That's because as a spread we don't get time to clean em. I worked on site for 40yrs as a plasterer and using sand/cement backing with carlite finish or lime. The speed went up over the years as new plasters came out, like toughcoat/hardwall and so on. With speed came cutbacks, socket boxes, ceiling rose holes and so forth were left as-is because trowelling over 80 metres in one go gave no time to stop, let alone clean boxes out. As I approach my 65th birthday I have to say that these jobs are few and far between,,you simply cannot get them all the time,BUT this fella is a tradesman, clean work and is trying to help people so rock on and keep the videos coming
My old dad found plastering quite taxing on his body in the last 10 years of his work life, so he tried to specialise in doing the small jobs that no other plasterers really wanted. He had ties with electricians, window fitters and plumbers and basically went around filling chases and small voids after the workmen and snagging. He said in the last years of working he made the most money ever for the least amount of work. If he didn't opt to do this sort of work, he is convinced his body would be a wreck in his old age.
They were a different Breed back then. I have x4 Brothers. We all all Spreads. My old man is a spread. He was 76 Last week. And still got a trowel in his hand. He's slowed down now. Only smaller jobs. But up until 4/⁵ yrs ago. He would still be plastering Chimneys off roof ladders. Bringing down Gable ends on his own with a labourer 💪👊👏
I've just signed up for a home DIY course having recently bought a project of a house. I've never plastered before and it's a little bit daunting but I'm really looking forward to having a go. These videos are brilliant. Thank you💪
Those courses are a waste of time and money they will only teach you what the guy in video will teach you for free. Just skimming is easy enough as long as you have sealed the wall properly you will have plenty of time to fanny around with it just start with a small wall like a chimney breast
@@colhughes3892That's not the best advice! Some People have never never touched a tool in their lives let alone put a mix on! The most important method to take from this video is to apply two coats, 2nd coat little milker than the first make sure the skim coat does not have any little hard lumps in the bag when mixing 2nd coat, smooth first coat before you put on 2nd .
This is exactly what I did before starting to use bonding half time. 100% it’s easier to gauge how fast you want it to go off with cement. The darker the mix is the quicker it goes off 👌🏼

Good job. 👍 Every aspect considered. ⭐ My apparent award winning plasterer moaned about every room, took matters into his own hands after being given specific instructions, complained about and argued with other trades on site, set bent beads, stopped 3-5 inches from the floor, left gaps between the wall and ceiling, and covered all floors, cables, pipes, and windows in plaster and then left without cleaning. Just earned himself a new award from me... #1 worst plasterer ever. 🏆
Why did he seem to be an award winner? Did he make this claim? Plasterers are bound by codes and regulations to follow certain standards. It is not the plasterer's prerogative to leave a job incomplete or to spread plaster where it does not belong. If I were you, then I would seek recourse.

There are too many bullshitters out there and not enough guys telling the truth.
I love how you consider the next tradesman's job and make sure you don't make it hard for them. Nobody seems to do that nowadays, they are just in and out as fast as possible doing the bare minimum they can get away with.
Great video tanx for the upload,if ever you decide to come of the tools you could open up a plastering school, you have a great in depth way of explaining things👍👌
Love the videos! Especially the extra bits you do for the following tradesman.. as a decorator a lot of the time I see things left for the decorator to do. So nice touch on that. Keep up the good videos 👊
As my job was a tiler for many years, not all plasters care about the tiler coming in after them. Yes they plaster and cover the walls, but how many plasters, make sure that the plastering they have done is straight and flat for the tiler ,answer none ,they don't care as long as they have their money. This guy is a nice guy, he got 600 pounds to plaster this kitchen, then the unites draws and everything else is fitted, that will cost around between 1,500 to 2000 pounds, then the tiler goes in and prices his jobs ,and the number of times ,i had people say how much, when i was asking around 200 to 250 pounds to tiler it. well you have to explain most of the time that ,the plaster has covered the wall ,but it is not straight, so it is not a case of just throwing them up. I bet thee is a lot of tilers out there who will tell you the same. But saying that in the end i went on a 6 week course ,and did the plastering as well myself and the walls were straight.
im a sparky who does a little bit of plastering, mainly I started out doing it to learn how to fix my own fuckups but its really quite handy to know. I've found its hard to find a good plasterer or good tiler here in Australia, but fuck doing tiling I'll leave that for the tilers
Oh man. I was a plasterer for 10yrs. It was torture 😂 earnt 1k a week site plastering. But I lost my mind. Retrained as a bricklayer. Similar earnings. Wasn't as hard...I mean...hard but not as testing as plastering. Now...I'm a construction project manager. University as a mature student was difficult. But it was worth it. More money less work...physically of course.
