or so) they turned that figure up to 100%.
Another reason to listen to that song another 50.000 times. One of the very few songs that never gets old for me no matter how man times I hear it.
The harmonies are amazing! No one does harmonies like ABBA.
The Eagles, Chris Stapleton and his wife…
BeeGees
QUEEN, ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA, BAD RELIGION, BEACH BOYS. But ABBA does it also fine🙂
@norman smithersOutro was also tik tok trend last year.
3 Dog Night, Crosby-Stills-Nash and Young...many more. Although I love ABBA, to say they are the best?
I'm Rock, Metal, old school country but Abba for me is among the top 5 best bands ever.
👍
DITTO from Nick UK 🇬🇧 appreciate
Yes
It is like a piano symphony. Impeccable blending of the two ladies. They seamlessly mix as one.
Benny Andersson described their combined sound as "almost metallic". Lite two perfectly synched bells.
Wow. You hit the "essence" of ABBA without even noticing. "Seem kind of sad.....But they sounded happy". ABBA is the masters of that combination. Happy, catchy melody. Sad, deep lyrics. Thanks for the great reaction.
Yep. Perfect way to describe ABBA’s music. Brings back feelings of nostalgia 🎶
Yep. Your right there Joe. Such a sad happy song
fernando was no 1 in over 20 countries what other group ever done that?
I grew up with rock music, but I tell you now... abba are in the top 3 greatest songwriters in history....
yes sir!thank you!
Yep hard rock! I've become a big softy myself. My gay nephew called me a homo the other day when I was listening to Fernando lol.
@@MuckoManLol!Oh Come ooon!Abba has got such a diverse audience. From gays to punks and metalheads.A huge army of fans. This is phenomenal and that's why such an exceptional band. They are a big hug of consolation to every kind of people.Would you believe that some great rock personas such as David Grohl,Gene Simmons,Lemmy,Ozzy,Ian Gillan,Richie Blackmoore,Corey Taylor(Slipknot),Jonathan Davies(KORN)Bjork and Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins are all self confessed Abba fans?!Even John Frusciente Of RHCP did a cover of SOS while they were on tour.I feel that Abba represent for us and for many rockers a vulnerable side of ourselves so their music is attached to this part. And usually that's something we tend to hide and protect.Besides many rockers are like oysters.Tough on the outside, soft and precious on the inside.
ABBA were almost a guilty pleasure when I was a kid. They were almost too mainstream, too ‘pop’. I was a punk and hard rock fan, and I didn’t want to admit I liked them, but I did. And the older I get, the more I realize that I was hearing songs that were timeless. And while I can use the word ‘timeless’ about many individual songs from my youth, ABBA is one of a very short list of groups that have an entire catalogue of classics that only gets better as the years go by.
Apparently, according to Glen Matlock of the Sex Pistols, the piano intro for SOS was the inspiration for the guitar riff in Pretty Vacant. He was a fan.
The great thing about many Abba songs is: they sound simple, but they are usually quite complex. They were the masters of pop music.
40 years ago I grew up on Zeppelin and heavier rock but always loved ABBA as well. They were a hit machine in the 70's.
Abba is one of those bands, like queen. They're not a genre. They elevate beyond labels.
I know ABBA has a loyal fanbase in North America but to the average music lover there, it really cannot be stated enough just how big this group was everywhere else around the world. This was a huge hit in Mexico and South America.
Grupo Liberación from Monterrey, México do a version in cumbia in the 80s
Apart from the US and the UK Abba is more popular than the Beatles in every country of the world.
@@HorseloverFat1984 No chance.
@@elizajohn5 Wanna bet?
Most likely because they didn't tour the US very often. Relied on radio play.
Abba sings in Spanish too. They are from Sweden and can speak/sing in multiple languages.
So you may have heard the Spanish version.
A great group of the 70/80's and even now!
One of my Spanish friends didn't actually realise ABBA were not from Spain until he moved abroad.
This is my all time favorite ABBA song. A song about heartache and pain, but mostly about friendship, hope, and redemption. The crescendos are just amazing! And NO, it's not related to salsa music.
Mine too! The profits from this song went to charity too!
Being Mexican, I can tell you that a lot of our songs may sound "happy," but they have some of the most heart wrenching lyrics ever 😂
The kind of music that fills you with hope. The harmonies soar to great heights.
My favorite ABBA song, I had asked a Spanish friend of mine once and she told me Chiquitita is a generic term for a young girl, kind of like how we would say "sweetie"; that unique piano sound is not a piano at all but Benny's custom harpsichord, which plucks the strings rather than banging them. Have a good day!
