Madeira, Old road to 'Nun's Valley (Eira do Serrado - Curral das Freiras).

- The road is built on steep mountain walls. The road was narrow and often fell under landslides. The road was built in the early 1960s. Today, the valley is much easier to access thanks to a 2.4 km long tunnel cut into the mountain. The new road was completed at the beginning of the 2000s, when the old and very winding road connection was abandoned.
The old road starts about 500 meters before the Eira do Rerrado hotel.
The old road section has two tunnels, the length of the first of which is 353 m. The length of the second tunnel is 257 m.

Thanks for sharing! I did this walk 2 years ago. It shows how (In the words of an old mining friend) "nature always wins". Although the fallen rocks look scary they are fairly normal for every road (and levada) on the island so I wasn't that scared on the day I did it. I've been into the Curral das Freiras 5 times now and never through the new road tunnel!. The levada from Funchal still remains to do!
Do you mean Levada do Curral ? That levada may be in bad shape.

I don't remember the time. The old road is 3.2 km long. In total, Eira do Serrado - Curral das Freiras is about 4 km.
