Actually the movie is named so because in 1931 our freedom fighters Rajguru, Sukhdev and Bhagat Singh were singing this song while marching towards the gallows to be hanged... And in the movie they are playing those characters

I always used to flex in school, that I don't cry in movies and I used to tease my friend who cried while watching movies. But then on one fine day I watched rang de basanti and I cried like a baby I clearly remember the moment how automatically the tears started rolling down in the climax where the gang started uniting after the incident. It was very heartbreaking and gut wrenching.
