I will never forgive Nintendo for not releasing Virtual Boy games on the 3DS Virtual Console. With the 3DS probably being Nintendo's last ever 3D console, it was the one chance to get Virtual Boy games on a more accessible platform, and that chance is pretty much gone.

Why don't they make new games for the Virtual Boy, Nintendo 64, NES, SNES? Nintendo acts like those are dead systems but I now have renewed interest in these systems. I just bought a SEGA Genesis Flashback from ATGames (it has 85 games, some Genesis, some Mastersystem, some 3rd party or something.)
VB has dual analogue sticks. 3DS has one. It would *NOT* work.
I keep seeing this comment on VB videos and none seems to consider this.
janX9 the VirtualBoy didn’t have any analog sticks. It had dual d-pads. The New 3DS had a right analog stick (available as an add on for the previous 3DS) which could have been used, though not all games would have needed it.
I've always played the virtual boy laying down. Anyway else would be uncivilized.

I used to play it in class back in the days. And when the teacher asked what the heck i was doing i just told him it was my optical aid i had to wear because i went to the eye doctor in the morning. My class mates played along, so it turned out to be a pretty nice period. :)

Someone actually made a real HMD for the Virtual Boy. Quite frankly I'd like to do that myself if I had the ingenuity to do so (and the confidence drilling into the sides of the Virtual Boy won't kill any of the electronics).
Got my Virtual Boy for $40 last year. It has a scratch on the lens but... I have a Virtual Boy!

If you emulate the virtual boy, you can change the colors from black/red to gameboy colors.
My friend modded his for color and hacked the whole library to be in color! It has to be seen to be believed!

I remember way back in the day when my parents bought me a Virtual Boy, I thought it was the coolest thing around. I didn't have alot of friends and only had an NES at the time, which I was kind of to dumb to really know how to play, so I played alot of my Virtual Boy. In fact I still have that same Virtual Boy sitting with my Other games with almost all the US games inside the old Blockbuster rental case, Who remembers Rental Stores renting consoles Good times, and ever now and then then I still play it, bit hard some times since my legs are broken and have been broken fro ages. I know its not the greatest thing but its a part of who I am and I have fun with it and really I think thats all that matters is that you have fun.

I have really wanted a Virtual Boy for years. I have great memories of playing VB Wario Land back in the 90’s.
When I was a kid, I saw a large spider crawl into one of the cracks of my virtual boy. i never wanted to use it anymore after that for fear of a spider crawling onto my face when I played it, then my mom threw it out after i went away to college. Years later I think it's time I get it again.

My family woke up on Xmas morning to find one under the tree without us kids even knowing what it was. I loved it. Trouble I had was that I suffer from migraines on almost a daily basis and found that if I played the VB for any length of time, it would cause me to have a worse migraine than I had already, or to have one in general if I had not been dealing with one. I will say this, It was amazing to lay in bed, with the VB laying on my face, headphones plugged in, using the stand attached to keep it oriented right and play through the night. I have never been able to sleep more than three hours in a row, so having something that I could do that would not keep my brother awake, or anyone else in the house was the bee's knees. I happened to really enjoy Mario Tennis, btw, lol. I sometimes wish I knee what happened to our VB. I am sure it is stuffed away on the family property somewhere, either in the attic or out in the pole barn.
I love the VB, awesome homebrew community as well. I have a complete US set and Fishbone, and Hyper Fighting too.
If you can pick only one color red is not a good choice. The army faced this choice with night vision and found out green is the easiest on the human eye and went with that color.
It's a shame the bigger youtubers when talking about Virtual Boy never have the more interesting japanese games like Insmouse no Yakata or Space Squash, so the mainstream people are always left with the same view of the console. Not that the japanese games would be enough to sway a hater but it would help a little bit at least.

I remember picking one of these up from Gamestop for $35 NEW. The sales person tried to talk me out of it because it was a dead system. I told him I just gor 7 games for it from Blockbuster on clearance for 50 cents each! So why not? Earlier this year I ran across it in my basement ( in 3 broken parts) and the games. Sold the parts for about $40 each and the games ( as a bundle) for $450 on eBay!

just played a virtual boy in super potato with my son for the first time in my life today.. played teleroboxer... and was pleasantly surprised! it was great and my six year old loved it. now he wants one for christmas :D

I am one of the few people who is a die hard virtual boy fan, it doesn't hurt my eyes or give me headaches, I can play it for hours on end and still do to this day. I've owned my console for 23 years and have always wished there were more games made for it.