Your friend's right about the translation. The exact meaning of "chiquitita" is "little one". But it's a word you'd only use with a baby or a little kid. I think "sweetie" is very accurate as a translation. Greetings from Spain. 😀
@@MrMARLOWE1973 greetings from the Jersey shore in New Jersey USA!
You can never go wrong with Abba. They have so many sad songs that sounds happy. The winner takes it all is a prime example. More Abba please!
"The Winner Takes It All" is my 2nd favorite ABBA song: ua-cam.com/video/92cwKCU8Z5c/v-deo.html Fantastic!!!
The Winner Takes It All video really gets to me. Agnetha looks so sad, so hurt.
I was just about to write something similar. Don´t let the "happy sound" fool you. Another song with similar happiness/sadness-mix is "Knowing me, knowing you".
@@jokervienna6433 I fully agree. They have a few I can think of now. Move on, Fernando, Angel eyes and Keep an eye on Dan. Love those songs so much 👌
That's the power of polka. Abba knew polka and they adapted it to make their own pop songs.
In their time, they were the biggest band in the world. Their harmonies and spirit were a fresh perspective for the early 80s.
Years ago, when my whole life had collapsed, this song brought me back to life. And I had one friend who thought I was the best. It was all I needed. The last 30 years have been the best.
The greatest pop group ever. No bad song.
Can't disagree. So many hits.
Abba wrote "Chiquitita" and "I Have a Dream" (both from the Voulez-Vous album) for UNICEF (a worldwide children's charity), with the royalties from both songs going to global famine relief and child welfare, through UNICEF.
The most underrated abba songs imo: the message, so truly but uplifting (melody and lyrics) at the same time! It’s about friendship, care, hope… beautiful
Underated???That were almost funny
ARTIST COMBINED SALES TOTAL
1 BEATLES 22.1 MILLION
2 QUEEN 12.8 MILLION
3 ABBA 11.3 MILLION
4 ROLLING STONES 10.1 MILLION
yes thats the accurate estmation abba are the third best selling group of all time maybe they will hit the top soon
Beatlemania abandoning all sense and reason ,following the latest fad .Thet couldn’t sing ,play their instruments, when they harmonised it was like someone trampling on a cats tail .lyrics were childish .Yet some people compare them to the great classical composers .At least ABBA had a pleasant sound
Big hit and its Spanish version was colossal success with phenomenal sales in Latin America and Spanish speaking markets. After so many decades this song has become some kind of a traditional anthem there.'Chiquitita' is a Spanish word'(Little girl'/'lil one'')Melody sounds exotic and flavoured with Spanish/Latin vibes and some Greek 'syrtaki' hints especially in the outro.
I’ve always been a huge fan of ABBA and this song is just one of the many reasons. Glad you did this one!
I'm so glad to see you again with reaction to ABBA
several things to say about "Chiquitita" (1979)
Chiquitita" means 'little girl' (with affection) in spanish And the melody have a spanish tune, specialy by the acustic guitar But the center is the wonderful piano, like akmost all ABBA songs
"Chiquitita" is a beautiful song, it has hopeful lyrics, a melody that starts very soft with the blonde Agnetha's solo, then grows and explodes in a powerful chorus; Agnetha and Anni Frida's vocal harmonies are of excellence
It allows us to check how excellent singers Agnetha and Frida are and what harmonies of excellence they achieve. It stands out especially when they stretch the monosyllables with great quality and beauty
"Chiquitita" was premiered especially for the UNICEF Concert (January 9, 1979) and its royalties are eternal for UNICEF
"Chiquitita" was ABBA's greatest success in Latin America, that prompted ABBA to record it in Spanish, and its success was so extraordinary that in the following year ABBA recorded a full album with their best songs entirely in Spanish
("Chiquitita" in Spanish is the biggest ABBA hit in My country Argentina)
Chiquitita" is in the Top 3 of all ABBA worldwide biggest hits, with 'Dancing Queen" and "Fernando", and it's a fantastic Masterpiece
The official video was filmedin Swizterland 1979 (ABBA goes for a TV Special)
It's the only promotional video that ABBA made without Sweden
I wish to see you soon in another reactions to ABBA songs
GOD bless you and stay safe
My best regards from
Buenos Aires, Argentina, South América
The only pop group my maternal grandparents could stand. This is my favorite ABBA song with the piano motif closing it out.
