    turns out the bit about camera rooms towards the end of the video is incorrect, when spotted on a camera it will alert the nearest guard to come check it out, I think when filming all nearby guards were in their alerted state so they didn't come to me right away, so I mistook it for them not being alerted by the camera

    • @BluntsNBeatz
      @BluntsNBeatz 10 місяців тому +28

      Actually it's not wrong. Maybe it varies per map, but if all guards nearby all the camera terminals are taken out, the cameras will literally stop even showing enforcer dots above them. They can still record you and require erasing the evidence, but even committing a crime in front of them doesn't ruin the rating permanently. I've been meaning to test whether it's specific guard NPCs hardcoded as the "camera watchers" or just anyone who happens to be in proximity to the camera terminals that affects this.

      I think it also depends on the outfit. I was playing the Landslide mission in Sapienza last night and went up and down the town hall tower in some different outfits and the camera only reacted if I was in outfit that didn't have access there. But there is no guard at the town hall monitors in that mission but no one came running to attack me.

      I can confirm what @BluntsNBeatz said, I just tested it in Sapienza. Make sure you take out ALL the guards, which in Sapienza there are three (one in mansion, one in tower and one in biolab). Most people do not need to know this, because if you're going to take out the guard at the camera room you may as well just disable the camera's while you're at it, however it is in the game.

      Yeah! I think that people also let the SA board refrain them from doing any wacky or cool challenges that they can make for themselves. The board is for the people who are competitive-that want the speed and the purist feel of Hitman. The checklist challenges, to me, are there get a feel of how to manipulate your targets or NPCs in the level’s design and to unlock stuff instead of it being objectives you complete to win.
      I’m more of a SA stickler kind of gal, so one my favorite things to do in Contracts Mode is to figure out how to get SA on a contract even though it’s obviously meant to be a messy hit and run or meant to use the more “game-breaking” tools like the Sieker-1.

      It would be a complete waste to only play levels once. Some of the levels are amazing, but the missions can be terrible. I think the lab in Sapienza makes the mission worse, and China is fantastic, but the mission is silly.

      Actually you can, with the following rules:
      1) If you are taking an outfit from an NPC's body, you can be instantly spotted.
      2) Otherwise, you can take any disguise freely so long as you maintain a certain distance from the closest NPC. The suspicion meter on any NPCs nearby will show and increase but unless they're really close it will not fill up before you finish.
      3) If the disguise you are in or taking isn't allowed in the current area, or an NPC nearby enforces that disguise, this may obviously be more problematic as the suspicion will increase faster.

    Correction, actually. Ghosts (or crowds, as they're officially dubbed) can actually report crimes. If a real NPC at the tail end of a crowd saw a suspicous action, the crowd would transmit the awareness like a synapse to any other unaware NPC in the vicinity. This is most easily demonstrated with NPC viewcones off, by dragging someone's body where a crowd can fully see it. Any npc in or around a crowd will instantly become aware of a you dragging the body.

    • @Unfazed1888
      @Unfazed1888 7 місяців тому +13

      Another correction: If you’re trespassing or hunted, the cameras will alert a guard to you. Not having guards be in the security room makes no difference.

    I also love how NPCs arent just there to exist for the player's convenience. They also have actual personal lives and emotions. The player will first give a quick chuckle when hearing it for the first time, the next times they still chuckle a bit, but less. And at last the player remembers all the NPC lines and sometimes says it with them, to show that the player is familiar with the environment. Best example of this is the Bangkok chef who screams "ITS ONLY NUMBERS!" when confronted with the fact that he has to bring a birthday topper to Cross' birthday. The emotion in it is very easy to notice, and he is actually annoyed instead of talking in lower pitch and higher tone.

  • @comfylung
    @comfylung 8 місяців тому +12

    Great video! I think something a lot of people miss from a thematic perspective is that since Hitman deals with a fairly morbid subject, the NPC design is critical in ensuring there's a consistent sense of levity throughout missions. Their ambient barks and conversations, as well as their reactions to 47, are I think critical to the humor of the game.
    There's a meta aspect to this too: someone might hear an NPC report to a guard that 47 is doing something suspicious, but the bark is really generic, like "There's this guy, doing stuff that they shouldn't!" On first blush it seems like a mechanical limitation-that the NPC doesn't have dialogue for specific interactions. But I think it's intentionally vague. They could easily add reaction dialogue for things like suspiciousness/trespassing; they do it under some conditions when they see a body or a murder. But it's funnier if the NPC sounds like they have no clue what's going on.
    Some of this is _really_ subtle. One of the barks for women sending another NPC to investigate a distraction is something like "Could you go see what that prop toss was?" "Prop toss" is effectively a stage direction, referring to an object as a "prop" as a technical term in film/theatre. The unexpected fourth-wall breaking is funny. And I think these sorts of dialogue are critical to maintaining a humorous atmosphere in a game that is otherwise about purposeful, deliberate murder.

