babies are really just weird looking lol. also, it could be partly the creases along their mouth due to the chubby cheeks that may be similar to old people's wrinkles in certain styles
I got a local artist to draw my children at similar ages. Not quite this level of art, but still very dear to my heart. He looked a very cheeky chappy hahaha. Great subject 😃

The Catholic Church did allow some movement beyond your parents profession at various times but it too would mostly adapt to the cultural standards of the era it was in.
It was painted by Alessandro Allori who might have disliked it, was going to change it because there are other portraits and self portraits of bronzino that are in better shape. The only negativity I could find was a comment about some members didn’t like his portrayal of them as cold and “In 1547, Bronzino (along with a number of other artists) was expelled from the Academia Fiorentina for unknown reasons.” But I think it was just not well taken care of as he is considered a rediscovered artist more appreciated now. The description is: Alessandro Allori, santissima trinità, 1567-1571 circa, ritratto dei maestri, bronzino
My parents took us every year to Florence during the holidays and this was one of my favourite paintings, also because it looks so much like my youngest brother when he was that age. I still have the postcard. He is such a bundle of joy.

The body can be painted separately from the face, and the face can be studied on multiple separate occasions to create an accurate sketch or a study, from which the face is then portrayed. The Medici family was loaded as heck, they could afford that

Why do you think malls still have photography studios and the child specific portrait industry has exploded? If you mean paintings well, no one wants to deal with bored crying babies for that long and in this economy? Oh no.
That really stuck out to me, as well. I do think, you have to go through a trial period before you're allowed to fully commit to becoming a priest. Would have been interesting to hear, how he got to this position at such a young age.