One off the greates groups off all time, my mum liked them and nearing 50 years off age now, i loved them, the girls and the band as a whole were perfect, makes my day when i hear them on the radio at work.😊❤
Glad you checked them out. The girls of ABBA can sing it like no other.
If you think that sounded "Mexican", wait until you hear them do Fernando 🙂
That would be Spanish
They sing some of their songs in Spanish, Swedish and English
Thank God no one got triggered by cultural appropriation back then.
@@goiastr7760 Mexican and Spanish music have different vibes, yes obviously they use the same language x
@@speedyhamburger "Fernando" has Spanish "vibes"...
"Chiquitita" is the most affectionate and sweet way to refer to a little girl in spanish... a far way to translate it would be "little girl" or "little one" . This song was a great success in Latin America. it's a musical gem...just wonderful.
Chiquitita (little child) by ABBA, one of the prettiest songs about love giving a hand up to a little soul feeling extreme hopelessness, rejection and unbearable heartfelt sorrow. No matter how bad the times, or lack of hope, I am here for you dear. We move forward - togetherness.
The music is Spanish guitar in the beginning with Swedish folksong.
By far, best pop band in the world 😮
!!!!
ABBA has so many beautiful songs in their repertoire
Knowing me knowing me is my favorit track
@Brad & Lex , Firstly " CONGRATULATIONS ON PARENTS TO BE " . Brad is right the song depicts friends rallying around a depressed friend to get them to open up and talk . My favourite ABBA song is " Thank you for the music " which is a fitting song choice to you both from all your subs lol . 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Abba has been a worldwide success in the 70s and 80s. They are among the top 10 of highest-earning music bands of all time.
Love this song, it messes with the nerves in a nice way.
My Hispanic mother loves ABBA. I grew up listening to them. They are one of the best bands that ever were in my opinion.
My favorite Abba is "Eagle". Has special meaning for me when I travel in astral.
Wife here..Can never go wrong with ABBA..!!.Gorgeous Harmonies!
You can’t beat ABBA says this HUGE Yes, Bowie, and Floyd fan. Seriously ❤❤ There are many songs that use that acoustic sound including Bowie. Yes it’s a cheering-up song.
It does have an oompah feel and they are Swedish and still making music. They weave perfect pop.
Abba is pretty much my childhood. To see someone else reaction to it is almost like you see my childhood, even if you don't. God bless y'all.
Please more ABBA, I know you've done several, you won't be disappointed! "The winner takes it all," "Fernando," "S.O.S." and a deep cut (one of my favorites) "Marionette." Love your channel almost as much as I love Abba!
ABBA had soooooo many hits, this was one of their best
My favorite ABBA song. This is not a Christmas song. They have a Christmas song, “Little Things,” from the album they released last year. It’s very pretty. After 43 years this song still gives me goosebumps. Agnetha and Anni Frid are unmatched when they sing together. The vocal definition of magic. If you want a song celebrating the Winter Solstice, I would recommend “Ring Out Solstice Bells,” by Jethro Tull. Listen to the version off of their Christmas album; it’s an excellent arrangement with lovely bells.
It is one of the ironies of the world that Benny and Bjorn were incredible song writers. They have a deep catalogue of powerful and meaningful songs, and most people only know their top 40 pop classics.
Here's a parody I wrote of this song, entitled "Chicken Titas":
Chicken Titas, held in a bra
You're restrained by this new ruling
In this size there is no room for unspooling
How I hate to see a locked chest
There is no way you can defy it
The PD is prepared to quell a riot
Chicken Titas, want to burst through
Double shoulder boulder pylons
Your breasts penned, in a cage of lacy nylon
You were always free to expand
Now I see you caught in a tether
While double-D cups squeeze you together
Chicken Titas, yearning to grow
How the bra straps criss and they cross and restrict your breathing
You'll be flouncing round again and this law will end
You will have no bind or sheathing
Chicken Titas, yearning to fly
Now the farmer's going to court and suing the mayor
Till we see them once again in the chicken pens
Say "adieu bras", Chicken Titas
Topless hens in the chicken pens
Say "adieu bras", Chicken Titas
If this stupid law is struck down
And you lose this binding order
All the bras will be pilfered by a hoarder
Chicken Titas, you can't refuse
There is no way you can resell them
The sanitation laws repel them
Chicken Titas, once again free
Hacky-sacky lactating globes for both fun and breeding
You'll be dancing round the lawn when the bras are gone
And I think it bears repeating
Chicken Titas, once again bare
Now the hoarders pilfering bras descending upon you
But you set them all on fire on a poultry pyre
Burning your bras, Chicken Titas
Topless chicks gonna flick your Bics
Burning your bras, Chicken Titas
Topless hens in the chicken pens
Say "adieu bras", Chicken Titas
abba was and is still soo underated.. they are a fantastic band/group they have had sooo many many hit song's it seems everything they do is just pure gold.
