  • Hello and welcome to Portugal on a shoestring. We are Brian and Diane and in 2023 we bought a 120 year old abandoned property in central Portugal. Join us as we begin a new life, renovating our house and managing our land on a shoestring budget. Watch as we learn new skills, make mistakes and discover our new home.
    We welcome any and all questions and suggestions. One thing that we found difficult in our preparations for moving to Portugal was finding our about costs and processes, so we would like to be as open as possible and will try to answer your questions as honestly and openly as possible.
    huggy112@yahoo.co.uk
    On this week's video we finally manage to get the plasterboard up in the kitchen renovation and Diane propogates new strawberry plants. We also give a quick insight into our grey water harvesting plans.
    We hope you enjoy and hope to hear from you all soon with all your very welcome and interesting comments, questions and suggestions

    Hi from a South Australian who is looking into coming to Portugal to make a disability pension go further 👋🇦🇺
    The runners off the big strawberry plants are called daughters, and letting them root into soil in their own pots was a good decision 👌🏼😁 When their roots are fully established, you can snip them off from mother plant and start cycle all over again 👌🏼

    Hi Brian and Diane. Yes I will need a rewire. But I'll probably use a sparky if I can get one. Electrics is something I don't mess around with. Or plumbing.. Ps you should get some sun on those milky whites sticking out of your shorts lol I'm the same,,

  • @owenp65

    You're gaining skills with the gardening Diane, over here (uk) they tend to say that a strawberry plant lasts about three to four years in respect of giving a good crop. So once you have a rotation going of new baby plants to replenish the old you'll be laughing. Also try not to have too many babies from one plant in one go. Let it build up its strength. Perfect climate for growing allsorts. 👍🏼

    Great idea for the gray water recycling , do you use eco soap products for washing-up and laundry to recycle that water too ? Have you got water catchment for the rain water from the roof and do you use water from the stream to water your fruit trees ? Another guy I watch uses 6 litre water flagons up ended with a tiny cut in the lids to drip water his fruit trees

    • @Portugalonashoestring
      @Portugalonashoestring  Місяць тому

      Thank you 😊 We already use 6 litre bottles around the trees, the stream is a little small to easily extract water but we do have an open well on the property which we plan to use eventually when we get the time to sort a pump and power to it. Like with most Portuguese property our house does not have gutters so catching rainwater is not as simple as it sounds, plus we don't need water when it's raining and we couldn't store enough to last more than a day or two anyway.
      We do not use any "eco" rip off chemicals. We checked with the royal horticultural society and they said that standard detergents, washing powder, soaps and shampoos etc do no harm at all once in the soil as part of a grey water system and biological washing powder can even have a beneficial effect on the soil chemistry. 🙂

    Hello Brian and Diane, 😊
    How are you? How are you dealing with the hot weather and the fires around in Portugal?
    Hope all is well and safe.
    The plaster boards are looking good. We also call them dry wall or back in the day, it was called sheet rock.
    Brian, the way you put it up is the same way my husband does it. Lol He adapts a piece of a 2x4 horizontally to a longer 2x4x vertically.
    He does it alone too. 👍
    I’m so glad you’re putting in insulation, you’ll definitely feel grateful in the wintertime.
    Will you also be insulating the walls? How much is a piece of plaster board and a pack of insulation?
    When living in Portugal, years ago, I remember the cold, humid and wet days and our kitchen tiled walls would be dripping water from the cold indoor humidity due to the weather and lack of insulation.😬
    All rooms in the house would feel damp as well. The bedsheets would feel cold and humid, almost a wet feeling, getting into bed. 😳 🥶
    The one thing I always said to my husband, when living there, was that it was too bad the houses were not insulated.
    I would say that I’d prefer the snowy and cold Canada -30 days, rather then the 10 degrees rainy and cold days of Portugal. Homes in Canada are cozy and warm. 😊
    Back then plaster boards and insulation existed but they were hardly ever used by anyone. Too expensive. People just lived in cold and damp houses.
    Today they are more affordable and available, so people are more inclined to use them.
    Wishing you success with your renovation.
    Especially, wishing you a warm, cozy and happy home! 😊 🏡
    Take care.
    Sam 🌻

      Thank you, 2 x 4!? We would need to get a mortgage to be able to afford 2 x 4 here 🤣🤣 plasterboard is around €11-12 for 2.5m x 1.2m and 100mm loft insulation roll is about €40. 👍🏻

      Not too bad, two foot thick stone walls keep the interior at a comfortable temperature (23-26°C) when it has been 36-40° outside 🙂

    Hi Brian and Diane, fixing up that ceiling was not easy. Tiring working with arms up. Tiling next, and with each task completed the satisfaction of doing them your way. Grey water project so good. Amazing the amount of water used to wash ones hands.I have plastic bowls in my bathroom basin. I decant into bucket and reuse water in loo! Each litre has to be paid for! Diane, lovely to harvest your own strawberries! Seen your resident snake lately, or has he decided the humans around are too close for comfort and left...i hope so!! 🤔🙄🙏

    Hi guys,if you ever want to escape all that mudding and painting why not use plywood on your ceiling all the joins can be covered with 2❌4s. Save a lot of work and little chance of it breaking when lifting it up. Just a suggestion.

    • @Portugalonashoestring
      @Portugalonashoestring  Місяць тому

      Thanks for the suggestion but the cost of even 1/4 inch plywood is about four times the cost of plasterboard (drywall) and each 2.5 m of 2x4 is about €15(20 if you want it planed smooth).

      I am assuming that you are in the US or Canada because they are the only countries where using wood as a building material is anywhere near cost effective. Even in the UK the cost of timber is eye watering compared to north American and Portugal is even worse! 🙂

    That joint most likely is going to have cracks after a while. Since you left a gap in between the panels. If you check the joint in the video has a bump. That bump shouldn’t be there. That means air behind the plaster. The panels should touch each others and you can do an angle cut of 30-35degree on the edge of the panel.

    • @Portugalonashoestring
      @Portugalonashoestring  Місяць тому +2

      Thank you for the advice, on vertical wall plasterboard it doesn't crack when done the way I have done it but I have never done a ceiling so time will tell 😁

      Hi Brian and Diane. You reminded me how much I used to hate doing boarding. Thankfully I didn't do much. In the trade we call those props deadmen.. Now that you've been in portugal for a while. Can you think of anything that you would have brought from the UK. Not the big things. Just small things you could get in the car like paint I know you said it was dear and not that good over there. Or is it just a waste of time bringing things apart from your tools,

    Good skills you have to restore your new home will you be plastering the back walls where you have the pipe coming out for the kitchen I was in Central Portugal looking at property near Castilo branco I didn't find anything yet when you fit your soakaway will you fit a inspection chamber service valves are good idea for water and a cut off switch you can pick up easy is it hard for you to get bits sent from uk

    • @Portugalonashoestring
      @Portugalonashoestring  Місяць тому

      That's the plan! The whole house needs to be re-rendered but it will be done a section at a time. Having stuff sent over from the UK is fairly easy but everything is more expensive because of shipping and customs duties. Just not worth it unless it is something you just cannot get here🙂
