      I've been following a medically supervised keto diet for the past 90 days. I feel great. The weight loss is slow, but feeling so much better and not being a slave sugar cravings is wonderful. I wouldn't believe it if I didn't experience it myself. I know people who are taking ozempic and losing more weight. But I can see the difference in how we feel. I have energy, and they don't. I'm eating healthy foods and they are still eating whatever they want - if they eat at all. Keto for me, has been the first time that I've been able to give up sugar and refined carbs.

      Docs know that very few patients will actually follow nutrition advice, because denying yourself junk food is hard. Docs work for organizations who want them to see more patients and to "cure" them.

      @@ericsmith3916 You are right. Read The Flexner Report. Docs are mostly sales people. Most should be in prison. They profit over our illness that they steer us towards. The money the system makes is ungodly. They are sell outs.

    I test my Vit d levels twice a year and take enough daily to keep my levels up around the 200nmol. As you get older it’s harder to make Vit d just from the sun. I didn’t supplement much at all this past summer and my Vit d levels were the lowest I have recorded 138nmol from memory. I use a calculator to determine what I need to bring it back up. 68 years young. No meds no bad cold or flu ever nor taken an antibiotic in over 30 years. I will keep doing what I’m doing. Love my Vit d

      200 nmol/l = 80 ng/ml. Ng/ml is what most labs in U.S. use for measuring Vitamin D levels. Nmol/l ÷ 2.496 = ng/ml.

      Saturated fat is essential for conversion. Remember, it is not a vitamin but a pro (and pre) hormone. So, a bit of sun and generous daily amounts of animal fat are key for producing D.

      Supplements help but are not great. I hope you are also taking K2. If not, you are doing harm.

      @@sharonlasper8999 divide by 2.5 (2.496) as mentioned by BringItOn31124 and you get the ng/ml. In your case: ~ 53 ng/ml

    I've been watching these nutrition/metabolism videos for over three years and this is the first time I've heard an expert definitively declare that sugar gets caught in the fiber lattice net and "chewed up" by intestinal bacteria to feed the gut. Thank you for openly airing this key point. @38:20

    I've long believed you need to see the sun as well as being outside to absorb vitamin D. My doctor thought I was taking pills because my levels were high, top 95% in Australia. I have an office job but make a point of getting my daily dose at the weekend, i.e. being out in the sun long enough but not to burn. Sleep like a log, approx 7.5 hours and I feel terrific. (Keto diet since 2018 and no dairy 2 years and 2 months and counting) oh... I had to tell my Doc Keto means no alcohol! More recently, about 4 weeks I have gone to eating once a day thereby absolutely limiting the amount of food that I can eat. No longer eat flour products. As another doc said, "if it's got a barcode on it put it back". Melbourne Au.

      Why does keto mean no alcohol?
      Small doses of wine or no-sugar mixed drinks don't seem to affect ketosis in my case.....

      See I think keto works because people consume real saturated fat in real food with k2. I am not keto. I do eat complex carbs.

      D is not absorbed. It is the process of conversion via minimal sun exposure and generous amounts of saturated animal fat. D is not a vitamin; it is a pro-hormone.

      @@MegaWandak I was measuring them, anything from 0.9, 1 point something and then 4. something if I was running but really this month (April '24) I have cut out every bit of carb from my diet and I only eat once a day. If I fall off the waggon in the evening and eat carbs the next day my head/brain tells me as it's not as clear. cloudy you could say.

    I eat a lot of cheese, yogurt, and take vitamin supplement. Last check in January? My vitamin D level was 106. Fortunately, my blood calcium levels finally reached low normal, after years of being low. I attribute the increase in blood calcium levels to changing to a ketovore diet.

    I have the book Determined by Robert Sopolsky❤ I have an appointment at Sanford with a Parkinson’s disease doctor in July too. I have lost over 100 lbs since my diagnosis and have my energy but 6 pills of Sinemet is needed to function. I believe it’s sugar. The more I try to change the worse it gets. To stay healthy I try to incorporate good stuff in my diet also. Bloodwork is good Vitamin deficiencies I have to monitor.