The SBR is still tacky because the painted parts are vinyl silk and slower the pull it in I’ve got much different things I rather do but another thing and not green grit but similar and hardly any cost at all and give you the advantage of some suction always a big plus when skimming 👍👍best wishes to you all and every plasterer
Worlds changed…I plastered for 45 years,I’ve an 18 year old who earns that an hour as a influencer on social media…but good to see you give advice and leave it good for any other tradesmen
Plastering is just about the only thing I can’t do to save my life. Love watching you guys do that as it looks so easy. Only one question is it normal to put two coats of finish plaster ? Cleaning out the socket boxes you are giving plasterers a bad name. I thought the idea was to hide them so we need to get the metal detector out
Good professional work ethic my son AND nice ‘quiet’ hands on the trowel for a big guy 👏💪👍 If the customer doesn’t like the price for quality work - then let the ‘rough’ squad in!!
Its one hell of a skill i take my hat off to them....not one id want to be doing past the age of 55 then again i wouldn't want to be a bricklayer past the age of 50 ...in my later years I'd want to be an electrician or plumber fixing leaking taps and toilets 😅 for an easy life
Great video for new spreads coming into the trade. 1 question.....you said about using an extra hawk full of plaster to go down to the pipes under the window, why didn't you use another hawk full again to completely plaster the 1st wall with the radiator on? Like you said it looks good to the customer. Keep up the good with these educational videos
Plastering is an art and worth every penny, nearly everyone can plaster but not everyone can do it properly, i’ve known plaster come off when a door is slammed 😂
Plastering is a bad habit once you've mastered it you can do it in your sleep .......you certainly don't have to go to college to learn this .....oh and very rarely any drawings to have to read ........I started out as a joiner then went plastering with a plastering mate of mine ......joinery is far more difficult on the brain than spreading .......... Not knocking just saying
@@plipertyplap4899 I'm thinking of getting into the game. But more and more places look for qualified plasterers. Are you saying it's better to start off by working with a plasterer(like a helper, apprentice type thing) instead of say, doing your NVQ 3 in plaster training?
@@alwayslearning7672 I started as a joiner I always played about with a plastering trowel but it was only when I went working with a plasterer that my work reached the required standard and I got fast enough to get some meteridge on ... plastering is hard dirty work I developed skin problems because of it had both knees replaced and an elbow opp .... BUT all I can say to you is give it a go try to get with a reputable plasterer that will teach you ......trust me after a short time you will know wether or not you want to do it day in day out yearly.........there is nothing glamorous about being a plasterer but you will earn money 🤑 ......good luck
Having been plastering for 40 years or more, about 20 of those years with my dad , who taught me , it's a pleasure to see someone with pride in his work and doing thins logically. It's true - some plasterers do make a hell of a mess. In fact this chap is the cleanest plasterer I've ever seen (I've not seen that many - I usually do my own (slowly and badly - plastering well is hard!))
what the fuck man. i'm plastering a wall right now and i've used 8 hours to get halfway on the first coat. i thought the tools you used was for a different type of construction. this stuff is alien here in Norway. I will get these tools and do it the right way going forward. thank you! and for this job i would happily pay 1000 pounds easy

I don't mean to brag. But I think I'm the best Plasterer in the world. This one time I forgot my trowel so I ended up doing the whole building, (a 15 bedroom mansion in the country) with a butter knife. It took me 3 hours to do the whole mansion. The finish was pristine. Like glass it was . The customer was so pleased with the job he gave me an extra £10k.

I noticed when you turned up and started saying about flexi trowels, all the others who post plastering vids changed their tune, lol, you are the most real of all of them, i have picked up a few things from you, nobody knows it all ! Keep up the good work.
Use SBR if you want ripples and lumps in your finished skim where it’s not gripped, I’m not a fan of it personally, £600 for an afternoons work I don’t know any spreads round my way who are getting those prices.
Was thinking exactly the same thing £600 wow only used three bags of board finish there is no way in a million years I would like to see inside that envelope
@@Smellytunerbox Only ways he gets a price like that the clients been let down and they have no choice but to accept his price, they’re stupid and can’t count or they are generally used to having their pants pulled down when they pay for work.
Round my way at the moment there’s a real shortage of work even sites have cut back on building houses and privately there isn’t a lot and what there is everyone’s chasing it and under cutting.
There are too many bullshitters out there and not enough guys telling the truth.
@user-tw9is4it8e click the link in the description, I'll show you how to earn alot more than that every day mate 😀👍
@@Onthetrowel on them type of rates you must be close to being a millionaire 😂😂😂
@@Smellytunerboxhe did have a 35 k tax bill last year I think 😢
Never mix up until pva/spr fully.set your walls will be wavy when painted .. I do like this guy only trying help others..,
Stumbled on your channel by chance. Our family trade is stucco and plaster, its great to see your work
I love how you consider the next tradesman's job and make sure you don't make it hard for them. Nobody seems to do that nowadays, they are just in and out as fast as possible doing the bare minimum they can get away with.
Great to see a professional looking after other trades like me painter
Great video tanx for the upload,if ever you decide to come of the tools you could open up a plastering school, you have a great in depth way of explaining things👍👌
Love the videos! Especially the extra bits you do for the following tradesman.. as a decorator a lot of the time I see things left for the decorator to do. So nice touch on that. Keep up the good videos 👊
Best plastering channel by far mate be great to see some floating vids and tips keep up the good work 👏
As my job was a tiler for many years, not all plasters care about the tiler coming in after them.
