You’re actually correct. This song describes the industry and social inequality as a whole. It can be both towards the male and female point of view. It can be interpreted as a relationship as well. But Simon clarified that this was about how the industry treats women. Simon was an ex kpop idol. So he knows what he’s talking about. Some “men” thought this was very toxic and took the message the wrong way. They thought it was women mistreating or using men as puppets. They forgot that 3 out of the 4 are men including Simon that wrote this song
I do believe it’s the industry, but also your life in general. The message behind this song is that you are the one controlling your life. Chisa kept repeating during the interview, how you look at the world can change your life, perception influences your experience.
Simon, their producer, was in a boy group, has a up close and personal understanding of how The Industry works and it can be like personal relationships. IMO and only mine, he's the captain navigating our girls through the galactic goo of the music industry and I pray he never changes. The hands at the end and during video is the Alphaz sign; wolf symbolized with index and pinky up, middle and ring touching the thumb pad. Alphaz gon' ride or die [left right]. It's crazy to me how these ladies haven't missed and the fact that none of their music sounds like the other, but they have the XG touch.
Their budget for the MVs for the New DNA album must've been crazy.. Production quality is crazy.
Whenever you get to GRL GVNG make sure to watch the MV and the dance practice. Not sure if budget was an issue but the MV only has half the song. The MV is INSANE though.

Simon gave an interview when this was released. It's a metaphor about how the industry overseas treats their artists. Simon was in a group himself and wanted to prove that it is possible to create a group and train them in a safe and nurturing environment. By doing so, you have elite artists that are capable of anything while still being humble and good people. Simon is actually the character in blue that blows up, it signifies how he had to break out of the industries standards for particularly girls so that they could make waves across the world.
I believe it's about the industry.

Ha, there is really a lot of symbolism going on in this music video (and it is a bit separated from the lyrics or not ... but others have already commented on that). All kudos to @exScythed who put this together first to my knowledge, I'm just reiterating.
- First, take note that our girls start all separated and alone. They were lowered into Buddhist Hell by the thread of a spider (the starting scene with Chisa hanging in the air represents this). The figures you see in the very beginning are wearing traditional Buddhist headdresses. XG girls are surrounded by spirits who are caught in a cycle of reincarnation that never ends. (In Buddhism the “spider’s thread” is a reference to how Buddha took the thread of a spider in Heaven and lowered it down to Hell so that a criminal can climb up from Hell to Paradise. Therefore the thread of a spider is a symbol of slight hope aka a silver lining and of fragility. In the story it’s stated that the thread descended through “many layers of sky and clouds.”)
- The XG girls look on sadly as many spirits attempt to reach Paradise and fail, exploding into nothingness (Chisa looking down from her perch represents this.)
- Even though the XG girls are hailed as goddesses by the other spirits (represented by the way the other spirits bow to them) they realize they still can’t reach Paradise alone aka achieve enlightenment.
- This changes when the XG girls find each other in death, realizing that their meeting was fate in order for them to reach Paradise together (they are tied together by the “red string of fate” and “hesonoo” is Japanese for umbilical chord.) This is represented four times in the video and twice in the chorus of the song; When Juria is running to help a spirit and meets Hinata there’s a close up of her eye where we see her having a vision of an explosion, when Harvey (who has black teeth which in Japan was a common practice amongst women because it represents a “woman with virtues”) meets Jurin, when the XG girls rap/dance together as a group with the drums, and when a wayward spirit’s failure to achieve enlightenment causes an explosion which knocks everyone down leaving only XG standing strong.
- There’s also several fourth wall breaks (first Hinata, then Jurin) showing that they’ve broken away from the circle the spirits are stuck walking in. They know the Truth aka achieved enlightenment - they look at us, and they know we are watching. Also, it is only in the later two choruses the girls adlib together. The first chorus, when they haven’t "officially" met in the video yet, has none.
- Before XG goes, they bless one of the spirits who is heavily implied to be pregnant with a girl (the moon is associated with womanhood ... please don't ask how a spirit in hell gets pregnant) and has earned the right to be reincarnated.
- The XG girls take a literal leap of faith together and successfully reach Paradise, symbolized by their new, white outfits.
Hope this helps for understanding what exactly is going on. And whoever came up with all this (most likely Simon) ... you're a freaking genius.

This song, to me, is about the censorship of the S Korean government in music and how involved they are in the route "KPop" is going. Read the lyrics without the music and it becomes clear. Simon hates the censorship and he's making it known with this song.

hand sign = fox = wolf. (you'll find out more in the docu-series). For me, this song caters to the kl-pop standards tune, which is no where near what they are coming up with. Just sprinkle XG on it and its called Puppet Show!