    Interesting point about 24-D clearance, BUT what Dr. Lustig doesn’t mention is that cholecalciferol is also a co-factor for gut microbiota and this may be a reason to continue supplementation even if you can’t absorb the D directly. Levels can rise abruptly after years of consistent supplementation that had not previously seemed to move the blood level.

    I'm very curious why Dr. Lustig didn't touch on how people with thyroid disease can have difficulty raising their Vitamin D level?

      Polysorbate is the only one Lustig mentioned which is artificial. Just search food additive number to find out if not named. Lecithin however is completely natural and even produced in bile, why be scared of soy or sunflower lecithin even though our own body produces it. Please don't become orthorexic.

    I thoroughly appreciate hearing Dr.Lustig dispense his knowledge, wisdom, insight and even some of his opinions. But the notion that we need medical supervision to live keto? What?

      I think he has a point there because some of us just think we’re doing keto but in fact we’re doing it wrong. I take myself as an example. I thought I was doing keto right since everyone around me keeps saying that I shouldn’t be eating the keto way which is without the carbs, but I was still eating with the black pepper sauce and chilli sauce and stuff. It’s no wonder all my problems keep coming back. Now knowing that it actually can do me more harm than good, I must really understand the recipe if I want to do a proper keto

      No matter what you do, it's unlikely that anyone will do worse than the standard American diet loaded with seed oils, sugar and additives.

    Hi Dr. Lustig, I truly appreciate your knowledge and expertise. I read your book and continue listening to your podcasts. I am an ObGyn from NY. I had a question regarding leaky gut. Do you think it is possible to be born with leaky gut? I have seen newborns having severe allergies to breast milk. I have Sean it more than once. Do you think it has to do with possibly mother having leaky gut and also giving the baby her poor microbiome? Do you know if it ever was looked at?

    i do believe that our metabolism is either sugar or fat dependent upon the amount of carbohydrates consumed.
    i prefer the carnivore diet and that has a very healthy bunch of adherents.
    interesting point is that they consume no dietary fiber.

      One study found that people have fewer gut problems to the degree they lessen fiber. The gut microbes will also feed on such things as collagen.

    How about the production of yoghurt at home, using presumably irradiated milk n some yoghurt to provide the lactobacilli needed for fermentation. Wouldn’t the resultant yoghurt be rich in vitamin D Like the milk it originated from?!
    As for sun exposure for VitD production it is important to mention that presence of a glass shield or clothes will curb absorption of VitD

      Yogurt manufacturers aren't required to use fortified milk to make yogurt, so vitamin D doesn't always get added to the process. For example, the Vitamin D3 content of yogurt fortified with water-dispersible form can decrease significantly after one to three weeks of storage, while the Vitamin D3 content of samples fortified with the oil-dispersible form can decrease after two to three weeks. However, yogurt made from plant-based milks can now contain up to 220 IU of added D per 8 ounces.
      Plain yogurt and cheese typically contain small amounts of vitamin D, averaging around 3-4% of the recommended daily intake per serving. This is because vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin and is naturally present in the fatty components of these dairy products. Yogurt is also often fortified with vitamin D to help people reach their daily recommendation. A 6-ounce container typically has 20 percent of your daily needs.

      I’ve been on an animal-based low-carb diet since October 2023. I do consume whole, full-fat raw dairy. But just out of curiosity, on days when I had few or no carbs except those from milk/kefir, I tried to use those little sticks to test for ketones. Tan. No pink at all.
      How many days straight of strict carnivore would it require to produce ketones?

    Dr Lustig , what if you are doing carnivore type diet but also adding in small amounts of carbs while utilizing OMAD , could or would this help with keeping down small particle LDL while still having carbs?

      OMAD has nothing to do with it. Learn about the Randle Cycle. See BART KAY video dangers of sugars and fats. NO- carbs are very bad and you do not want to mix with fats.

