Commissars are pretty much the definition of "Getting shit done". However I should point out that few are stupid enough to stick sround and fight off overwhelming numbers (Especially if it means retreating to a strategic point). Then again those stupid enought to continue fighting overwhelming odds when retreat is an option are guarentee to be axed off either by their own men or the enemy forces coming at them. The only reason why any commissar would want to fight on is if it's a last stand or (In the case of the TAU mainly) surrender. The Emperor expects more than sheer devotion. Hell I think it's legitimately heresy if any imperial officer (No matter who they are) wastes away men as they're considered resources.

heh the Commissars assigned to the Death Korps kinda have to see to it that if neccessary the Death Korps retreats as ordered, and the ones assigned to the Catachan Jungle Fighters have to be careful about executing someone cuz if they do they're next unless they have a REALLY good reason, the Catachans don't take kindly to their battlesiblings being killed

They are usually found on Rogue Trader ships and sometimes the Imperial Guard will use abhumans but it wouldn't surprise me if they were a lot more common. Some inquisitors carry around demonshosts as assistants

ogryn are like ratlings, or navigators etc. all abhuman. I guess watchers in the dark, unless they are daemons, lots of flora and fauna, like ambulls etc, (it is sentient aliens that are usually shunned) eh... not that many.

Suggestion: Could you guys go over the Imperial Guardsman's Uplifting Primer to do an in depth look into daily standardised Astra Militarum life? I really liked that the book. It even had all the prayers for reloading, priming grenades and to divert incoming artillery.

So I'm putting together a Death Korps siege Regiment and I've set aside two figures to represent the Commissar. The standard is exactly what one would expect and will represent him either on foot or mounted. I will also have a replacement Commissar for those game demanding a sense of humor. This is Commissar 'Kitten', complete with a kitten on his shoulder and a cat and ferret on his base. After all, nothing says death Korps like a cute fuzzy kitten.

my commisar is commisar maxilon, who as a commisar Cadet was assigned to a PDF figthing the tau empire but when his Lord commisar commander was killed by tau sniper drone, he kept the fight going for his men, taking up is former lords power sword and rallying his men to a full scale charge against the tau breaking the line and claiming the day for the emperor, after gaining his rank as commisar. he was assined to the 5th Uksore regiment right on the edge of tau space, given a new undissaplined regiment to mold in to true soldier. his first action was killing the regimental commander, a fat nobleman with no place in the guard. forever solidifying his place in the regement as not a man to be feared, he still leads from the front wielding the sword of his fallen commander

People always seem to forget: summary execution is always as a last resort. Even so, the Commissar has to choose carefully who to execute, cause executing the wrong person may actually make matters worse, especially cause this puts the squad/platoon/company a man down automatically. Yes, human lives are forfeit in the Imperium, but like any currency, it must be spent wisely. Their job is to enforce morale and maintain the fighting spirit of their attached unit first and foremost, and if executing someone who either has wavered or deemed incompetent is needed to keep the men going, then it must be done. A Commissar that executes troopers right and left with the reasoning being "I don't like how he looks" is not going to last long with his or her deployment.

Commissars and Generals are known for killing more humans and demi-humans than any single species in Warhammer 40k.
