I've witnessed B1s take off multiple times. I must say that they are the loudest planes I've ever heard. I've also been about 100 yards or so from the runway when a Concorde took off. It was ridiculously loud as well, but I think the B1 has it beat .

Years ago I was driving up US 183, turned east on 71 at the north end of Bergstrom AFB at night. This jet noise started, so loud, and just kept getting louder and louder. As I was driving it became almost disorienting, how loud it was. Well, we'd had a B1 at an airshow there at Bergstrom, I guess it was leaving. I looked out the driver's side window and there was the glow of those engines. It had flown right over me.
      It was REALLY LOUD.
I've worked at the airports in Austin and Indy my entire adult life, I'm 57 years old and I know what loud is. That B1 was roaring.

I'm an old B-52 crew dog (the "Dirty D") who will always have a soft spot in my heart for the Buff, but I can't help but think the B-1 is one sexy, deadly-looking beast. She's definitely "Bad to the Bone".

My shop is a half of a block from Nellis AFB and every time a B1 takes off it sets off car alarms in the parking lot!
I love watching the B1 take off a little after sunset, the afterburner shock rings look to be about 30 ft long!
My favorite plane to watch take off, tickles your inner ear from the vibration, quite a sight!

Hit pause just as the second bone starts his takeoff roll. Did anyone notice the F-22 Raptor sitting on the ramp behind it, next to a couple of ancient A-6E's? Very cool.

I grew up in Abilene TX. When these planes were new and just being allowed to be viewed by the public they would run low altitude maneuvers out over buffalo gap mountains. We would climb up and watch them bank damn near sideways and throttle up to an almost a vertical climb. Incredible piece of equipment. I miss living near a military air base. You really get to see some cool things.

This video was taken at Nellis AFB. I used to work at a power plant about 10 to 15 miles from the base and when the B-1s would take off I had to discontinue phone conversations in my office because these airplanes were so loud. It was so cool to see all the aircraft during Redflag exercises.

I used to work at Tinker AFB in Oklahoma and once happened to drive past the main runway just as a B-1 was readying for takeoff. The noise was deafening and I thought the driver side window might explode because it was shaking so violently. This video makes the sound of a B-1 resemble a purring kitten, when it's really more like a lion roaring its head off. Car alarms often go off whenever this beast takes flight.

You're quite right. The area-ruled fuselage and blended wing are very B-58. The XB-70 should have seen service just because it was totally awesome. They had to repaint the prototypes every time they did a Mach 3 run because the air friction from going that fast literally burned the primer off the hull.

It's an excersise run by the USAF that involves many different battle scenarios and aircraft. The idea is to prepare aircrews for war by constantly training them in various missions and everything from fighter and bomber tactics to weapons deployment, evasive manouvers,self-defense,you name it....and the neat thing is all types of aircraft participate at once...very intense and precise kind of flying. And yes, they are tested and graded on their performance.Very cool indeed.

Each has it's role. Stealth fighters, cruise missiles and B-2s knock out key air defense control sites. B-1s can get in supersonic and hit more air defense or command and control sites. Once we have air dominance the fairly slow B-52s can get in and do their workhorse job.

I remember back in the late 1970s or early 80s, I can't recall exactly, when the construction of B-1s were postponed due to the cost. I believe it was Senator Kennedy who later eventually egged the house into having them built....I was in the Marine Corps during that time and when at air bases I also remember the jello tradition with air crews where they would bring aboard freshly made jello and at high cold altitudes the jello would cure and they would eat it.