      ​@@TheAnimalBasedCure He will not answer you. Bart Kay would agree with you that a single Bolus (as he says) of meat is best. I tried it and found that I need at least 2MAD. I tried IF and failed- dropped 10 lbs. and cannot for the life of me regain it. I am too thin now- BMI 20. I run and workout but want that 10lbs. back. My Tri's are 48 but I think it is too low. I might have slight malnutrition because I lost my gallbladder years ago. I don't absorb fats (Fat sol. vits. as well.) This is despite being mostly Carnivore. I eat very clean, healthy Keto and I work out.
      Importantly, my key cholesterol RATIO's are great. Non-HDL is slightly high 137 vs. 130 is in range. RATIOS is what Dr. L. stresses in his book- and the fact that he hates statins. What is very important are the RATIOs of TriG to HDL and also Total Cholesterol to HDL. Google about the ratio's. That is where it's at. How are all your other numbers? You just divide them. We very much need Cholesterol. TC should be around 120. Docs will flag it as high- it is not.
      IMHO, it is the inflammation that causes potential issues. Not cholesterol. The real problem and thing to measure is atherosclerotic plaque. That is why above all, most over 50 Y/O should do a Calcium Score test.
      How do I explain- simple. Genes. Your very smart, evolved genes know exactly what to do with dietary cholesterol- if you let them. If you keep your body fit, healthy and not inflamed. The body wants and needs to thrive if we get out of it's way. Also, learn about THE RANDLE CYCLE Dangers of mixing Carbs and Fats with Bart Kay. It's an amazing video. You will learn a lot.
      You seem knowledgeable. Do you believe in doing a Colonoscopy? If so, why? I don't. Most disagree but I have good reasons. Remember, the All Cause Mortality remains about the same whether or not you do that invasive procedure. These things make docs. money but have cost healthy people their lives when they puncture the bowel. Also, it takes that cancer ~10 years to grow anyway and most polyps are not cancerous. There are 1,000 other cancers that they never warn you about. They never tell you how to eat well, what toxins to avoid in everyday life. All cancer causing. No thanks to their test.       Eat natto daily. Japanese gave Bern eating it for 400 years. It is fermented soybeans, dissolves microclots in the blood, acc to research. Big Pharma already made one key ingredient in natto into medicine called nattokinase and some American doctors are using it to treat long covid. Recent publications show that the bacteria in natto called subtilis bacillus natto kills or reduce SARS-COV-2 virus when they are put on a petri dish.

    What about the potential for altering the natural feedback loops by taking exogenous vitamin D3?
    >> CYP24A1 gene for 24-hydroxylase enzyme produces calcitroate.
    And, by the way, there was a great vitamin D researcher who coined the term 'soltriol' for the active vitamin D compound in the body. Cholecalciferol for D3 and Calcifediol for for the 25-OH form are rather clunky by comparison don't you think?

    Personal responsibility is without question the highest of priorities. Your choices are your responsibilities. This is America. No one makes you drive to the store, walk down the aisles, pick up the ultra high processed foods, buy them and take them home to eat. I chose to eliminate them from my life. I choose not to let the food cartels add addicting me to their profit line.

    Unfortuately, he believes meat and dairy is bad. The real Meditteranean diet is not low fat and they do eat meat and full fat dairy. Imo people need to go outside more than he thinks. People need real saturated fat in whole foods to absorb vitamin d3. D3 goes with k2. K2 is in processed meats and organ meats, which they told us not to eat.

      I haven't put it to the test since giving up seed oils, but I understand those that avoid them are much less likely to get sunburned, so don't generally need sunscreen. (Seed oils are soybean, canola, safflower, sunflower, corn, cottonseed, peanut, sesame, rice bran).

      I also avoid seed oils on a low-carb, animal-based diet. I can spend hours in the sun without burning. But it's important to build a sun callous. Getting red light with the morning sun tells the body to prepare for midday UV exposure. Look into the work of Jack Kruse, Sarah Pugh, and others.

      Ask Dr. Ken Berry, Dr. Anthony Chaffee, or Dr. Shawn baker; all carnivore doctors for a decade or more. Also, Dr Eric Westman professor from Duke Medical school rewrote the new Atkins book and recommends that way of eating for all of his patients in NC with 20 net carbs or less if you live a sedentary lifestyle.