    I know you seem to only do Hitman stuff, but I think the Sniper Elite series also has fairly interesting AI. It's basically like they're all guards, but much more in depth with how they work. They can get stressed, if wounded they will limp to cover and find medical supplies, they will help out their buddies, and (though I'm not sure if this is just by chance or an actual coded plan) they will systematically try to encircle the player, intentionally waiting by exits for the area to block off escapes from combat, and will work together to suppress, flank, and grenade the player (or their last known location).

  • @QemeH
    @QemeH 7 місяців тому +6

    Honestly, the only tidbit of information you need to know about Hitman NPC to understand their depth and genius design is the story of the car bomb in my favourite map, Miami:
    There is an NPC in an interrogation room at a security post who tells the guards interrogating him that he was payed by Robert Knox to put a car bomb on the race car of one of Sierra Knox's rivals. One room over there is an evidence locker where you find said car bomb. You can then disguise yourself as a pit crew member of Sierra's team (which you can learn by overhearing that they are short a mechanic and the team leader is frantically calling for a replacement) and place the car bomb on her car. Even better: If you then disguise yourself with the same outfit the dude in the interrogation room has (race marshall), you can give the remote detonator to Robert Knox (telling him the bomb is in the competitors car) and have him explode his own daughter.
    NONE of this is part of a mission story, the achievment you get if you manage to do it has no description and Diana doesn't even hint at this possibility. The entire unique solution to the puzzle that every Hitman map is comes just from the interaction of NPCs without the input of the player (other than being near, to save your PC the unneccessary workload). It is endlessly rewarding to put these pieces of information together yourself, just because you thought "hm, that dude accused of bombing somebody was hired by Knox... I wonder if I could..."
    And every map has DOZENS of these tiny little stories. Some don't even involve the targets - like e.g. the guard and the maid who are constantly flirting in the upper level of Dartmoor or the two patients who gossip about the fact that the bandaged patient in Hokkaido is Jason Portman, etc.

    More than 200 hours on this game and I hadn't realise that getting caught on cameras depends of the presence of guards in the security room...

    To be fair, the game is pretty much built around 2 things: Environments, and (obviously) NPCs. A captivating environment is necessary for any good stealth game, because it has to balance the actual stealth aspect of the game, as well as looking good and fitting into the lore, to appeal to any fans. The NPCs are the only aspect that can really change the outcome of a play-through of a level, if someone spots you dragging a body, they’ll alert someone. If NPCs didn’t exist to cause the player some troubles, the game would be boring, just running up to the target and their bodyguards and shooting everyone. IOI managed to create a perfect balance between guiding the player to complete the level in the many ways it was intended to be beat, slightly more difficult for newer players, and just letting the player have fun (as Cheru has proven 😂). Generally just a stunning game.

    I usually call ghosts , crowds or dumbPC's also ghosts have one Hitpoint , and do you know that if there is a physical exit near the ghosts they can run and never come back? , in Paris if you set off any explotions the ghosts will run away to the exit , it's pretty cool

    i like this video, but i do feel like you didn't touch on the most important part of hitman NPCs (enough), which is the dialogue. sure, they can provide useful mission intel or even stories, but sometimes, they are just going about their day, mindlessly chatting, and *that's* what makes them feel so alive! even if there aren't subtitles to the dialogue, it's always so fun to hear it - like the two guys chatting in the special mission with the actor in sapienza, one of them whining about how they should've cast dave bateson, while the other argues that he has nothing to do with the franchise. the two lovebirds from dartmoor are also adorable, and all the lines people say while passing by 47?! that man is a chick AND dude magnet and it's hilarious!

    i know i'm 7 months late but npc is typically "non-player character" not "non-playable character" (unless for some reason hitman/ioi has its own specific definition that i was unaware of). iirc it comes from tabletop games where players have their character that they play as (PC/player character) and the gamemaster/dungeonmaster has characters they play as (non-player characters).

    Sorry, but the point about cameras is completely wrong. It doesn’t matter if a guard is in the security room or not, if a camera spots you trespassing or doing something illegal, it will alert a nearby guard to come over to where you are and arrest you. You can not “get spotted on camera as much as you like” if a guard isn’t in the security room, that’s just blatantly incorrect.