I remember loving the Wario game on the Virtual Boy. I hope Nintendo releases these games for cheap on the 3DS for the Virtual Console. Mario Tennis was okay, Teleroboxer was cool because it felt "virtual," and I'll admit I beat Red Alarm so many times (probably because there weren't many games, so I played the same ones over and over). 10:40 Sprites are the term I believe you're looking for. They were very common in early 3D games, because they provided a 3D "feel" while not as demanding as full 3D models.

I was working my first real job at Babbage's when this came out and we had a model in for people to try. I tried it once got a headache after just a couple minutes and never touched it again. I don't think we sold a single one.

I remember being so excited when I saw this available to rent this from Blockbuster, and I played it for about 10 minutes before I started getting a headache. After those 10 minutes I never played it again and returned the piece of crap a day early. I think I rented Teleroboxer, Mario Tennis, and Red Alarm and they were all horrible to play. Worst console ever.
Decimus Junius Brutus Albinus. i actually got this p.o.s at walmart for 10$ and about 5 games for 20$ when it got discontinued i only remember two of the games i had and they were wario land and mario tennis. but i played the hell out of those 2 games. i was probably 9 or 10 when i got it. edit to add that i had mario clash as well i couldnt remember till they showed it.
Decimus Junius Brutus Albinus The Virtual Boy is fun for collectors. It looks cool on a shelf and it is pretty easy to get a near complete collection of games due to the library being so small.
The R Zone is WORSE, and maybe eve the RCA Studio II, the Virtual Boy isn't even CLOSE to those two, the Virtual Boy is just pretty mediocre.
On the eye blocker you can peel off the outer silky layer and then it will be much nicer looking and easier to clean. It peels off 100% clean and looks great.

If you have a modded Nintendo 3DS, there is a Virtual Boy emulator called Red Viper. You can use the 3d slider, no goggles needed. The effect is intense.

These were 20 bucks iirc, at TRUS back in '96 on clearance. I bought 2, played 1, the other never left the box and it's buried somewhere. Mario Tennis was fun, "Wario Land" was quite good, and if that "Red Alarm" begins with "T&E Soft Presents.." vocally, that was kinda fun too. Games were $5, went down to $2, and the battery pack adapter was $2 as well.

I consider myself lucky to have ACTUALLY played this thing in 1995 during the very short time frame it was active. I was a kid, so I had no money to buy it even if I'd wanted to, but I played the in-store demo display in - I believe - Best Buy. I wasn't looking for it, just happened across it - played it. I think the game was maybe the boxing one or Mario Tennis or both. I remember, even as a child, coming away from it with no real desire to HAVE one, but it was interesting to my young mind t try the experience. "Why would they make you stick your face in here? This hurts my neck and eyes." - ALREADY I was thinking about how awkward llonger gaming sessions would be. "Why is it all red? This is dumb." - Such was my thought process as a kid encountering it in 1995. In my mind back then - AND now - I'd rather keep playing SNES than that. BUT I'm glad I WAS there to experience this weird piece of gaming history that most people 30 and under will never try, and in its heyday no less.

Okay, so I loved Mario Tennis, but I LOVED Red Alarm. I played the shit out of that, along with Galactic Pinball. I would probably say my top 4 Virtual Boy games were Galactic Pinball, Red Alarm, Mario Tennis, and Teleroboxer, in that order. Mainly because I only owned those 4 games.

Virtual Boy emulation is actually pretty good. I use a N64 controller (with a USB adaptor) to replicate the 2 D-Pads (works really well), and red/blue 3D glasses (which can be had for super cheap) will handle the 3D effects perfectly.

Virtual Boy Wario Land really should have been remade for 3DS, but I feel the ship may have passed on that.
that's actually my first console I sold on eBay quite a long time ago. I made $250 with the blockbuster case with Red alarm,tennis water world and vertical force and the famous Jack bro's USA style.No smart phones back then for me.It taught me eBay though.

You didn't mention the ribbon cable problem! It causes lines to go out and is something that someone NEEDS to know about before buying and that even a functional system can develop it unexpectedly.
We had a boxed system in my college's game history library that worked fine for years until one day it developed lines after just sitting in its box.
It's kind of hard to fix, but not impossible.