    The Ozempic style drugs are a great tool to have but need to be very tightly controlled. Putting somebody on a medication that will pretty much lock them in for life will have very major downsides which we cannot fully understand today. It reminds me of the 1920's decision on insulin - to advise patients to eat whatever they want and treat the sugar levels with insulin resulted in uncounted negative consequences and impaired lives.

    To each their own. I don't think keto is sustainable for most people and even those who SAY they're doing it aren't once they eat some processed carbs. I do Atkins: High protein, moderate fat, low-carb. SUPER easy to sustain. I lost 45 lbs on it last year and have kept it off.

      Good point..I've been on Ketogenic lifestyle since 6/2022 and lost close to 100 lbs and reversed my insulin resistance and Metabolic syndrome. All without a doctor's supervision. The only thing I suggest is to either join a gym, lift weights, work out your muscles, like pushups, pull-ups, planks, or abdominal exercises so this way you don't lose muscle along with your weight loss..

    With great respect I disagree with the notion that we do not have free will. I go to the supermarket all the time and look at those delicious ice creams in the frozen food section and I make conscious decisions to walk away from them and go to the vegetable aisle and pick up avocado and broccoli, so what do you call that? I’m overpowering the biochemical urge at 72 years old after eating tons of sugar and loving it😂My mission now Mr Phelps that I do accept is to walk away from the biochemical urge, Thats willpower and I think its free?
    There is no way you’ll get big food to change their ways. You may get a little change from some of the corporations. but like big tobacco, you have to take them to court because profits rule. If the notion is your expecting the uneducated hedonistic population of the United States to tell big food they want something different…FAGITABOUTIT😂

    I want to know if the offspring of mice who were in ketosis during pregnancy have smarter, heavier-brained, stronger, healthier, and more resilient offspring? Has any one, is any one doing research on this? I have heard stories of human offspring of near starving, meat and fat fed pregnant women being smarter, stronger...in areas where there were at the time no sugar or flour or starch containing products... so the people were starving, and the only food was meat, fatty fish, seal mammals and fat...so they would have been in ketosis...I think.

    So as Thomas Seyfried alludes to, or evens says directly, for strict vegetarians to attain ketosis moderation may mean eating one pea every second day....Moderation safe levels of basically any substance classified as food seems to vary greatly from individual to individuals, and from time to time in the same individual. for me one orange a day no other food, puts me out of ketosis.. I hope this is temporary...I will not eat any fruit for a while....

    You can combat low grade inflamation with gluthatione and rest it's not really a necesity to eat non-stop , that's why fasting works. Robert should consider faith a bit more in his statements since some informations do not fit. -telling a healthy guy who figured out there was no virus existing on this planet but bacterial mask induced pneumonia.
    Low grade inflamation (prematurely aging) can be simply because of excess fat/overweight and glucose is circulating in the blood and damaging tissue, that happens after a while if you don't exit the metabolic syndrome effect driven by pre-diabetes, hyperinsulemia for too long.

      As a soldier in the great carnivore v. vegetarian holy war, Greger is not exactly an objective source.
      The zealots ignore the fact that there are people who have followed ketogenic diets for years and gotten their diabetes under control (including many who have not joined the carnivore camp), just as there are vegetarians who run marathons and live long lives.

      I followed Ornish for years after being diagnosed with diabetes. I didn't die, but I couldn't keep my blood glucose under control. Maybe WFPB is effective for some people, but I wasn't one of them. In fact, I wouldn't even have thought to try a ketogenic diet if the sacred WFPB diet had worked for me.
      BTW, as a bonus, my years-long digestive troubles cleared up within a few months of laying off grains.
      Dogma aside, in reality, we're not all the same.

A better statement is, there are best practices which include lifestyle that well suit specific groups of humans. Diets in dark, cold climates will and should vary from diets in very sunny, warm climates, etc.

      Assume you're eating NO carbs but have perpetually high insulin levels. Under the "insulin kills ketones" theory, you shouId not be in ketosis. Yet people in this category (myself included) still have a decent level of ketones (>1.0) That's the puzzle.
      I'm guessing maybe insulin isn't that lethal to ketones after all, but I'd like to know how the pieces fit together.