ah finally! glad I mentioned it, their best song imo magnificent music
When I want to be cheered up, I listen to this song. I think the genre you are searching fot is Polka. From what I've heard the Spanish version is just a beautiful. You are exaclty rigjt, happy and sad at the same time. ABBA is awesome.
One of my favorite Abba songs.
ABBA were one of the greatest Pop Bands in history. Been listening to this one since I was a wee lad (and it was a new song) and it figuratively never gets old. 😍❤
This is the song of life, for each of us, at one time or another. Many of their songs are masterpieces that will live on forever. With the voices and the harmonies and the writing and the musicianship, It is no wonder that they sold nearly the most albums in history! They bring pure joy and that is hard to get these days.
Brad always looks like he is analyzing everything and Lex looks like she is just enjoying the music for what it is, pleasant sounding and making her smile.
absolutely hilarious. I totally forgot about this song but I do learn Abba from about second grade when I bought my first two pieces of vinyl across the street at a yard sale where they had a stack of well played and worn out single 45 rpms. I recognized The Beatles Yellow Submarine from the radio and we would all sing it on the playground in third grade. it was so easy to sing along. and then the second one I bought was Abba sos. that song Still slays me to this day. it's right from the same era. and it's rather simple pop but one thing you should realize is they started off singing Everything in Swedish but we're one of the first to learn how to write in English as far as composing songs and then deliver them that way but still with their Swedish affect. which to me is incredibly endearing
incredibly similarly, Bjork was part of a pump band with her boyfriend and like every band from either Iceland or some neighboring areas, we're so far removed from English that it was revolutionary if one of them started just going to the trouble to write their songs in English from the start and then sing them and learn them that way. rather than trying to do and after the fact translation. they just happened to do this at the time, the sugar cubes, when that was exactly what was needed. the record companies over here absolutely love the fact that it was easy to market right away even though it was weird but for a certain demographic including mine at the time, this was huge. it was bigger than huge. It was like Deus. 😀
I remember hearing a Dreidel song.
A dreidel is a four-sided spinning top with a Hebrew letter printed on each side.
There's nothing so satisfying as rocking a Megadeth shirt and listening to ABBA!! ❤😎
Funny enough, even though Abba is Swedish, they actually made a Spanish version of this song. Another one of their hit songs with a bit of a Spanish vibe is 'Fernando'.
ABBA sang a lot of their songs in English, Spanish and their native Swedish language. Growing up in a Mexican household in LA I heard all the Spanish versions before I found out they sang in English too.
Lol the juxtaposition of ABBA and Lex wearing a MegaDeth shirt I just find that extremely humorous.
Classic ABBA beautiful singing And a very catchy tune
Your faces are so serious... especially his. Yes itäs a sad song, but it's also about hope
sounds like a march. ABBA always brought new sounds and their armonies are the best of anyother group in popular music.
It’s from an old Swedish type of folk music “Polska” that was played (and still is) for countryside celebrations, the couple hold each other and dance around, it’s very festive and not as stiff as the arithmetic dances of old age.
One of THE very greatest pieces of music EVER!!
I've only recently discovered ABBA, like you cats, within the last few years, and I love them. The two husbands write and perform the music with some other musicians, while the two wives sing the songs beautifully and in harmony, while yet another person, in most cases, writes the lyrics. Thanks, cats!
You made me laugh , better write Their two husbands in this day and age and their two wives )))))
@@richardmoore419 Good point. But then, the two couples were married back in the '70s when that kind of clarity was unnecessary.
@@charlesberton2581 For an oldy like me yes but I don't know about these confused young ones that have been brain washed
@@richardmoore419 33 days to end Clown World.
Polka. The genre you looking for is Polka. ABBA had a gift for traditionals turned pop. Check out their song 'Fernando', quite similar. Great analysis! 👍
...🍀🙂✌
Love this group. I was 18 when they came out. 2 married couples & the name ABBA was taken from the first initial of each of their first names. The band is Swedish. Also, I had that hairstyle of the blonde when they were popular. God help me. LOL
I was 33 yo😂
Swedish band, ABBA...such talent..amazing....The guys write and compose all their songs and the girls sing up a storm. You could google the lyric and find out the story.
