  • I hope you enjoy this narrated Madeira, Portugal Nuns valley Guide (also called Curral das Freiras).
As we walk from the Eira do Serrado viewpoint to Curral das Freiras town.
Curral das Freiras ('Nun's Valley') is a village nestling between mountains in the heart of Madeira.
Eira do Serrado and Paredão are excellent locations to see the magnificent views of this parish.
The Nun's valley is one of the island’s most picturesque areas. The bus from Funchal to the Valley of the Nuns is no. 81.
Half-day tours from Funchal generally combine the valley with the Eira do Serrado viewpoint and Câmara de Lobos, where you can sample the Madeiran Poncha. Full-day excursions include a visit to the top of Arieiro Peak.

Nice one Mike. We're taking our walking boots with us when we go next week so we can do more of the levada and off the beaten track walks. The ponta sao lourenco was one of our favourites.

Very nice. But just for clarity and exactness' sake, the Portuguese word for Valley is Vale, not Curral. I can see why Curral das Freiras is generally translated into English as Nuns Valley because, obviously, it is a valley, but Curral in Portuguese means the same as a Corral in American English (and Kraal, in Afrikaans), i.e. an animal enclosure.