Mate it's a massive issue for tilers for sure.
I use lime to set the bond off quicker always keep a small amount in an old 10L paint bucket with lid on or 20min easy fill for the finish plaster 😁👊
Fair play cracking job fair price and extremely considerate of other trades not many around like this .
This is great, some real life advice. Man, you make it look so easy!
I stumbled across this & im not into diy or anything but I well enjoyed that. Therapeutic guy!
im a sparky who does a little bit of plastering, mainly I started out doing it to learn how to fix my own fuckups but its really quite handy to know. I've found its hard to find a good plasterer or good tiler here in Australia, but fuck doing tiling I'll leave that for the tilers
you sir are the G.O.A.T of plastering👌
Thats it im done with Decorating im going for plastering, i dont get 600 for a weeks work
Maybe you should concentrate on becoming a better P&D, if you don't earn that in a week?
Great job Kirk. Your video quality is on the next level!
I'm trying to get better mate
Fair play getting off the tools 👍🏼 work smart not hard
O my what a price nice, was quoted £600 a wall, 4 walls to a room, all ready and prepped just waiting plaster.
Nice one good man 💪👍🦾
Worth every penny … brilliant plasterer!
I thought the idea was to hide them so we need to get the metal detector out
Doesn't matter if it takes 1hr it is the master skills that are value for money.
Never plaster over PVA etc if it is still wet, it needs to be tacky.
Any decent sparkie will use the correct back boxes and joining lugs so you dont have to worry about the space between the boxes.
This is the world we live in my mate
I've been a sparks for 25 years, I was trained to always think of the next man...etc etc...
Dont forget the floor layers that have to scrape yer plaster off the floor b4 fitting 😂.Nice job pal.
Ever thought of using a speed skim to flatten out first 👍
Great to see a real Pro at work
Good professional work ethic my son AND nice ‘quiet’ hands on the trowel for a big guy 👏💪👍 If the customer doesn’t like the price for quality work - then let the ‘rough’ squad in!!
Thanks for the nice comment mate
Its one hell of a skill i take my hat off to them....not one id want to be doing past the age of 55 then again i wouldn't want to be a bricklayer past the age of 50 ...in my later years I'd want to be an electrician or plumber fixing leaking taps and toilets 😅 for an easy life
This mans not a plasterer, hes an artist.just class
Your words have truth at heart
To plaster is an art
His work is art, his art is an
Artwork of an artisan
Theres an art to this, i wouldnt even try to do this myself, leave it to the experts
You seem like a very nice person to work with. And thinking of other trades after you, well done sir
I appreciate that!
@@plipertyplap4899
I'm thinking of getting into the game.
@@alwayslearning7672 NVQ MEANS NOT VERY QUICK OR NOT VERY QUALIFIED 😉
Always a pleasure watching your work! Worth every penny for that graft. 👍🏽💪🏽
I am a DIYer but use lime plaster due to age of house... with a 2 week set time, its a different world.
Well done mate 👏 👍 excellent work
Having been plastering for 40 years or more, about 20 of those years with my dad , who taught me , it's a pleasure to see someone with pride in his work and doing thins logically. Also, while you are clearly fast enough it's great to see a job without a bloody mess everywhere. No point slapping it on like a loon when there's more on the floor.
Spot on, cheers Al 🙏
It's true - some plasterers do make a hell of a mess. In fact this chap is the cleanest plasterer I've ever seen (I've not seen that many - I usually do my own (slowly and badly - plastering well is hard!))
Brilliant channel. Great watch. You are a credit to your trade. 😊
Bang some hydrated lime in the bonding, goes off in 5 minutes literally!
what the fuck man. i'm plastering a wall right now and i've used 8 hours to get halfway on the first coat. i thought the tools you used was for a different type of construction. this stuff is alien here in Norway. I will get these tools and do it the right way going forward. thank you! and for this job i would happily pay 1000 pounds easy
I been sparking for 45 yeas never seen a spread clean my boxes they used to cut all the wires short and skim over woopies for metal dectors in the 80s from argos 😂😂
Kirk earn as much as you can while you can,
Give them a price they except, then pay when the job is done there’s no problem getting payed when you turn out descent work like Kirk!
NGL I once may £40 trillion in 2 seconds on a job, which was several multiples of planetary wealth and production, but I gave it back so as not to destroy mankind. That's what makes me the world's greatest philanthropist.
Or the greatest 🐮💩er
Another very informative great vid. Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge.
Chuck some cement in the water before you add the bonding and don’t mix it to thick, takes a bit of practice but goes off quick and doesn’t shrink and we pva the Chanel’s .Why didn’t you pva the walls instead of sbr?
Wow it’s nice to hear that think about the chiippys coming behind you. I do the same and think about the decorators coming next. If only everyone could think like this!