Brad & Lex, you’ll love their “Waterloo”, “Fernando”& "The Winner Takes It All"!!
Great songs, Great band 👌A joy to listen to 👏👏
You do ABBA, I am here. Every time.
ABBA in their ascent - glorious!
It never ceases to amaze me how similar mariachi music is to some European folk styles, particularly German and Scandinavian.
One of their best imho…. It’s basically a folk song …. That repeated piano at the end gives me goosebumps whenever I hear it…. Love it!
You guys should react to more ABBA…
"Knowing Me, Knowing You", "Mamma Mia", "The Winner Takes It All", "Fernando", "Waterloo", "Voulez-Vous", "Lay All Your Love On Me", "Super Trouper", "I Have a Dream", "Money, Money, Money", "SOS"
💃🏻🕺🏼
The Bowie song that sound familiar (piano), is from his album "Hunky Dory" called "Oh! You Pretty Things".
Love the harmony at the chorus, and your discussion of Chiquitita very interesting. ABBA had phenomenal success globally I think. Do wonder what your review and reaction to Heilung 's LIFA or Futhorck will be -- they have a very sound from the bubbly gaiety of ABBA ... Heilung has received alot of air time with the release of their music video Anoana, which I highly recommend as well. LIFA and Futhorck are live performances, however, which will allow you to experience their primal shamanistic essence!🙂 One thing more: Maria Franz, of Heilung, is an incredible vocalist!
Yes. All my Mexican and Guatemalan friends grew up with this song in their countries. I played it one day at work and they were losing their minds! It was awesome!🙏💛☯️🌞💯😃
This song was number 1 in Mexico for 36 weeks.ABBA 🐈⬛🐈♥️🫂
@@larsnilsson6821 AWESOME!!🤘😃🤘
ABBA recorded this in Spanish too. It's on their Spanish album. So you might very well be hearing your neighbour playing that version..
They sing this in Spanish too. They have a whole album in Spanish
Love this song and the Spanish version is definitely worth checking out.
Rockin a Megadeth T shirt and appreciating Abba, so nice to see.
I'm an old 60's and 70's rocker and I loved ABBA. Good music.
Mother giving a pep talk to her child. That's how I see it.
Abba were so good at coming up with melodies for pop and rock songs. This song has been covered many times, the latest acoustic, folk version just three days ago by a talented Romanian group - ua-cam.com/video/x2Iacjg_QSU/v-deo.html
Thank you so much for sharing that. Their version is Fantastic! I just subscribed to their channel. I think their name is "Shut Up & Kiss Me". Cool!
Chiquitita is not a name of a person. It's Spanish for the phrase “very little girl” or “little one". The singer is singing to a friend who is downcast and sorrowful trying to encourage her to look at the brighter side of life and not let their sorrow to enchain and control them.
One of my favourites by Abba.
Oh god. ABBA. Commercial pop that I instinctively dislike, yet find myself grudgingly dragged by my fingernails to have to admit it’s just awesome. Those amazing catchy riffs. Those astonishing singalong choruses. I hate myself for appreciating their sheer brilliance 🤷🏻♂️
There is so much good pop. I agree that one has to begrudgingly admit it, just on principles.
😀Definition of a snob. Someone who dislikes something because it's liked by too many people.
Music is music mate, if you like it just take it as it is
One of their best songs! ♥
You should try Frida--I Know There's Something Going On. Such a good hit.
I've always loved this song, but when I watch the video I can't help but laugh when it zooms out after the touching opening verses to reveal the monstrous goofy snowman.
Simply the best band ever
This is ABBA, most of their lyrics are sad but they sound happy. Chiquitita means little girl in Spanish. ABBA are one of the best pop group of all time.
Polka with an impossible beat, holy guacamole they were something, smart lyrics too, their songs meant something, for a few years they out Beatled the Beatles, they were Sweden's biggest import, for real, nobody can put an accurate number of album sales, anywhere between 300 and 600 million, they could have been the Kings and Queens of all Europe.
Chiquitita means little girl in spanish.
You probably WERE hearing your neighbour play this song. It was also recorded in Spanish.
Spanish version by Abba can be found here: ua-cam.com/video/Z4oTvuow9cc/v-deo.html
It has a traditional Swedish folk music sound to me.
Best harmonies ever
You should definitely listen to "The Day Before You Came". It's hauntingly beautiful.
