    The 1st plane is an KC-135 (Boeing 707) from Grissom ARB, Indiana. I live very close to Grissom and it's not uncommon for them to overfly my town at a few thousand feet just to rattle the dishes a little! It's hard to believe these aircraft are 50 years old...

    My dad was a navigator on the KC's for about 19 years. Got to travel the world except visit Russia. It was during the 80's.

    How beautiful. My father was a pilot on one and it crashed. Killing all. But seeing this makes me feel close to him again

      Well first I want to say that I am sorry for your loss. I know what it is like to lose a parent. I lost both of my parents.
      Secondly, I rode in a KC-10 coming from Portugal heading back to the USA, back in 1991. It was my first time on one.

    I received permission to go to the C-141 cockpit coming back from REFORGER '79. It was awesome, the Flight Computer was the size of a refrigerator! :-) I still remember looking down on the Blue ocean at dawn with the sharp white reflections of the Icebergs floating majestically...

    a340 has a newer version of the cfm-56 and is a much larger aircraft than the kc-135...so by perspective they look smaller....accessory pack aka hydraulic pumps, generator, etc are on the bottom of the engine on the 135...where as other versions they're off to the side like on the 737, which explains their flat bottom on the cowling vs the rounded off cowling on the 135

    Is that a McGuire KC-10? I worked with them along with the now retired 141 and C-17. After a long night shift, I always contemplated taking a nap in the hanging bunks behind the passenger seats haha.

    Great to see this, thaks for posting! Was really interested to see no Kreuger flaps, and only one leading edge slat open on each wing on the KC 135. I've never seen that before. I wonder if they're discretionary to wind/ atmospherics/altitude conditions. Once again, Thanks!

    I could ask the same how the engines of the Vickers VC10 and the Ilyushin Il-62 kept being on the tail and didn't fall off.

    There are about a dozen KC135's modified to receive gas inflight, but the majority of the fleet cannot take on gas like the KC-10 can , hope this helps

    They're the same engines (near enough), aren't they, on the Kc-135R as on the A340-300. So why are the cowlings so much bigger on these?

    the DC10, or now, the MD 11, always amazed me on how the 3rd engine was so f****n huge, and didnt crush the tail, defies physics.........

    Why are the engines on the KC-135 so big? Isn't the aircraft based on the 707?

    • @trainfreak7745
      @trainfreak7745 10 років тому

      It is the 707 but the US Air Force has since replaced the original engines..

    • @Player9090
      @Player9090 10 років тому

      ***** Yep. Original 707 turbojet engines are not nearly as efficient as modern turbofan engines.

    kc-135 is not the same airframe as a 707...closely related, but it's actually a 717 designation....shorter wingspan, lacks full set of leading edge flaps, etc
